IRWINDALE - A grass fire with a rapid rate of spread is burning inside Santa Fe Dam Recreational Area in Irwindale Sunday afternoon. As of 4:35 p.m., roughly one half acre has burned inside the dam. Units en route to the dam could already see a very large smoke column from several miles out. A full first alarm brush response is being sent to the Dam, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. All lanes of Longden Avenue between Live Oak Avenue and Myrtle Avenue will be closed likely into the late night for a traffic collision investigation, according to the Irwindale Police Department. The collision occurred around 5:11 p.m. June 11, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. No one else was involved in a crash. The rider died at the scene, according to Sgt. Rudy Gatto of the Irwindale Police Department. About 25 to 30 homeless living in the area of the fire were evacuated. As a precaution, firefighters have ordered Santa Fe Dam closed, even though the fire is moving northeast. IRWINDALE - A 10-acre brushfire is burning inside Irwindale’s Santa Fe Dam Recreational Area Wednesday afternoon. Firefighters were dispatched at 2:52 PM. The fire is currently running northbound and no structures are threatened, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The suspect, Adrian Ortega, a 21-year-old La Puente man, was stopped by West Covina Police at Francisquito Avenue and Sunset Avenue shortly after the deadly crash and linked Ortega’s vehicle to the hit and run, according to the Irwindale Police Department. Police responded to a reported bicyclist down on eastbound Huntington Drive on the San Gabriel River bridge around 1:40 a.m. March 27. The woman suffered significant traumatic injuries and Los Angeles County Firefighters declared her dead at the scene. Irwindale officers went to the West Covina traffic stop and took Ortega into custody. He was booke don suspicion of vehicular manslaughter, felony drunk driving and felony hit and run charges. He was held in lieu of $100,000 bail until being released on bond, according to Los Angeles County booking records. 20 to 30-mile-per-hour winds are helping the roughly-two-acre fire to spot roughly one-quarter mile ahead of the main fire, firefighters said at the scene. Firefighters are entering through West First Street and South Peckham Road on the north side of the dam and are amassing near the nature center. The direction the fire is moving will have it run into an area where fuels will be late. Firefighters believe that the fire was extinguished yourself out, according to Los Angeles County Fire Department radio traffic. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor IRWINDALE - Investigators are attempting to track down the driver of a vehicle that struck a pedestrian who later died of his injuries Tuesday morning.
Based on the evidence and witness accounts gathered at the scene, the pedestrian was struck in northbound lanes of Irwindale Avenue at the 210 freeway around 5:28 a.m February 9, according to Sgt. Rudy Gatto of the Irwindale Police Department. The driver of a grey 2015-2017 Ford F-150 Raptor fled the scene. The truck should have front end damage on the right side, Irwindale Police said. First responders found the male victim on the pavement. He suffered significant traumatic Injuries. Firefighters treated the victim at the scene before transporting him to a nearby trauma center. He later succumbed to his injuries, Gatto said. Firefighters were called by a passerby who reported seeing the man already down in lanes of traffic at 5:26 a.m. Traffic lanes on Irwindale Avenue at the 210 freeway were mostly closed for about six hours while members of the Irwindale Police Department’s Traffic Investigation Unit processed the scene with help from the Covina Police Department and Azusa Police Department. The victim’s personal belongings, including his shoes, were left strewn across the roadway. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor IRWINDALE - Firefighters made quick work of a small blaze that ignited inside of a gondola car on a freight train rolling through Irwindale Wednesday morning.
Firefighters had easy access to knock out the flames after the train paused near 15546 East Arrow Highway around 1:08 a.m. December 23. The fire was contained to one gondola and burned only cardboard content, according to the Irwindale Police Department. No injuries were reported. The gondolas appeared to be carrying large rolls of wire from one of the businesses to the east of Santa Fe Dam Recreational Area. The affected railroad line is a spur line operated by Union Pacific Railroad. Trains originate out of the Union Pacific rail yard based in Industry and follow the Metrolink passenger line up into West Covina where the spur line branches off near Azusa Canyon Road south of Arrow Highway. The spur line, dubbed the Azusa Branch, was once part of the Pacific Electric Railway and was extended after a previous “Red Car” line from Los Angeles to Glendora ceased operations in the early 1950s. The Azusa branch services one or more businesses east of Santa Fe Dam and also services a business up in the northern end of Azusa. Firefighters were dispatched just before 3 a.m. to the area east of the Lario Staging Area, 3089 E. Huntington Dr., December 6. The fire burned on the east side of Lario along the border with the Vulcan Materials property, according to the Irwindale Police Department. The fire burned one and a half acres, according to Dispatch Supervisor Bernard Peters of the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
Firefighters remained on scene until nearly 11:10 a.m., Peters told SGV CityWatch. No one was injured and no structures were threatened. Several transients living in the area near the fire were evacuated as a precaution, Irwindale Police said. The cause remains under investigation. The unidentified driver was eastbound on Lower Azusa Road west of the 605 freeway when, for unknown reasons, her car crossed into opposing lanes and eventually struck a power pole around 5:36 a.m., according to the Irwindale Police Department. The adult female was found unconscious and unresponsive by Irwindale officers who attempted to save her until paramedics arrived, but were unsuccessful, Irwindale Police said. Westbound lanes of Lower Azusa Road at the 605 freeway overpass were closed for five hours during the investigation. The cause is under investigation, Irwindale Police said. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor IRWINDALE - Firefighters extinguished a hopper fire inside of a warehouse after combustible materials inside the machinery ignited Saturday morning.
During the fire fight, the combustible materials caused an explosion. It is unclear how big the explosion was, but firefighters immediately performed an assessment and all firefighters were accounted for and no injuries were reported, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Firefighters were dispatched to a metal-clad business at 4414 N. Azusa Canyon Rd. at 5:43 a.m. November 7. The Los Angeles County Fire Department incident commander for this fire reported the explosion to dispatchers at 6:11 a.m. During the fire fight, the burning hopper was moved to outside of the building while it still burned to avoid flames from burning the building itself. While firefighters declared knocked down on the machine at 6:42 a.m., firefighters are possibly continuing to extinguish a secondary fire within the building. A possible secondary fire may be affecting an area that is 75 feet long and 15 feet high filled with sawdust, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. |
