MONTEREY PARK - There were no apparent injuries after a garbage truck burst into flames, then rolled down a street and landed in a yard Monday morning.
The garbage truck stopped in the front yard of a residence at South Abajo Drive and West Verde Vista Drive around 10:38 a.m.

The garbage truck was stationary on the road when it began to ignite. It then rolled down the road and stopped in the yard. The truck’s content of yard waste spilled on the road after it stopped.
It is unclear if the driver was in the truck when it rolled down the street. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor MONTEREY PARK - Police made quick work of a pair of accused home burglars caught leaving the scene Monday. Police were alerted to a home burglary in progress in the 1200 block of South Lincoln Avenue at 7:21 a.m. Shortly after arriving, police found and detained 32-year-old Raul Ceja and 24-year-old Analleli Geray.
Officers further investigated the duo and confirmed their involvement in the burglary, Monterey Park Police said. Ceja, a Los Angeles resident, and Geray, a South Gate resident, were both booked on suspicion of residential burglary and held in lieu of $50,000 bail. The suspects made an initial court appearance February 27. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor MONTEREY PARK - Police are scheduled to be out in force Friday, educating bicyclists, drivers and pedestrians who violate traffic laws. Police will look for drivers speeding, making illegal turns, failing to yield to pedestrians; pedestrians jaywalking, failing to yield to drivers; bicyclists riding against traffic, violating stop signs and signals ... and a whole host of other violations. “In 2018, Monterey Park Police Department has investigated 54 fatal and injury collisions involving bicyclists and pedestrians,” Monterey Park Police said.
Bicycle and pedestrian fatalities are rising at an alarming rate. In 2016, 138 bicyclists and 867 pedestrians were killed on California roads. Pedestrian fatalities are up nearly 33 percent from 2012, and the number of bicyclists killed are up nearly 25 percent over the past five years, according to Monterey Park Police. Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor MONTEREY PARK - Police announced the Friday arrest of a Los Angeles man accused of striking and critically injuring a pedestrian. Thomas Lawrence Potter, 52, was identified during the follow-up investigation. He was located and arrested without incident at 3:06 p.m. January 25, according to the Monterey Park Police Department. Potter was booked on suspicion of felony hit and run causing injuries. He is being held in lieu of $50,000. He is scheduled to appear in Alhambra Superior Court Monday.
Potter and his passenger were in a light-colored SUV when the pedestrian was struck mid-block in the 100 block of West Newmark Avenue just before 7:30 p.m. January 18, according to the Monterey Park Police Department. Potter, his passenger and the SUV were all captured on surveillance camera around the time of the crash. The suspect driver and his passenger were in a light-colored SUV when the pedestrian was struck mid-block in the 100 block of West Newmark Avenue just before 7:30 p.m., according to the Monterey Park Police Department. The female pedestrian remains in critical condition.
The SUV fled west on Newmark Avenue to northbound Ramona Avenue. The collision was reported around 7:26 p.m. in the 100 block of West Newmark Avenue. The pedestrian was crossing mid-block when a light-colored SUV with chrome rims approached westbound and hit the woman, according to the Monterey Park Police Department. The woman’s condition was not disclosed.
The SUV fled west on Newmark Avenue to northbound Ramona Avenue. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor MONTEREY PARK – A suspicious item forced precautionary evacuations of some stores at Altantic Square Monday. The Sheriff’s Arson/Explosives Detail responded to the 2000 block of South Atlantic Boulevard around 11:30 a.m. January 21. The suspicious item was found behind a store, but Deputy Trina Schrader of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau did not know which store. The unknown item didn't belong to anyone and it was fixed to a wall, according to Lt. Eric Kim of the Monterey Park Police Department. Ralph's was one of the evacuated stores, Kim said. The package was examined and deemed safe. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor MONTEREY PARK – A Rosemead man and Compton man were arrested the same evening after allegedly burglarizing a vehicle January 3. Rosemead man Jesus Orozco, 27, and Compton man Robert Milinkovich, 25, were arrested at a Rosemead residence after officers were able to identify them in connection with a vehicle burglary.
Police were called just before 8 a.m. to the 300 block of West Garvey Avenue to investigate the vehicle burglary.
“The subsequent investigation led to the identification and arrest of two suspects later that evening in the City of Rosemead,” Monterey Park Police said in a written statement. Orozco was booked on suspicion of auto burglary and identity theft. He is being held without bail due to a probation hold, Monterey Park Police said. Milinkovich was booked on suspicion of auto burglary. His bail is set at $20,000. Both men have since appeared in Alhambra Superior Court. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor EAST LOS ANGELES - Two vandalism suspects were arrested Sunday after crashing their vehicle while fleeing Monterey Park Police.
Details are few, but the suspects were wanted by Monterey Park Police in connection with a vandalism at a city park, according to the California Highway Patrol. Monterey Park Police cancelled the pursuit due to the driver’s erratic behavior on the road, according to CHP radio traffic. A police helicopter located the suspects driving in excess of 100 miles per hour on the westbound 60 freeway into East Los Angeles just after 2 p.m. On surface streets, the suspect continued fleeing at high speed, driving in opposing lanes and running a vehicle off the road, according to CHP radio traffic. The suspect vehicle crashed into a traffic sign at North Brannick Avenue and Dozier Street where a brief foot pursuit ensued before the suspects were apprehended by East Los Angeles CHP units and Monterey Park Police. The Monterey Park Police Department has yet to return calls for information. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor MONTEREY PARK - Police found property taken in a rash of vehicle burglaries during an early-morning traffic stop Saturday. The property was discovered during a traffic stop in the 2000 block of South Atlantic Boulevard around 2:25 a.m. The property was taken from vehicles that same night, according to Sgt. Rick Munder of the Monterey Park Police Department. Arrested were 31-year-old Luis Flores, 25-year-old Claudia Moreno and 26-year-old Adrian Molina. All are residents of Los Angeles. It was not divulged how many vehicles were burglarized, or what prompted the traffic stop. |
