The fire is burning in light to medium vegetation on flat terrain in the 2000 block of North San Gabriel Canyon Road, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The car fire and carport burned in the 700 block of East 5th Street jut after 7 p.m. The carport is located adjacent from the apartment complex and there was no extension of fire into the building, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Manuel Cruz Garcia was booked on suspicion of felony arson and on an outstanding warrant. Garcia allegedly set fire to several dumpsters at businesses in the area of Arrow Highway and Azusa Avenue, according to Sgt. Tommy Avila of the Azusa Police Department. Police were alerted by eyewitnesses to a dumpster fire burning behind Just Tires, 877 S. Azusa Ave., at 10:30 p.m. Garcia was then seen setting another fire in a dumpster at Covina’s El Pollo Loco, 1405 N. Azusa Ave., and Wal Mart, 1275 N. Azusa Ave. The fires were only contained to the dumpsters, causing only minimal damage, Avila said. As Azusa and Covina officers spotted him starting the fire near Wal Mart, the suspect fled on foot and a brief foot chase began, but Garcia was detained. A transient who witnessed Garcia set the fire at Just Tires was able to positively identify Garcia as the suspect, according to Azusa Police radio traffic. Garcia is being held in lieu of $310,000 bail. He is being housed in the Inmate Reception Center in Los Angeles and is scheduled to appear in West Covina Superior Court Thursday, September 27. The one-quarter-acre fire was reported to firefighters at 4:36 p.m. in the 16000 block of Foothill Boulevard. Firefighters were dispatched at 4:38 p.m., according to Dispatch Supervisor Melanie Flores of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The fire was no threat to nearby homes or businesses, according to Officer Mike Bires of the Azusa Police Department. The two engines assigned to the fire cleared the scene within 20 minutes, Flores said. The fire burned on the property of the apartments, 540 E. Gladstone St. around 3 p.m. Firefighters immediately reported smoke billowing from the rear of a unit at the 1-story apartment complex, according to Los Angeles County Firefighter radio traffic. The fire extended to the roof, causing unspecified damage. The fire was knocked down about three minutes later. One person suffered smoke inhalation, firefighters said. Arson investigators have been requested to the scene. |
