 Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor WEST COVINA - Illegal and dangerous fireworks were found near a quarter-acre brush fire that was extinguished in 20 minutes July 4, according to the West Covina Fire Department.
Firefighters spotted the flames at 10:33 p.m. while helping to close down the city’s July 4 event at the West Covina Sportsplex. The fire burned in the undeveloped parcels of land between two drainage ditches near Fairgrove Avenue and Aroma Drive, according to the West Covina Fire Department. Police were called prior to the brush fire for separate reports of illegal fireworks being set off and for trespassers on the property where the fire occurred, according to the West Covina Fire Department. incidentally, West Covina firefighters were conducting drills in the same area Friday, June 30. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor WEST COVINA - The cause of a small brush fire that forced at least one game to stop near a baseball and softball sports complex Saturday.
Callers reported the fire near Big League Dreams Sports Park, 2100 S. Azusa Ave., around 3:25 p.m. February 15. The fire was extinguished relatively quickly, according to Lt. Keith Shishido of the West Covina Police Department. No one was injured. The fire burned behind Tiger Stadium at the complex. Shishido did not know the origin of the fire or if it could have been intentionally set. It [Arson] is a possibility and they are looking it, but as of right now it’s not confirmed,” Shishido told SGV CityWatch. The fire interrupted at least one game. Video shared through social media showed softball players standing idle at the sports complex as West Covina Fire trucks positioned themselves to protect lives and property as thick black smoke rose in the distance. No damage to any structure was reported. |
