EL MONTE - The pilot of a small plane landed his aircraft in the Santa Anita Wash October 10 after possibly experiencing engine trouble.
The pilot landed in the Santa Anita Wash area closest to the San Gabriel Valley Airport, 4233 N. Santa Anita Ave. around 5:07 p.m., after experiencing issues roughly five minutes prior. Air traffic control at San Gabriel Valley Airport called Los Angeles County Firefighters to the scene, but the pilot was uninjured. “Operations, just be advised we had an experimental aircraft flew down in the wash. There appears to be no injuries. The pilot had reported he is fine,” according to air traffic control radio transmissions. The plane is an experimental Tucano Replica fixed wing aircraft built and owned by Robin Langhofer. Jan’s Towing arrived to lift the aircraft to the road. Police and firefighters responded to a crash in the 2600 block of Mountain View Road around 7:30 p.m. Officers found five injured people and one male driver with a gunshot wound. He died at the scene, according to Lt. Doug Knight of the El Monte Police Department. The male driver was found bleeding from a head wound. A handgun was recovered inside the crashed vehicle. A female passenger exited the vehicle before the crash, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau. The passenger was hospitalized for injuries considered not-life threatening. The wounded driver crashed into another vehicle occupied by four people: a pregnant mother, father and two children. All were hospitalized as well. “Although the preliminary investigation reveals that the deceased male possibly suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound prior to the collision, it is being treated as a suspicious death investigation. The cause of death will be determined by the coroner’s office,” the Sheriff’s Information Bureau said. Two people were hospitalized with critical injuries and two received minor injuries, according to dispatch supervisor Michael Pittman of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. County firefighters and El Monte Police officers were called to the 2600 block of Mountain View Road, Pittman told SGV CityWatch. Although evidence suggests the male killed was driving when he was shot, investigators have yet to confirm it, according to Lt. Doug Knight of the El Monte Police Department. “We do have one confirmed gunshot victim who has been pronounced deceased,” Knight told SGV CityWatch. “He was the driver of the vehicle.” Mountain View Road and Elliott Avenue are closed in all directions as the investigation continues, Knight told SGV CityWatch. What led to the shooting is not yet known. Police received numerous calls of a collision between a vehicle and bicyclist at 6:45 a.m. Officers and Los Angeles County firefighters responded. Firefighters determined the man was dead at the scene, according to Lt. Pete Rasic of the El Monte Police Department. The driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators, Rasic told SGV CityWatch. The closure is affecting southbound lanes of Peck Road at Emery Street. Officers responded around 2:08 p.m. on a report of a mail carrier unresponsive in his truck. Officers arrived and performed CPR until Los Angeles County Firefighter paramedics could work to save him. He died at the scene, according to Lt. Doug Knight of the El Monte Police Department. The mail carrier died in the 3700 block of Baldwin Avenue, according to Sarah Ardalani, public information officer with the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. The carrier was identified at 56-year-old Ian Roxas. The cause of death was deferred, pending additional investigation, according to coroner records. No foul play is suspected, Knight told SGV CityWatch. U.S. Postal Service personnel took possession of the mail truck and its contents, Knight told SGV CityWatch. The incident occurred at First Works Baptist Church, 2600 Tyler Ave. around 1:13 a.m. “The Federal Bureau of Investigation responded overnight with members of the El Monte Police Department and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department to an “IED” attack at the First Works Baptist Church in El Monte, California. Bomb Technicians and an Evidence Response Team are processing the scene which sustained damage. No injuries were reported. A Joint Investigation is underway for the person or group responsible for the attack,” according to Lt. Michael Buckhannon of the El Monte Police Department in a written statement. Firefighters arrived on scene and observed smoke coming from the attic of a one-story church. Upon entering the church, firefighters found no active flames, according to a dispatch supervisor with the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Firefighters were dispatched to 9900 E. Valley Boulevard at 7:47 p.m. November 22. Fire ignited in an abandoned 50-foot by 100-foot one-story building, according to Dispatch Supervisor Imogene McBride of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Firefighters knocked down flames at 9:23 p.m., McBride told SGV CityWatch. The cause is under investigation. El Monte Police officers were dispatched to the 10000 block of Valley Boulevard around 2:10 p.m. November 19. While being initially short on specific details, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s homicide detectives stated the victim was hospitalized, but later died. A victim was found stabbed at the scene in the 4400 block of Bannister Avenue. The adult male reportedly stabbed himself in the chest. He was transported in serious condition, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. A one-story home, detached garage and two sheds burned just after Noon September 12.
An arson investigator and El Monte Police were called to the scene, according to Los Angeles County Fire Department radio traffic. The cause of the fire is under investigation. No other victims were found. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor EL MONTE - It took 25 firefighters under one hour to knock down a massive fire in an El Monte strip mall Saturday morning that was affected by fire previously.
The fire burned in a strip mall at 10113 E. Valley Blvd. around 1:32 a.m. July 25. Firefighters could only knock down flames from the outside due to structural integrity issues caused by the previous fire, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. While the Los Angeles County Fire Department said that the structure was affected by a fire one month prior, there were at least two major fires that burned in the last two months alone to the same location for structure fires. A portion of the same strip mall burned July 20. No victims were found. This same strip mall originally burned May 14. A third-alarm response was called after fire in the attic portion of the strip mall caused extensive damage throughout the structure. The cause is under investigation. |
