SIERRA MADRE - A man allegedly behind the wheel of a vehicle stolen in Pomona led police on a high-speed chase that ended with a crash in Glendale November 23, a police sergeant said.

Officers attempted to stop the driver in the area of Rosemead Boulevard and Foothill Boulevard around 12:12 a.m. Monday for having at least one darkened headlight and a dealership license plate. The driver refused to stop, according to Sgt. Kyle Bailey of the Sierra Madre Police Department.

“We quickly went into a pursuit. The driver ended up going onto the eastbound 210 freeway at a high rate of speed,” Bailey told SGV CityWatch.
A helicopter from Pasadena Police responded and followed the driver after officers on the ground stopped the chase.

The driver eventually entered surface streets in Glendale. The driver crashed into a parked vehicle at La Crescenta Avenue and Piedmont Avenue. He ran and abandoned a female passenger, Bailey told SGV CityWatch.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies and Glendale Police assisted Sierra Madre officers in a containment search that yielded the driver being taken into custody.

Victor Villalobos, a 28-year-old La Verne man, was booked on suspicion of grand theft auto, evading a peace officer and hit and run. He also had an outstanding misdemeanor warrant, Bailey told SGV Citywatch.

The passenger was released.

SIERRA MADRE - All trails leading from Sierra Madre to the Angeles National Forest are closed to the public, the City of Sierra Madre announced Monday.

Sierra Madre City Manager Gabriel Engeland issued the executive order while serving as the city’s director of emergency services. Anyone found violating the executive order may be arrested and fined up to $1,000, or imprisoned up to six months.
The Mt. Wilson Trail, Bailey Canyon Wilderness Park and the road leading into Chantry Flats are all closed, Sierra Madre officials said.

The Bobcat Fire crept very close to foothill homes as it burned southwest along the San Gabriel Mountains and damaged forested areas above Sierra Madre, Arcadia and Monrovia.

The fire has burned nearly 110,000 acres, mostly in steep rugged terrain of the San Gabriel Mountains. It continues to make serious headway into the Antelope Valley and has destroyed at least 29 homes, fire officials said.

SIERRA MADRE - A bear has been tranquilized after injuring a dog and its owner after defending its cub from what police described as a dog attack.

The incident unfolded around 1:44 p.m. in the 500 block of Hermosa Avenue. The resident’s dog spotted a bear cub and began attacking it in a rear yard. The cub’s mother then arrived to defend her cub, according to Interim Chief Jim Hunt of the Sierra Madre Police Department.
“The mother bear came and started attacking the dog. The homeowner ran out there and kicked the bear. The bear scratched the calves of the homeowner and bit him in the back of a knee, Hunt said.

The resident, described as a man in his 50s, and his dog will both survive their wounds, Hunt said.

The mother bear was tranquilized by the California Department of Fish & Wildlife. The bear cub remains perched in a tree in the 500 block of Auburn Avenue, Hunt said.

SIERRA MADRE - The California Department of Fish and Wildlife continues to investigate the bear attack that left an 84-year-old transient wounded.

“Due to an ongoing Department of Fish and Wildlife investigation, the gate to Chantry Flat was closed and locked this morning and must remain closed and locked through Sunday morning,” according to the Sierra Madre Police Department.
The transient, who sleeps in the Chantry Flats area, was wounded April 23 after being attacked by the bear, according to Sgt. Charles Kamchamnan of the Sierra Madre Police Department.

The transient apparently extended his arm to the bear to get the bear to sniff him when it attacked, causing wounds to the transient’s left arm and his face.

The transient fled down the foothills -- the bear apparently followed him down to Arno Drive.

Police were called to the 1200 block of Arno Drive around 11:24 p.m. after a resident called on a suspicious person ringing the doorbell. The transient was going from door to door to get help, Kamchamnan said.

Police were initially told the bear is estimated to be 200 to 300 pounds.

The transient was treated at the scene and released by Sierra Madre firefighters.
