First responders were sent to the crash at Valinda Avenue and Glendora Avenue just after Midnight April 23. Once first responders descended into the flood control channel, they found a passenger dead at the scene. Driver Jose Felix Tamayo-Juárez, 24, was evaluated for minor injuries and later arrested. He is being held in lieu of $100,000 bail, according to the West Covina Police Department. Roadways near the crash were closed for many hours but have since reopened. All vehicles will be checked, traffic volume permitting. Noe L. Manzanarez was driving a 2022 Toyota Camry eastbound on the 210 freeway west of Azusa Avenue around 12:02 a.m. April 27 in the No. 1 lane. He crashed into the rear of a 2019 Nissan Sentra that was stopped due to heavy traffic, according to the California Highway Patrol. The still-unidentified female driver of the Nissan Sentra died at the scene. A 2007 Ford F-350 was hit on the left side by one of the vehicles in the first collision. The F-350’s driver, a Rancho Cucamonga man, was uninjured, according to the California Highway Patrol. Alcohol is a suspected factor in the crash. All lanes, except lane No. 5, were closed for nearly several hours during the investigation. All lanes were reopened at 3:15 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol. Manzanarez received minor injuries. He is being held in lieu of $100,000 bail at the Inmate Reception Center in Los Angeles ahead of a scheduled appearance in the Pomona Courthouse April 29. The teen driver was found hours after the collision occurred. Officers were able to determine the identity of the suspect, found him later during a traffic stop and took him into custody, according to Sgt. Eric Street of the West Covina Police Department. Police were called to the scene at 7:36 p.m. August 29. The juvenile girl died at the scene. The teen driver was suspected of DUI, but Street did not know if the teen was under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The juvenile girl was struck on Azusa Avenue at Fairgrove. The teen driver fled the scene after the crash, Street told SGV CityWatch. The teen driver is still in police custody, and was booked on suspicion of DUI resulting in bodily injury, gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and hit and run resulting in death. The checkpoint will be held in an area statistically more prone to collisions and DUI arrests. It will be held from 6 p.m. Friday to 2 a.m. Saturday August 29, according to the West Covina Police Department. In addition to the checkpoint, additional officers will patrol West Covina streets for the remainder of August and through September. “While less people are traveling, impaired driving continues to be a problem. During the 4th of July holiday, the CHP made 738 arrests for DUI over a 54-hour period,” the West Covina Police Department said in a written statement. “Driving while impaired is illegal, whether it is alcohol, prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications or marijuana. If you plan on drinking or taking medications with a “may cause drowsiness” or other driving warning label, plan on staying home.”

WEST COVINA - Police are planning a DUI/driver license checkpoint for this Friday, August 17. The checkpoint is part of a national end-of-summer campaign, which will run through Labor Day weekend, considered by law enforcement as one of the deadliest times of the year in terms of DUI-related deaths, according to the West Covina Police Department. The checkpoint is scheduled to begin after 6 p.m. at an undisclosed location. A West Covina officer on patrol witnessed the collision at 1:03 a.m. and attempted to stop the driver, but he refused to yield and led officers on a pursuit, which reached high speeds and slow speeds, according to Sgt. Keith Shishido of the West Covina Police Department. One of the three drivers involved in the crash took off from the scene. The third driver who remained at the scene only complained of pain in the collision, Shishido said. The Pursuit Intervention Technique was used to disable the suspect’s vehicle in the 500 block of South Charvers Avenue. Arrested was Esteban Steven Valenciano, who was booked on suspicion of DUI, hit and run and felony evading. He is being held in lieu of $75,000 bail. |
