Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor SIERRA MADRE - A transient living in the foothills told police he was attacked by a bear late Tuesday night. The transient, who is reported to be in his 80s, was wounded after being attacked in the Chantry Flats area of the San Gabriel Mountains. The transient walked down to neighborhoods along Arno Drive to ask for help, according to Sgt. Charles Kamchamnan. The transient’s wounds are not considered serious and the transient refused hospitalization, Kamchamnan said.
Police were called to the 1200 block of Arno Drive around 11:24 p.m. April 23 after a resident called on a suspicious person ringing the doorbell. The man was going from door to door to get help, Kamchamnan said. The transient was bleeding from the face and sustained an injury to his left arm. The bear is estimated to be 200 to 300 pounds, Kamchamnan said. The transient was treated at the scene and released by Sierra Madre firefighters. The bear was reportedly seen heading eastbound on Arno Drive from Santa Anita Avenue. The California Department of Fish & Wildlife was called to the scene. |
