Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor AZUSA - Using a minor use of force, SWAT officers took a barricaded man into custody just after 5:30 p.m. after a roughly five-hour standoff. The suspect is accused of assaulting his father in the 800 block of West Sixth Street near Virginia Avenue. First responders were called to the scene around 11:23 a.m., according to Lt. Jake Bushey of the Azusa Police Department. “We had probable cause to believe he attacked the father with some kind of object. The suspect then barricaded himself in a rear house,” Bushey told SGV CityWatch. The father ended up receiving only minor injuries. Members of the Azusa police swat team use a flash bang grenade and, through a loudspeaker, periodically ordered the suspect to surrender. Tear gas was deployed inside the home. The suspect exited and was detained by officers, Bushey told SGV CityWatch. He was treated by firefighters and taken away by an ambulance. No officers were injured, and apparently the suspect was uninjured as well during the use of force, Bushey told SGV CityWatch. The suspect is expected to be booked on suspicion of elder abuse, Bushey told SGV CityWatch. Officers initially descended upon the Sycamore Park Apartments, 1151 W. Arrow Hwy., near Vincent Avenue before 5 p.m. on a report of potential gunfire coming from one of the apartment units April 2. Officers did not locate evidence of gunfire, but did find the suspect they have been seeking for months. Roy M. Garcia, 66, was taken into custody after initially refusing to surrender to officers. After being told gunfire was coming from within the complex, Azusa officers called mutual aid assistance from Glendora Police and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. A Sheriff’s helicopter circled overhead, a deputy’s voice boomed from a loudspeaker, ordering Garcia to surrender. Garcia was sought on suspicion of criminal threats, brandishing a weapon or firearm, committing a hate crime and resisting, delaying, or obstructing an officer, crimes allegedly committed December 27, 2022. Garcia is being held in lieu of $50,000 bail ahead of a scheduled appearance in the Inmate Reception Center in Los Angeles ahead of a scheduled appearance in the West Covina Courthouse April 4. The teen gangbanger ran from a vehicle which refused to initially stop for police who sought the driver for a vehicle code violation near Arrow Highway and Citrus Avenue around 7:50 p.m. Monday, according to the Azusa Police Department. The vehicle stopped outside of 717 E. Arrow Hwy. before the teen ran. “A male passenger fled from the front passenger seat and ran from officers while visibly holding a firearm in his hands. As an Azusa Police Officer gave chase, the suspect threw the firearm nearby and he was safely detained,” according to the Azusa Police Department in a written statement. The teen was booked on suspicion of firearms related charges, including resisting delaying, or obstructing a peace officer. Joe Monge, 41, was arrested Thursday, March 16, through the work of Azusa Police detectives and four Los Angeles County Fire Department arson investigators. A cell phone warrant was obtained to track Monge’s location, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The fire Monge is accused of setting burned February 24 around 7:10 a.m. in the 600 block of North Angeleno Avenue in a garage. No injuries were reported, according to the Azusa Police Department. County booking records detailing Monge’s arrest March 16 were not available. The shooting took place in the 600 block of North Glennfinan Avenue just before 1:30 a.m. Saturday, March 11. Detectives do not believe the shootings were gang related, according to Cpt. Robert Landeros of the Azusa Police Department. It is believed that the three victims, who are homeless, reside in the area where the shooting occurred, Landeros told SGV CityWatch. Christian Peña, 24, died of a gunshot wound to the leg. The death was ruled a homicide, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. A passerby saw the naked body face down in the dirt off to the side of the 2000 block of San Gabriel Canyon Road just before 6:30 a.m. February 13. Detectives believe that Peña was shot elsewhere and dumped along the mountain road after detectives were unable to find any shell casings, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau. Investigators did not have a California ID for Peña, but noted that he last listed New York as his state of residence. The anonymous tipster notified Azusa High School staff to report a student in possession of a handgun on the campus, 240 N. Cerritos Ave., March 3. An investigation by the Azusa Police Department and school administrators led to two students being arrested. “AUSD policy, and state law, consider the possession of a gun on a school campus to be a serious disciplinary matter as well as a criminal matter, and the situation is being handled as such,” according to the Azusa Unified School District in written statement. The district is unwilling to share further details due to privacy laws and the ongoing investigation. Juvenile was shot and a 200 block of East Newburgh Street just after 5:30 p.m. Monday. A vehicle was seen fleeing westbound on Newburgh Street, according to Sgt. Bailey of the Azusa Police Department. Bailey could not describe the vehicle that fled from the scene. Few other details are publicly available as Azusa Police detectives have now taken over the investigation. First responders were dispatched to the 200 block of East Newburgh Street near Donna Bath Avenue around 5:36 p.m. Monday, February 27. The trauma patient was taken to a hospital for a treatment, according to Dispatch Supervisor Michael Pickett of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Information from the Azusa Police Department was limited at the time this story was launched. It is believed that police will be out at the scene investigating for at least a few hours. The unidentified man is prohibited from possessing firearms under the state’s Armed and Prohibited Persons System database. Seized were four machine guns, seven assault weapons, a short-barreled rifle, four suppressors/silencers, six handguns, one shotgun, four rifles, 54 lower receivers/frames, 41 standard capacity magazines, 87 large-capacity magazines, and approximately 35,000 rounds of miscellaneous ammunition, according to the DOJ’s office. Agents initially intended to seize one weapon in question from the suspect, but then discovered the large cache of additional weapons and ammunition after serving a search warrant, according to the DOJ’s office. The DOJ arrested the man and brought felony charges against him. The man initially refused to allow agents from the DOJ’s Bureau of Firearms into his home, but agents obtained a search warrant. The suspect was charged by DOJ’s Criminal Law Division with multiple felonies, including unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of an assault weapon, intentional conversion of a firearm into a machine gun, possession of a machine gun, unlawful assault weapon activity, unlawful manufacture or possession of a short-barreled rifle or shotgun, unlawful possession of ammunition, and possession of a silencer. He was arraigned February 17 in Los Angeles County Superior Court, Pomona, according to the DOJ. “This arrest demonstrates exactly why the Armed and Prohibited Persons system is vital for the safety of our communities,” said Attorney General Bonta. “In our efforts to retrieve just one gun from a prohibited individual, we found dozens of illegal weapons and thousands of rounds of ammunition. I am grateful for our Bureau of Firearms agents’ work in getting these illegal weapons out of the hands of this prohibited individual.” |
