Police attempted to speak with the suspect who reportedly battered his mother. Officers were called to the residence and after officers attempted to speak with the suspect, he attacked them, according to Lt. Brett Bourgeous of the Arcadia Police Department. The incident occurred in the 400 block of East Live Oak Avenue around 6:39 p.m. “When officers attempted contact with the son at the front door of the apartment, he attacked them by throwing several knives and a hatchet at the officers,” Bourgeous said in a written statement. Officers were able to block the knife attacks and safely evacuated residents in neighboring apartment units. The suspect challenged officers to shoot him, according to Arcadia Police radio traffic. The Arcadia Police Special Weapons and Tactics team was mobilized and negotiated with the suspect to surrender, which he ultimately did. The extent of the mother’s injuries is unclear. The unidentified suspect was booked on suspicion of felony charges, including assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer and battery. He is being held in the Arcadia Police jail in lieu of $70,000 bail. Bertha Hernandez, 35, was identified by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. She died from a gunshot wound to the head. Hernandez was driving a black Mercedes Benz east on the 210 freeway when the shooting occurred near Baldwin Avenue. CHP officers were called to a collision and found the car had crashed into a sound wall, according to the California Highway Patrol. Hernandez was declared dead at the scene, according to the California Highway Patrol. The events leading up to the shooting are either unknown, or have yet to be publicly shared. The collision occurred near First Avenue and Santa Clara Street around 10:49 p.m. September 5. Officers responded to the scene, located the pedestrian and called for medical help. The pedestrian was taken to an area hospital, according to the Arcadia Police Department. The pedestrian’s current condition is not immediately known. at 11:12 p.m., the Metropolitan Transportation Authority summoned shuttles for passengers as train service stopped between the Sierra Madre Villa Station and Monrovia Station. At 7:22 a.m. Monday, Metro authorities announced train service resumed. CHP responded to the scene at 9:05 a.m. September 4, according to Officer Peter Nicholson of the California Highway Patrol. Nicholson has preliminary information on a possible suspect vehicle involved but is waiting from a investigators on scene to develop better information before publicly sharing a description of the vehicle involved. All eastbound traffic is being diverted off at Michillinda Avenue. Nicholson was unaware of other injuries involved in the crash. Whether the victim died from the crash or from possibly being shot is not immediately known. The crash occurred around 10:50 p.m. at Las Tunas Drive and Baldwin Avenue. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger was taken to Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena with serious injuries, according to the Arcadia Police Department. The victim was only described as a man in his 60s. The coroner is awaiting notification of next of kin, according to Sarah Ardalani, public information officer with the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. A suspected drunk driver was eastbound on Las Tunas Drive when the driver lost control while traveling at high speed, crossed the raised median and slammed into the other vehicle head-on, according to the Arcadia Police Department. The suspected DUI driver appeared uninjured. The driver was also taken to Huntington Memorial for evaluation, according to the Arcadia Police Department. It is not yet publicly known if the suspect DUI driver has been arrested. The second-alarm fire burned in the apartment complex, 2607 S. Santa Anita Ave, just after 4 a.m. June 13. It is not immediately clear if a cause has been determined. It took firefighters more than one hour to fully extinguish the flames, according to the Arcadia Fire Department. Assisting agencies included the Monrovia, Pasadena, South Pasadena, San Gabriel and Los Angeles County Fire departments. A witness told police of a burglary at Papa John’s Pizza, 1312 S. Baldwin Ave., around 5:11 a.m. May 14. The suspects fled in a white van east on Naomi Avenue, but officers caught up to them, according to the Arcadia Police Department. The three unidentified suspects were arrested after officers concluded they were involved in the burglary, Arcadia Police said. Two of the three suspects also had arrest warrants from other cities. They were booked on suspicion of burglary and for weapons crimes, Arcadia Police said. Police were called to the 500 block of Fairview Avenue just before 5 a.m. to investigate a reported catalytic converter theft that just occurred. Officers found a suspicious vehicle and conducted a traffic stop, according to the Arcadia Police Department. “During their investigation, the officers located two catalytic converters, several saws, and a vehicle jack,” the Arcadia Police Department said in a written statement. Both suspects who were unidentified were subsequently arrested. The unidentified suspect attempted to pry open the rear door of a home in the 700 block of Callita Street at 4 a.m. May 3. He fled on foot once he set off the alarm, according to the Arcadia Police Department. The resident was able to witness the crime through security camera footage as the suspect failed to breach the locked door. Responding officers located the suspect at 712 Callita Street and he was taken into custody after an investigation. |
