SIERRA MADRE - A 77-year-old driver and his 70-year-old passenger escaped with minor injuries after his vehicle ran a stop sign and crashed through cement K rails and into an outdoor dining area at a restaurant Wednesday.
As of now, it is not believed that DUI played a role in the crash outside The Only Place in Town, 110 W. Sierra Madre Blvd., January 11. The vehicle came within roughly 10 feet of striking two pedestrians walking past the restaurant, according to Sgt. Charles Kamchamnan of the Sierra Madre Police Department.
First responders were sent to the crash around 5:40 p.m.
The car was being driven southbound on Auburn Avenue and ran through the stop sign at the T-intersection, according to Sgt. Kyle Bailey of the Sierra Madre Police Department. The restaurant remained partially opened during and after the crash. Patrons dined as they watched the recovery process as crews worked to remove the twisted car left perched on top of debris. Kamchamnan was not aware of potential causes as detectives now are investigating the crash, but he noted speed potentially played a factor in the crash. Both suspects approached the homes Saturday, May 14 before 10 a.m. One of the homeowners, who lives on East Alegria Avenue, said the two men asked if the house was an AirBnB while waving a cellphone around, according to Sierra Madre Police radio traffic. After their questioning, the suspects left in a black Mercedes-Benz lacking license plates. “Officers later received a call of the same males attempting to jump through a bathroom window of a residence,” according to the Sierra Madre Police Department in a written statement. Officers, with the help of Arcadia, Pasadena and Monrovia Police, set a containment search. Jordan Sells, 18, was found and booked on suspicion of burglary. Sells posted $50,000 bond. Officers attempted to stop the driver in the area of Rosemead Boulevard and Foothill Boulevard around 12:12 a.m. Monday for having at least one darkened headlight and a dealership license plate. The driver refused to stop, according to Sgt. Kyle Bailey of the Sierra Madre Police Department. “We quickly went into a pursuit. The driver ended up going onto the eastbound 210 freeway at a high rate of speed,” Bailey told SGV CityWatch. A helicopter from Pasadena Police responded and followed the driver after officers on the ground stopped the chase.
The driver eventually entered surface streets in Glendale. The driver crashed into a parked vehicle at La Crescenta Avenue and Piedmont Avenue. He ran and abandoned a female passenger, Bailey told SGV CityWatch. Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies and Glendale Police assisted Sierra Madre officers in a containment search that yielded the driver being taken into custody. Victor Villalobos, a 28-year-old La Verne man, was booked on suspicion of grand theft auto, evading a peace officer and hit and run. He also had an outstanding misdemeanor warrant, Bailey told SGV Citywatch. The passenger was released. The incident unfolded around 1:44 p.m. in the 500 block of Hermosa Avenue. The resident’s dog spotted a bear cub and began attacking it in a rear yard. The cub’s mother then arrived to defend her cub, according to Interim Chief Jim Hunt of the Sierra Madre Police Department. “The mother bear came and started attacking the dog. The homeowner ran out there and kicked the bear. The bear scratched the calves of the homeowner and bit him in the back of a knee, Hunt said.
The resident, described as a man in his 50s, and his dog will both survive their wounds, Hunt said. The mother bear was tranquilized by the California Department of Fish & Wildlife. The bear cub remains perched in a tree in the 500 block of Auburn Avenue, Hunt said. Email Newsletter! | Advertise! | Donate! The transient, who sleeps in the Chantry Flats area, was wounded April 23 after being attacked by the bear, according to Sgt. Charles Kamchamnan of the Sierra Madre Police Department.
The transient apparently extended his arm to the bear to get the bear to sniff him when it attacked, causing wounds to the transient’s left arm and his face. The transient fled down the foothills -- the bear apparently followed him down to Arno Drive. Police were called to the 1200 block of Arno Drive around 11:24 p.m. after a resident called on a suspicious person ringing the doorbell. The transient was going from door to door to get help, Kamchamnan said. Police were initially told the bear is estimated to be 200 to 300 pounds.
