Ricardo Guzman, a 40-year-old Azusa man, allegedly refused to stop for officers just before 7 p.m. near Louise Avenue and Paramount Street February 12. Guzman reportedly struck another vehicle, but was able to still evade officers, according to the Azusa Police Department. Guzman continued to flee through the neighborhood streets and collided with a second motorist at Arrow Highway and Lark Ellen Avenue where he then fled on foot. He was quickly captured by officers, Azusa Police said. Police later found and seized narcotics from inside the pursuit vehicle. Guzman was booked on suspicion of felony evading, felony hit-and-run, misdemeanor hit-and-run and possession of illegal narcotics. He also had an outstanding no-bail parole warrant out for his arrest, Azusa police said. Guzman is currently being held at the Men’s Central Jail in Los Angeles ahead of a scheduled appearance at the West Covina courthouse February 16, according to Los Angeles County booking records. Daniel Phillip Cruz, 39, whose last known address was in Azusa, allegedly attempted to strike officers while fleeing a traffic stop at Target, 809 N. Azusa Ave., around 12:20 p.m. December 24, according to the Azusa Police Department. Officers pursued Cruz through several neighboring cities, Azusa Police said. Cruz at one point fled eastbound on Arrow Highway with a helicopter and officers on the ground trailing him into the La Verne and Pomona areas. He eventually made his way into Ontario. Cruz eventually stopped on the 15 freeway near Fourth Street. “The suspect refused to comply with officers demands to exit the stolen vehicle, causing a traffic hazard for motorists,” according to Sgt. Brandon Bailey of the Azusa Police Department in written statement. A K9 was deployed and famously was seen on television leaping into the driver side window of the stolen vehicle. The K9 bit down on Cruz’s left arm and the suspect struck the K9 multiple times before officers forcefully removed from the vehicle. Assisting were the California Highway Patrol and the Ontario Police Department. “The suspect sustained injuries during the arrest and he was transported to a local hospital for further treatment, prior to booking,” Bailey said. Cruz will be charged with felony evading, assault on a peace officer and willful injury to a peace officer’s animal, Bailey said. Officers accuse Azusa man Jacob Black, 36, of felony evading, being a felon in possession of a firearm, possession of a short barrel shotgun, possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number, obstructing an officer, driving with a suspended license and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to the Glendora Police Department. Glendora Police allege they attempted to perform a traffic stop on Black who allegedly committed a series of traffic violations around 6 a.m. September 16. Black accelerated and led officers on a high-speed chase that ended with a foot pursuit in Azusa, Glendora Police said. Black was stopped and arrested quickly. “While he was being taken into custody, officers found a fully loaded, sawed off shotgun concealed underneath his clothing,” Glendora Police said in a written statement. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor AZUSA – A cab driver is recovering from facial lacerations after his rider allegedly stabbed him and took off with his cab, police said. Azusa man Oscar Jacques, 30, was located in the stolen cab in Los Angeles. He led authorities on a pursuit into South Los Angeles where he surrendered without incident, Azusa Police said. The alleged assault and carjacking occurred September 9 around 8:51 a.m. in the 200 block of North Soldano Avenue. Police found only the cab driver with multiple lacerations to his face. He was later hospitalized for his wounds, Azusa Police said.
The suspect and cab were located in Los Angeles. A traffic stop was conducted, but Jacques refused to yield and fled from the California Highway Patrol before he yielded and surrendered without further incident at Florence Avenue and Menlo Avenue, Azusa Police said. Jacques was booked on suspicion of attempted murder, carjacking and failure to yield. He is being held in lieu of $1 million ahead of a scheduled appearance in West Covina Court Monday, September 14. The driver, 37-year-old Christopher Smith, refused to yield for officers attempting a traffic stop for multiple vehicle code violations at First Street and Cerritos Avenue just after 3 p.m. July 3, according to the Azusa Police Department. The pursuit continued along surface streets where Smith allegedly hit another vehicle in the 100 block of North Cerritos Avenue. Smith crashed his vehicle on a residential lawn in the 500 block of North Azusa Avenue. Both Smith and passenger Trisha Mehta, from Anaheim, fled on foot, Azusa Police said. Smith was caught a short distance in the 400 block of North Alameda Avenue. He was booked on suspicion of felony evading, hit and run, resisting arrest and was also booked on a no-bail warrant. Mehta, 23, was booked on suspicion of possessing a controlled substance and providing false information to an officer. The innocent driver struck by Smith was uninjured, Azusa Police said. Officers responding to a shooting report found a condo unit in the 600 block of East Lee Place was damaged around 7:50 p.m., according to Sgt. Nick Covarrubias of the Azusa Police Department. Police were told of a white Kia seen fleeing the area. After locating and attempting to stop the driver, officers gave chase when the driver refused to stop, Covarrubias told SGV CityWatch. The suspects, including a juvenile, fled from Azusa and California Highway Patrol officers who attempted to stop them along surface streets and freeways in Azusa, Glendora, Baldwin Park, El Monte and San Dimas. The white sedan driven by one of the suspects crashed into another vehicle outside Target, 888 W. Arrow Hwy.
Two suspects ran from the Kia after it crashed and ran through the shopping center, but officers found them and detained them. Three others still occupying the vehicle were also detained, Covarrubias told SGV CityWatch. Two people inside the sedan that was hit, a woman and boy, were not seriously injured. The boy was hospitalized as a precaution, Covarrubias told SGV CityWatch. The suspect names were not readily available Tuesday morning, but among the charges the driver faces include felony evading and felony hit and run. Attempted murder will also be considered for the triggerman, Covarrubias told SGV CityWatch. It was not immediately clear if gang affiliations factored into the shooting. The white Kia was not registered to any of the suspects, Covarrubias told SGV CityWatch. The unnamed suspect was witnessed carrying around what an eyewitness described as an assault rifle at Pioneer Park, 1300 N. Dutton Ave., Just after 1:30 p.m. April 5, According to the Azusa Police Department. The suspect drove away from the park, but officers obtained a description of the suspect vehicle and he was located in the area of foothill Boulevard and Vernon Avenue in Azusa. The suspect refused to stop for officers and fled into Duarte where he eventually crashed Into a fence after losing control near Huntington Drive and Las Lomas Avenue, Azusa police said. “He was quickly apprehended by pursuing officers after a brief struggle, which included The suspect resisting and spitting on officers,” according to the Azusa police department in a written statement. Several replica assault rifles and handguns were located in the suspect’s vehicle. A motive for the suspect’s possession of these replica weapons is not known. The 22-year-old suspect from Rosemead was booked on suspicion of felony evading, brandishing a replica firearm, Resisting arrest and hit-and-run, Azusa police said. No police officers, or civilians were injured during the pursuit. The suspect, 20-year-old Daniel Garcia-Zermeno, an Azusa resident, fled from officers in the 100 block of South Azusa Avenue, December 19. A passing motorist witnessed a foot pursuit and intervened to help police stop him, according to the Azusa police department in a written statement. “As officers were taking the suspect into custody, they found he was in possession of A loaded firearm, ammunition, and concentrated cannabis,” Azusa police said.
Garcia-Zermeno was booked on various charges including weapons related charges drug related charges and resisting arrest Azusa police said. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor AZUSA - Police, with the help of Sheriff’s deputies, arrested a suspect behind the wheel of a vehicle stolen yesterday. 21-year-old John Tan was taken into custody near Huntington Drive and Buena Vista Street In Duarte after fleeing Azusa officers who tried to stop him in the stolen vehicle, according to the Azusa Police Department. Tan fled officers around 9:39 a.m. December 9 at high speed and committed numerous vehicle code violations before entering the west 210 freeway. Officers terminated the pursuit after three minutes due to the suspect’s reckless driving, Azusa Police said.
Tan was last seen exiting onto Buena Vista Street. Several good samaritans helped deputies from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Temple Station locate Tan in the stolen vehicle. He was arrested and is being held in lieu of $75,000 bail. Tan is scheduled to appear in West Covina Superior Court December 11, according to Los Angeles County booking records. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor AZUSA - Four suspects in a stolen vehicle were arrested Friday night after leading Azusa Police on a three-minute chase into Covina. The unidentified suspects were taken into custody at East Calora Street and North Grand Avenue November 8. A handgun tossed by a suspect was recovered, as well as a second handgun found in the vehicle, according to Sgt. Nick Covarrubias of the Azusa Police Department. The suspects fled an officer attempting a traffic stop in the area of North Alameda Avenue and East Second Street around 9:44 p.m. The driver reportedly committed a traffic violation, Covarrubias said. The driver fled at high speed and ran red lights during the brief chase, which took several side streets before terminating.
The suspects, all males, were taken into custody without further incident. One suspect was also in possession of an illegal knife, Covarrubias said. The handgun tossed from the vehicle stolen, which was reported in Azusa November 7, was found at North Grand Avenue and Arrow Highway, Covarrubias said. The underage suspect was taken to a juvenile hall. The names of the adult suspects have yet to be publicly released. |
