The suspect was shot and killed by a Pomona police officer after the sword-wielding man reportedly advanced towards the officer with the weapon in hand, Sheriff’s homicide investigators said in a written statement. Police originally responded to the 200 block of South Reservoir Street at 7:15 p.m. March 30 for an assault with a deadly weapon report. The suspect, only describe as a Hispanic man in his 40s, died at the scene. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA - Detectives arrested two men March 17 who were accused of violently beating and stabbing a man outside a convenience store in February. 25-year-old Jeremiah Mendez and 24-year-old Fernando Mendez, both Ontario residents, were taken into custody outside their home in the 1800 block of East Fifth Street as they sat an a parked vehicle. The brutal attack occurred outside a convenience store in the 1500 block of N. Indian Hill Blvd. the suspects approached the victim who is standing outside of the store and punched and stabbed him, Pomona Police said.
The victim underwent surgery after surviving the attack, Pomona Police said. Both suspects were booked on suspicion of attempted murder and a criminal street gang enhancement, Pomona Police said. Jeremiah is being held without bail. Fernando is being held in lieu of $2 million bail ahead of a schedule appearance in Pomona superior Court Friday, March 20, According to Los Angeles County booking records. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA - A Norco man was arrested Friday after recklessly evading police throughout Pomona and keeping them at bay during a brief standoff. Raul Salas, 37, rammed a police car as officers exited their vehicle near Holt Avenue and Currier Street around 12:38 a.m. March 6. Salas then hit a parked vehicle and led officers on a pursuit, Pomona Police said.
Salas allegedly made several more attempts to flee by ramming another police car after he drove through a car wash and stopped at a dead end, Pomona Police said. Salas was eventually taken into custody and booked on suspicion of assaulting a peace officer, felony evading and driving under the influence. He also had an outstanding burglary warrant, Pomona Police said. Pomona man Quintial Brown, 26, was arrested in the 3100 block of West Temple Avenue. He was booked on suspicion of murder, robbery, criminal threats and witness intimidation. Brown allegedly fought with his victim, 60-year-old Jorge Luis Lopez, December 29, 2019 in the 600 block of East Holt Avenue. Brown was released due to insufficient evidence at the time and potential self defense issues, Pomona Police said.
The victim was hospitalized with severe head trauma and died January 13, Pomona Police said. Investigators discovered new evidence in the circumstances prior to the fight and the case against Brown was resubmitted with the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, which issued an arrest warrant, Pomona Police said. Six suspects in the January 3 robbery were identified. So far, Larry Barron, 33, and Timothy Wright, 19, were arrested, Pomona Police said. Barron and Wright, both from Rialto, were booked on suspicion of attempted murder and robbery. A woman and her adult son were approached by a group of males who robbed them at gunpoint. The mother and son were both found wounded by gunfire at 883 Buena Vista St. at 9:50 p.m. As the mother was being robbed, her son intervened and both ended up shot. The mother was last listed in stable condition. The son was listed in critical condition. Both Barron and Wright were booked on suspicion of robbery and attempted murder. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA - 15 years plus 375 years to life is what is ahead for a man convicted of raping his biological daughters and two other victims, Pomona Police announced. Arthur Mendez, a 45-year-old Pomona man, was convicted on 24 counts in November 2019 related to the assaults, according to the Pomona Police Department. Charges included: -One count of forcible penetration with a foreign object -Five counts of rape by force or fear -One count of lewd and lascivious acts with a minor age 14 or 15 -Nine counts of willful child endangerment -One count of sodomy by force or fear -One count of forcible penetration with a victim under age 14 -One charge of oral copulation with a child younger than 14 -One count of sodomy by force on a child under 14 -Four counts of lewd acts on a child by force At sentencing, Mendez had counts 12 and 13 of willful child endangerment because they are outside the statute of limitations, according to Shaira Davila-Morales, chief of media relations for the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
Officers became aware of the assaults in 2018 when they responded to a 14-year-old runaway. The girl, one of Mendez’s daughters, told officers of what transpired. “The 14-year-old disclosed that her biological father had been sexually abusing her for approximately 2 months and her twin sister for approximately 1 year,” the Pomona Police Department said in a written statement. “The victim also stated her 10 and 12-year-old sisters had witnessed the sexual abuse.” During a 2019 preliminary hearing where Mendez’s daughters appeared, two additional victims came forward, Pomona Police said. Both additional victims are now 26 years old. One victim was raped between the ages of 9 and 12 years old. The other was raped at 16. Mendez was found guilty after a four-day trial. Mendez must also register for life as a sex offender, Davila-Morales said. Police found a man with a gunshot wound to the upper torso after responding to a report of a shooting victim in the 600 block of Mayfair Avenue around 1:07 a.m. January 2. The man was taken to Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center and is in stable condition, Pomona Police said. The unidentified suspects fled in a vehicle, Pomona Police said. The suspect, who remains unnamed, was identified as a Pomona resident through the work of the police department’s Special Investigations Unit. He is accused in a series of robberies from July 29 to September 8. The suspect targeted cell phone stores, gas stations with mini marts and also targeted insurance offices — all within a close geographical area, Pomona Police said.
One of the suspect’s Crimes was caught on surveillance camera August 31 when he fought with a female employee at an insurance office and ultimately stole cash. “We would like to thank the community and the media for their assistance with this incident. We are grateful for our continued partnership to make this community safe for all our residents and visitors,” Pomona Police said in a written statement. The suspect was recorded as he violently attacked an employee at ALE Insurance, 1285 S. Garey Ave., August 31. The suspect pretended to be a customer, left the business and returned with a knife he brandished from his waistband. The suspect and employee fought each other; the latter grabbed for the knife as the suspect kept the employee at bay by holding her long hair. The employee was slammed against a bookshelf and held against the floor.
The suspect eventually stole roughly $1,000 from the employee’s desk. The armed suspect is wanted in connection for three gas station robberies where money from the cash register was demanded while brandishing a weapon, Pomona Police said. 26-year-old Jacob Makwana was booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, throwing an object at moving vehicle with intent to cause great bodily injury felony vandalism, according to the Pomona Police Department. A concerned resident witnessed Makwana and others possibly involved in illegal dumping around 10:30 a.m. August 9 near Towne Avenue and the 60 freeway. The resident told the group to stop and called police. Makwana became irate at the resident who began recording him. He began hitting the resident’s vehicle. Makwana rushed back to the SUV, grabbed and large cement boulder and struck the resident’s windshield, causing heavy damage. Makwana fled in the SUV. Police identified Makwana from the video and sought public assistance in apprehending him. |
