A Sig Alert was issued for an unknown duration for the on ramp from Southbound Vincent Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol. The point of impact occurred just north of the on ramp. The shooting took place on the westbound I-10 freeway east of Sunset Avenue August 19. A La Puente man in his 30s was taken to County/USC Medical Center to be treated for multiple gunshot wounds, according to the California Highway Patrol in a written statement obtained by SGV CityWatch. According to eyewitness reports, the victim drove to an apartment complex in the 200 block of North Sunset Avenue. The sedan was peppered with bullet holes, both on at least the passenger side doors and in the front windshield. There is no information available on the suspect, or suspect vehicle, the CHP said. Anyone with information on the shooting is urged to call CHP Investigator Campos at the CHP Baldwin Park office at 626-338-1164. The No. 1 lane of the eastbound off ramp remains closed. WEST COVINA – One freeway lane has opened after a crash took a life early Thursday morning. All other lanes remain closed. A body was reported in the No. 1 lane of the eastbound I-10 freeway just west of Azusa Avenue around 4:33 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol. All other lanes remain closed for an unknown duration. It is unclear which vehicle struck and killed the pedestrian. A blue sedan was observed stopped on the right shoulder of the eastbound I-10 near where the pedestrian was discovered. An additional two to three vehicles were stopped in traffic lanes and pedestrians were seen running to the body, the CHP reported. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor WEST COVINA - A speeding driver led the California Highway Patrol on a reckless pursuit and briefly took refuge in an occupied home Monday, the CHP said. Jimmy Anthony Chavez, a 26-year-old Covina man, refused to stop for an officer after allegedly driving 90 miles per hour in a 65 mile per hour zone on the west I-10 freeway at West Covina Parkway. The officer attempted a traffic stop at 10:51 a.m. April 20. He pursued Chavez onto West Covina surface streets from Vincent Avenue until Chavez abandoned his vehicle in a dead end alley behind Workman Avenue west of Sunset Avenue, according to Rodrigo Jimenez of the California Highway Patrol Baldwin Park Office. “Chavez ... exited the vehicle, jumped over a backyard wall, and forcefully entered a residential structure. Mr. Chavez noticed there were people inside the structure and ran out,” Jimenez told SGV CityWatch.
Chavez fled over the resident’s front fence and ran east into another home in the 300 block of Sunset Avenue. With the help of West Covina officers and a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s helicopter, Chavez was arrested at 11:30 a.m., Jimenez told SGV CityWatch. Chavez was booked at the Sheriff’s Walnut/Diamond Bar Station on suspicion of felony evading, driving a stolen vehicle, burglary, resisting arrest and possession of stolen property. Additional charges may be pending, Jimenez told SGV CityWatch. Chavez was issued a citation and released. The driver fled the truck after it tipped over and crashed on the westbound I 10 freeway off ramp on Garvey Avenue east of Barranca Avenue around 3:53 p.m. 30 tons of bottled water were strewn across the roadway, according to the California Highway Patrol. A heavy duty tow truck was called to lift the approximately 70,000 pound truck back onto its wheels. No injuries were reported. The trailer caught fire and stopped on the westbound I-10 freeway near Pacific Avenue sometime after 2 a.m. March 28. The California Highway Patrol was dispatched to the scene at 2:11 a.m. according to CHP traffic logs. The trailer was hauling 30,000 pounds of tomatoes. The structural integrity of the trailer is compromised and the tomatoes are being offloaded before the trailer can be moved, the California Highway Patrol said. No injuries were reported. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor WEST COVINA - Workers spent hours lifting an overturned trailer and cleaning up the mess of tires it left Tuesday night. The crash occurred on the westbound I-10 freeway just east of Barranca Street around 7:09 p.m. There were no reported injuries, according to the California Highway Patrol. The trailer was ripped apart and spilled debris across the No. 4 & 5 lanes, with some debris spilling below onto Garvey Avenue, the CHP said.
What caused the trailer to overturn was not immediately clear. A Sig Alert was issued at 7:16 p.m. and was cancelled at 11:52 p.m. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor WEST COVINA - Two Covina residents were killed when a vehicle driven by carjacking suspect crashed into another vehicle early Saturday.
The Jeep Patriot driven by a man accused of a carjacking in Baldwin Park was found in West Covina around 2 a.m. near Durness Street and South Sandy Hook Street October 12. The driver refused to stop for police and fled officers until crashing on northbound Glendora Avenue at Cameron Avenue, according to the West Covina Police Department. Two adults in the eastbound vehicle struck by the suspect were ejected and died at the scene. A child in the vehicle was hospitalized, West Covina Police said. Gracie Contreras, 53, and Edward Contreras, 55, were identified by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. Both were Covina residents. The 2010 Jeep Patriot was reported carjacked around 1 a.m. in Baldwin Park by a knife-wielding suspect at Hilda Solis Park, Baldwin Park Police said. West Covina Police began searching for the vehicle once officers were notified the Jeep was last seen entering the city. The California Highway Patrol Major Accident Investigation Team is investigating the crash. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor REGION - Investigators have named the truck driver killed in a crash involving three big rigs and a sedan in West Covina. Southgate man Edmundo Hernandez Beltran, 52, was identified by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. An autopsy has yet to be scheduled to determine the exact cause of death. The crash occurred around 2:50 a.m. September 26. A Honda Civic and two big rigs came to a stop in the No. 4 lane of the eastbound I-10 freeway west of Citrus Street due to a separate collision. A third big rig failed to stop and caused a chain reaction crash, according to the California Highway Patrol. The big rig driver who did not stop crashed into two stopped big rigs in front of him. The Honda Civic was then struck.
Beltran died at the scene. All eastbound lanes were shut down for hours during an investigation and cleanup. The driver who caused the collision remains hospitalized at Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center with major injuries, the CHP said. Alcohol and drugs do not appear to be factors in collision. The crash occurred on the eastbound I-10 freeway just west of Citrus Street just before 3 a.m. A big rig reportedly struck as many as three vehicles in the No. 3 lane, according to California Highway Patrol traffic logs. The victim is only described as a Hispanic man in his 40s. He was pronounced dead at 3:08 a.m., the CHP said. All eastbound lanes of the I-10 just west of Citrus will be closed for an unknown duration, the CHP said. Firefighters were called to treat an injured person possibly suffering a head injury. |
