Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor SAN MARINO – A San Gabriel man was finally taken into custody early Thursday after keeping children and their grandmother hostage inside a home. Several hostages were successfully rescued by Sheriff’s deputies assisting with negotiations after the suspect refused to free them. The barricaded suspect exited the home around 3 a.m. after hours of negotiations and was taken down by a K9 after refusing commands, San Marino Police said. The suspect, John Gabriel, began arguing with family of his estranged wife in the 2100 block of Sherwood Road around 10:30 p.m. September 11. Gabriel then brandished a handgun, according to Detective K. Cordischi of the San Marino Police Department. Officers arrived and several residents fled the home, leaving a grandmother and several children inside, Cordischi said.
The grandmother and children were reportedly barricaded in a room on the second floor of a home, according to San Marino Police radio traffic. Police departments from Pasadena, San Gabriel and other agencies, including the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Bureau, worked to bring the barricade to a peaceful end, but Gabriel refused to comply with pleas to surrender. Gabriel was hospitalized with injuries sustained from the K9. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor SAN MARINO - A man who escaped an ambulance Sunday morning surrendered to authorities after taking refuge on a residential roof. The man was coaxed down through the work of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Mental Evaluation Team, which talked to the man for at least three hours during the standoff, authorities said. It is unclear when the man was finally detained. Numerous calls to the San Marino Police Department have gone unanswered. The man was being transported in a rescue ambulance when he escaped in nothing but blue boxers at California Boulevard and Sierra Madre Boulevard in San Marino around 12:40 a.m. March 31. By the afternoon, San Marino Police and Pasadena Police searched yard to yard for the man on the Pasadena/San Marino border in the neighborhoods around San Pasqual Street and Sierra Madre Boulevard, according to San Marino Police radio traffic.
The man was found in a yard. He was very agitated, moving from the ground to the roof. Power was cut as he was seen clutching what is believed to be a power line to the home. Los Angeles County Firefighters and the Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Bureau also assisted. |
