Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor LOS ANGELES – A 17-year-old driver led the California Highway Patrol on a pursuit and ultimately crashed, causing major injuries Thursday.
The teen had to be pulled from a 2007 Dodge Charger that caught fire after crashing on the westbound I-10 freeway at Walnut Grove Avenue at 12:17 a.m. He was taken to County/USC Medical Center, according to the California Highway Patrol. CHP officers from the Baldwin Park Office attempted to stop the teen, accused of driving in excess of 100 mph on the west I-10 at West Covina Parkway. During the chase, the teen reportedly reached 125 miles per hour while using all traffic lanes, the California Highway Patrol said. After the teen crashed, CHP officers from the Baldwin Park and East Los Angeles stations found him slumped over and the vehicle ignited. The unconscious teen was pulled from the car. A City News Service story listed the driver, described as an adult male, as a fatality, but Officer Peter Nicholson of the CHP Traffic Management Center told SGV CityWatch that as of 5 a.m., the teen was in critical, but stable condition. Nicholson had no information indicating that the teen had died. With a commercial flatbed truck and chains, Charles Fettel, 35, and Raymond Loftin, 36, ripped a standalone ATM from the chase bank, 455 N. Azusa Ave., around 1:34 a.m. March 21. After seeing the ATM had been yanked from its spot at the bank, officers followed a debris trail and found a destroyed ATM and an abandoned flatbed truck, according to the west Covina Police Department. While conducting an area search, officers attempted to pull over a suspicious vehicle, but the driver refused to stop. He and his passenger fled officers to a business area on South Dugan Avenue in Azusa, according to the West Covina Police Department. After colliding into a fence, the driver and his passenger fled on foot. Officers from West Covina, Azusa and Irwindale searched for the suspects, according to reports from the scene. Both suspects, who are San Bernardino residents, were eventually found. They were booked on suspicion of burglary and grand theft. Fettel is Being held in lieu of $75,000 bail. Loftin is being held on a no-bail warrant, the West Covina Police Department said. Few details are available right now, but the pursuit lasted roughly one minute and ended in the 15000 block of Amar Road were one suspect decided to run on foot. Two additional suspects remained in the vehicle and were detained. The suspects who fled finally surrendered to officers just after midnight, according to Lt. During the chase, the suspect crashed into a curb. He fled on foot and a search helped to put the suspect behind bars, according to the West Covina Police Department. A patrol officer performed a traffic stop on a driver for vehicle code violations around 1:11 a.m. in the area of South Sentous Avenue and La Puente Road November 22. Although the driver stopped, he made a u-turn and sped away before the officer could contact him, according to the West Covina Police Department. The driver crashed at Nogales Street and La Puente Road, according to Lt. Tony Cortina of the West Covina Police Department. West Covina man Dru Benitez, 22, was booked on suspicion of felony evading, Cortina told SGV CityWatch. Benitez is being held in lieu of $170,000 bail ahead of a scheduled appearance in West Covina Court Tuesday, November 24, according to Los Angeles County booking records. The driver crashed while fleeing officers in the area of North Third Avenue and West Geneva Place. A female was arrested by officers at the scene, according to Lt. Jeff Munn of the West Covina Police Department. The driver was sought for an unspecified vehicle code violation at South Citrus Avenue and West Puente Street around 9 p.m. The pursuit didn’t last long before the driver crashed, Munn told SGV CityWatch. Covina officers are assisting with a search. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor WEST COVINA - A speeding driver led the California Highway Patrol on a reckless pursuit and briefly took refuge in an occupied home Monday, the CHP said. Jimmy Anthony Chavez, a 26-year-old Covina man, refused to stop for an officer after allegedly driving 90 miles per hour in a 65 mile per hour zone on the west I-10 freeway at West Covina Parkway. The officer attempted a traffic stop at 10:51 a.m. April 20. He pursued Chavez onto West Covina surface streets from Vincent Avenue until Chavez abandoned his vehicle in a dead end alley behind Workman Avenue west of Sunset Avenue, according to Rodrigo Jimenez of the California Highway Patrol Baldwin Park Office. “Chavez ... exited the vehicle, jumped over a backyard wall, and forcefully entered a residential structure. Mr. Chavez noticed there were people inside the structure and ran out,” Jimenez told SGV CityWatch.
Chavez fled over the resident’s front fence and ran east into another home in the 300 block of Sunset Avenue. With the help of West Covina officers and a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s helicopter, Chavez was arrested at 11:30 a.m., Jimenez told SGV CityWatch. Chavez was booked at the Sheriff’s Walnut/Diamond Bar Station on suspicion of felony evading, driving a stolen vehicle, burglary, resisting arrest and possession of stolen property. Additional charges may be pending, Jimenez told SGV CityWatch. Chavez was issued a citation and released. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor WEST COVINA – Two burglary suspects were arrested and a third suspect is outstanding after the latter attempted to carjack a hospital employee April 13. Officers, responding to an unspecified location for a burglary investigation, pursued the suspects who refused to stop around 4:35 a.m. Monday, according to the West Covina Police Department. The suspects abandoned their vehicle and fled on foot in the 14000 block of Donaldale Avenue in La Puente. While officers were setting a containment, one suspect attempted a carjacking, West Covina Police said. Baldwin Park officers learned of the crime in progress and assisted West Covina with a containment search. According to Baldwin Park Police radio traffic, the victim struck the carjacking suspect with the vehicle and should have been injured enough to have a noticeable limp.

The suspect rammed a West Covina Police car during the chase into La Puente where the driver crashed through a fence at Baldwin Academy, 1616 Griffith Ave., according to the West Covina Police Department. Officers attempted to stop the driver, David Torres, around 11 p.m. April 11 at West Covina Parkway and Vincent Avenue, West Covina Police said.
After crashing at Baldwin Academy, Torres fled and hid away in a trash can. An El Monte Police helicopter and containment search helped find Torres, West Covina Police said. A passenger, identified as Maria Garcia, remained in the crashed car and was arrested. Police pursued the driver before midnight December 8 after believing he was behind the wheel of a stolen vehicle. The chase ended in the 1000 block of Sandsprings Drive in La Puente. The passenger was detained, according to Lt. Keith Shishido of the West Covina Police Department. A containment search was set up with the help of a helicopter and Baldwin Park Police officers after the passenger made mention of a handgun, but no gun was found. Officers conducted yards searches to find the suspect. The vehicle was later determined to not be stolen, Shishido said. The passenger was eventually released. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor WEST COVINA – The suspect hit multiple times by police gunfire is expected to live after leading officers on a chase and allegedly ramming a pursuing officer’s patrol car, homicide detectives say. The 22-year-old suspect, on parole for carjacking, refused to yield for police who tried stop him for driving without license plates near Glendora Avenue and Michelle Street around 2:36 a.m. November 7, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau. The chase lasted around five minutes until the suspect entered a cul de sac on Russelee Drive north of Vine Avenue where the suspect hit a parked vehicle. “The suspect collided into a parked vehicle, then drove in reverse toward the officers, striking the patrol vehicle, at which time an officer involved shooting occurred,” according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau.
No officers were injured. The white sedan driven by the suspect is a confirmed stolen vehicle, the Sheriff’s Information Bureau said. A handgun allegedly carried by the suspect was recovered at the scene. |
