Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA - The driver of a 1990 Lexus LS400 was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving after a crash with a parked big rig killed his passenger, the California Highway Patrol said. Nathan Renee Anaya, 26, from Upland, was eastbound on the I-10 freeway at Orange Grove in the No. 4 lane at an unknown speed around 12:22 a.m. when he crashed into a 2009 Freightliner tractor trailer parked on the right shoulder, the CHP said. Anaya’s passenger died at the scene. Anaya received lacerations to his face and was hospitalized at Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center. The driver of the big rig was uninjured. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA – One person was arrested on suspicion of DUI, a second was arrested on suspicion of grand theft auto during DUI saturation patrols, Pomona Police said.
The patrols were conducted from 7 p.m. December 31 to 3 a.m. January 1. The suspect arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence was additionally booked on suspicion of grand theft auto and resisting arrest, Pomona Police said. In addition to the above arrests, officers conducted 25 enforcement stops, issued 14 citations and cited/arrested two drivers who had suspended or revoked licenses, Pomona Police said. The Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign is set to begin Friday, December 14 and last through January 1, 2019. Pomona Police will deploy DUI saturation patrols at the start of the campaign. The DUI/driver license checkpoint is scheduled for Friday, December 21, according to the Pomona Police Department. The checkpoint will run from 9 p.m. December 21 to 3 a.m. December 22. 25 people were killed statewide from December 22 to December 25, 2017 and December 30 to January 2. 643 were injured on California roads during the same period, according to the California Highway Patrol. “Whether you are at home with family or at the bar, it is important that you find a sober ride home after drinking,” said Sgt. William Knight of the Pomona Police Department. “As an adult, it is up to you to make adult decisions and drive sober, or use a ride share service. There are no excuses for driving impaired.” Funding for the campaign has been provided by a grant through the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Trevor Stevenson nearly lost his life after he was struck by an alleged DUI driver in Pomona January 10, 2017 at Garey and Garfield avenues. Stevenson was responding to a fatal hit and run crash when he was hit, Pomona Police said. Stevenson suffered major head trauma in the crash. Pomona man Pearce Bruyn, 24, the accused DUI driver, was allegedly high on marijuana when he struck Stevenson with a Ford Explorer. Bruyn stopped at the scene after the collision, according to the California Highway Patrol. Bruyn was south on Garey Avenue and turned into Stevenson’s path from the left turn lane to Garfield Avenue. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office filed a felony warrant for Bruyn’s arrest and he was taken into custody January 17, 2018, the CHP said. Bruyn was booked on suspicion of driving under the influence of a drug, causing serious injuries. Bruyn is scheduled for a preliminary hearing in Pomona Superior Court August 28. |
