Firefighters spotted the flames at 10:33 p.m. while helping to close down the city’s July 4 event at the West Covina Sportsplex. The fire burned in the undeveloped parcels of land between two drainage ditches near Fairgrove Avenue and Aroma Drive, according to the West Covina Fire Department. The fire burned at Rollingwood Apartments, 1901 E. Amar Rd. The fire potentially also affected two other units, forcing at least two other residents to be displaced, authorities said. First responders were sent to the apartment complex before 1 a.m., Sunday, March 5. Some surrounding apartment units were evacuated as a precaution during the fire fight, according to Lt. Nelson of the West Covina Police Department. Los Angeles county fire department arson investigators were called to assist west Covina firefighters with determining the cause, Nelson told SGV CityWatch. The house, a detached garage and a boat parked in the driveway all suffered extensive damage in the 400 block of North Phillips Avenue, according to the West Covina Fire Department. Los Angeles County firefighters assisted West Covina with extinguishing the flames. The West Covina Fire Department Fire Investigation Unit is determining the cause. The driver died at the scene of the crash at South Nogales Street and Amanda Street. Authorities were called to the scene around 3:35 a.m., according to the West Covina Police Department. Only one vehicle was reportedly involved in the crash and the unidentified driver was the sole occupant, according to the West Covina Police Department. The West Covina Police Major Accident Investigation Team is determining how and why the crash happened. The fire was confined to one side of the home in the 1400 block of East Workman Avenue and firefighters kept the fire from extending into the home, according to the West Covina Fire Department. “The resident evacuated before Fire Department arrival and was transported to a local hospital with burn injuries,” the West Covina Fire Department said in a written statement. The resident’s dog perished in the fire, the West Covina Fire Department said. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor LOS ANGELES - Coroner officials named one of the victims who died in a large West Covina house fire. John David Cundiff, 75, was named by Lt. Rudy Molano of the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. An exam for Cundiff is still pending, according to coroner records. The woman who died in the fire has still not been publicly identified, Molano said. A fire erupted in the 700 block of North Broadmoor Avenue. Firefighters were dispatched at 1:38 a.m. April 3. Firefighters arrived within four minutes and saw flames had already broke through the roof, according to the West Covina Fire Department.
“Neighbors advised that 2 elderly residents were unaccounted for,” according to the West Covina Fire Department in a written statement. A man was pulled from the home and despite being given life-saving measures, he died at the scene. A woman was discovered in the burned down home soon after. The cause of the fire is being investigated by the West Covina Fire Department and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau. The fire burned in the 700 block of North Broadmoor Avenue around 1:30 a.m. Both victims were described as a white man and woman. Both victims were found dead at the scene, according to Deputy Eric Ortiz of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau. It was unclear if there was anyone else injured in the fire. Firefighters were in contact with arson investigators with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, according to West Covina Fire Department radio traffic. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau is investigating. Callers reported the fire near Big League Dreams Sports Park, 2100 S. Azusa Ave., around 3:25 p.m. February 15. The fire was extinguished relatively quickly, according to Lt. Keith Shishido of the West Covina Police Department. No one was injured. The fire burned behind Tiger Stadium at the complex. Shishido did not know the origin of the fire or if it could have been intentionally set. It [Arson] is a possibility and they are looking it, but as of right now it’s not confirmed,” Shishido told SGV CityWatch. The fire interrupted at least one game. Video shared through social media showed softball players standing idle at the sports complex as West Covina Fire trucks positioned themselves to protect lives and property as thick black smoke rose in the distance.
