The fire burned at 151 N. Reservoir St., just before 11:30 p.m. April 29. Within 10 minutes of arriving, incident commanders asked for a second-alarm response, doubling the number of firefighters on scene, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. 60 firefighters were on hand to knock down the blaze. No civilians were injured. The cause is under investigation. Aly Mejia, spokeswoman for the Pomona Police Department, confirmed the mother and stepfather of the two teen girls died Sunday, April 19. Mejia said the department would not release anymore information out of respect for the family. A person at the hospital, who wished to not be publicly identified, received word of the double suicide around 11:30 a.m. the day Jose Cervantes-Hernandez, 47, and Rosana Leyva took their lives by jumping off a hospital parking structure. The mother and stepfather landed in the trauma bay of Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center, the source told SGV CityWatch. In a gofundme post, family and friends identified the mother and 13-year-old Rosemery Gallo Leyva. The stepfather was first publicly identified by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. Rosemery was declared brain dead over the weekend. Family made the decision to take her off life support. Thay Hung Leyva, 17, died at the scene of the apartment fire in the 1100 block of East Franklin Avenue April 16. Thay and Rosemery were prevented from exiting their downstairs apartment at the front by flames, while furniture and a window-mounted air conditioner prevented escape from the rear. Thay died from thermal burns and inhalation of products of combustion, the coroner said. The girls’ grandmother was also inside, but was able to escape with minor injuries. The fire’s cause is under investigation. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA - A family of three escaped a fire that claimed the lives of eight dogs early Wednesday. The fire sparked in the 1600 block of North Park Avenue just before 1:30 a.m. February 5. The fire burned in a two-story, single-family home. American Red Cross was called to assist the displaced family. Inland Valley Humane Society was called to take the dogs away, Los Angeles County Fire Department Dispatch Supervisor Martin Rangel told SGV CityWatch.

Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA - A three-acre brush fire burned near a water reclamation plant early Saturday. A helicopter was summoned to assist with the fire near 295 N. Humane Wy. Firefighters were dispatched at 4:46 a.m. July 27, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. By 5:42 a.m., several water drops helped to keep flames from progressing further, a battalion chief said.
No injuries were reported and no structures were threatened. This is the second fire to have sparked in the area. A smaller fire was fought June 4 behind the reclamation plant and was held to one acre. The driver was pulled from his burning Honda Pilot after crashing into a pole on West Temple Avenue and South University Drive just after 1 p.m. June 23. The driver was taken by helicopter to an area hospital for treatment. Investigators followed up on the driver’s status Monday morning and were told by hospital staff that the driver died, Pomona Police said.
The driver was identified at the scene, but it is not known if next of kin was notified. The driver’s name remains publicly unknown. The fire was seen in the hills to the southwest of the 200 block of Humane Way around 4:42 a.m. June 4 behind a water reclamation plant, according to Joey Napoli of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. A full brush fire response was called, including a helicopter, but the helicopter was called off, leaving the work to ground crews.
The one-acre fire burned in light to heavy vegetation and crept uphill. Firefighters on scene reported the likely source of the fire as a homeless encampment, Napoli said. The fire was reported in the 30 block of Country Wood Drive at 9:51 a.m. inside the attached garage of the single-family home, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Two vehicles were reported well-involved with fire spreading to the garage itself. The flames were knocked down around 10 a.m. No injuries were reported.
