Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor CLAREMONT – Police announced Friday the arrest of a 67-year-old Covina woman who they allege struck and killed a pedestrian January 8, leaving his body in the roadway. Evidence at the scene led officers to Helen Scheuplein and her vehicle in Pomona at the Hi-Brow bar in the 500 block of West Foothill Boulevard. She was arrested without incident and booked on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, vehicular manslaughter and hit and run causing death, according to the Claremont Police Department. Scheuplein is accused of killing 50-year-old Rancho Cucamonga man James Radzik in the 1600 block of North Towne Avenue. During Scheuplein’s arrest, officers seized evidence related to the hit and run crash, Claremont Police said.
Scheuplein is being held in lieu of 100,000 ahead of a scheduled appearance in Pomona Superior Court Monday, January 13. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor CLAREMONT - Police are searching for the driver who struck and killed a pedestrian early Wednesday.
The collision occurred in the 1600 block of North Towne Avenue near Syracuse Drive. Firefighters returning to their station discovered the body of a 50-year-old man on the roadway, according to the Claremont Police Department. The body was found just after 2:30 a.m. January 8. There is no vehicle or suspect description. A California Highway Patrol broadcast indicated the suspect vehicle should have Major front end damage and windshield damage. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor CLAREMONT - A male driver died at the scene of a solo crash after the 2015 Hyundai Azera he was driving veered into an embankment Monday morning. The Azera was west on the 210 freeway west of Baseline Road at an unknown high rate of speed when, for unknown reasons, the car veered to the right, went through a dirt embankment and landed on its roof on the concrete right shoulder, the California Highway Patrol said. The crash occurred around 1:20 a.m.
CHP officers determined the Azera was stolen, but the driver has not yet been identified. It is unknown if alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor CLAREMONT - One person died at the scene of a collision between 10 to 15 vehicles on the westbound I-10 freeway at the Indian Hill Boulevard onramp Sunday morning. Nine other people were injured, two critically, when the vehicles collided just before 2 a.m. March 24. The collisions occurred in the HOV and No. 1 lane. Passersby reported some victims were being pulled out of crashed vehicles by friends or family and were being driven away, according to California Highway Patrol traffic logs.
A Sig Alert was issued at 2:12 a.m. for all westbound lanes. The Sig Alert ended at 6:42 a.m. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor CLAREMONT - Police arrested a driver Saturday, whom they believe intentionally hit a bicyclist who later died.
Sandra Wicksted, 61, was behind the wheel of a green 1996 Mercury Tracer station wagon when she hit the bicyclist at the intersection of Radcliffe Drive and Mills Avenue at 11:35 a.m. November 3, according to the Claremont Police Department. The bicyclist was identified as 54-year-old Leslie Pray. Firefighters were dispatched to the crash scene at 11:38 a.m. The bicyclist was taken to Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center, according to Dispatch Supervisor Melanie Flores of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The bicyclist died a short time later. It was unclear if Wickstead was at the scene of the crash, or fled the area. During the course of the investigation, northbound Mills was closed at Chaparral. Southbound Mills was closed at Baseline Road. Firefighters were called back at 5:24 p.m. to assist police with washing blood off the road, Flores said. Wickstead is being held in lieu of $2 million bail. She is scheduled to appear in Pomona Superior Court November 6. Claremont investigators are searching for witnesses to Wickstead’s driving behavior prior to the crash. Witnesses cal call Claremont Police at 909-399-5411. Claremont Police became aware of the body after the California Highway Patrol transferred a 9-1-1 call around 9:48 a.m. The body was found about 100 feet over the side of the road, according to Lt. Mike Ciszek of the Claremont Police Department. The body was near the Potato Mountain Trailhead. A vehicle was parked near where the body was located, but Ciszek did not know if the vehicle was connected. It is unclear if any foul play is suspected. The body has yet to be identified. |
