After a better assessment of fire activity, authorities now say 2,500 acres have burned. No containment has been reached, according to the US Forest Service. “Fire activity is expected to increase today due to forecasted weather conditions,” the US Forest Service said. Evacuees from the Mountain Cove gated community were allowed to return home after orders were lifted at 11 p.m. Thursday, according to the Azusa Police Department. The Ranch Fire was first reported around 2:45 p.m. August 13. The fire ignited along Highway 39 and Ranch Road, near homes nestled in the San Gabriel Mountains. Roughly an hour into the firefight, some residents of Mountain Cove were issued a mandatory evacuation order. Certain residents were under voluntary evacuations, according to the Azusa Police Department. As the day progressed, the Fire, while still posing a threat, inched away from homes. 200 fire personnel are on scene. Fire vehicles will remain in the area for the next three days to monitor fire activity. A lot of what burned included trash, bulk property and dumpster contents throughout the two cities. No injuries were reported. The incidents begin in Covina the afternoon of April 4, where police and firefighters investigated two outside fires in the area of Azusa Avenue and Covina Boulevard, two fires in an abandoned building At 1060 W. San Bernardino Rd., one incident near a Walmart and two more incidents in the 1400 block of N. Azusa Ave., according to Lieutenant Daniel Reagan of the Covina Police Department. One of the earliest fires at firefighters responding to whisper a garbage fire at 1054 N. Azusa Ave. in Covina at 4:18 p.m., according to Los Angeles county fire department dispatch reports. At 4:54 PM, firefighters were sent to another reported fire in the same area.
At 5:38 p.m., firefighters were sent to a structure fire at the Covina Bowl property, 1060 W. San Bernardino Rd. At 7:51 p.m. firefighters extinguished a garbage fire at N. Azusa Ave. and West Grondahl Street. At 8:05 p.m., another fire was reported, this one at 1421 N. Azusa Ave. in Covina. In Azusa, firefighters and police responded to two fires in the 200 block of East Newburgh Street. “Officers were able to view surveillance and identify a suspect who they found about a block away. There was some medical issues involved, so he was cited and taken to a hospital,” according to Sgt. Bailey of the Azusa Police Department. The suspects name was not released. Alberto Panganiban, 26, died from inhalation of products of combustion. The death was ruled accidental, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Exminer-Coroner. The cause of death for Alberto’s father, 63-year-old Angelito Panganiban, is still deferred pending additional investigation, the coroner said. The fire burned in a two-story apartment complex in the 800 block of W. 13th St. Firefighters were dispatched at 9:12 p.m., extinguished the flames at 9:46 p.m., according to Dispatch Supervisor Martin Rangel of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Rangel initially told SGV CityWatch that one person perished, but Franklin Lopez of Los Angeles County Fire confirmed the actual number of deaths. KTLA 5 reported a father and his disabled adult son were the people found dead. Cause investigators with the Los Angeles County Fire Department were called to examine the fire, Rangel said, adding that there were no injured people transported. One other person was hospitalized with unspecified injuries. The cause is still being determined. An adjacent unit has smoke damage and the occupants will be displaced, according to Los Angeles County Firefighters on scene. The fire was burning in the Sylvan Villa Estates, 830 S. Azusa Ave. The fire was officially knocked down as of 5:37 p.m. It is not yet clear if any people were inside the mobile home when the fire ignited. The condition of the dogs is not immediately clear. Animal control officers were called to the scene, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Firefighters initially arrived to light smoke coming from a single-wide mobile home and found flames burning within. A small 20-foot by 20-foot spot fire sparked just before 11:30 p.m. October 15. Firefighters were dispatched at 11:27 p.m. to the riverbed near the 3400 block of Encanto Parkway, according to Dispatch Supervisor Miguel Ornelas of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Firefighters declared the fire knocked down at 11:56 p.m. No injuries were reported. The fire’s cause is still being investigated, Ornelas said. All transients have evacuated from the encampment. Its location is making it difficult for firefighters to extinguish the trash fire. There are no reports of injuries or structural damage to any buildings. The fire was reported around around 5:49 p.m. Firefighters have requested police to redirect traffic.
