Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor WEST COVINA - A stolen vehicle suspect was arrested Friday after fleeing officers during a brief chase. The suspect stopped outside some stores at Eastland Center, 2753 Eastland Center Dr., setting off a containment and frightening shoppers. A California Highway Patrol helicopter notified West Covina police of a LoJack signal in the area of Holt Avenue and Grand Avenue around 11:38 a.m. June 21. Officers arrived three minutes later and located the vehicle, according to Sgt. Michelle Figueroa of the West Covina Police Department. The suspect was found driving at South Barranca Street and East Virginia Avenue. He refused to stop and briefly fled officers to Eastland Center, Figueroa said. Officers, aided by a helicopter, descended on Eastland where the suspect fled.
The suspect fled near Dick’s Sporting Goods and Target where officers had guns drawn.. People inside Target communicated with family via text that they were prevented from leaving the store. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor WEST COVINA - Less than 30 customers remain without power after a driver being chased in El Monte took out a power pole and sheared a hydrant in West Covina early Tuesday. The chase was observed by California Highway Patrol officers around 3:30 a.m. as it sped east along the I-10 freeway. Before the CHP could take over the pursuit, the driver exited into West Covina, where the driver evaded officers on surface streets south of West Covina Mall, according to CHP radio traffic.
The crash occurred at West Merced Avenue and South Sunset Avenue around 3:45 a.m. Around 2,100 customers were initially without power. The pursuit driver was taken into custody. The semi appeared to be exiting the westbound I-10 freeway to Grand Avenue when it somehow fell off the freeway and crashed onto East Garvey Street around 6:30 a.m. March 7, according to the California Highway Patrol. The semi briefly caught fire, but was extinguished. Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash, but the slick roadway may have contributed, the CHP said. The driver, 54-year-old Margarita Vargas, died at the scene of the collision. West Covina Firefighters declares her dead at 3:26 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol. Vargas was identified by the Los Angeles a County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. A preliminary report indicated Vargas died of blunt force trauma, the CHP said. The CHP responded to a call at 2:56 a.m. of a wrong-way driver westbound in the No. 1 lane of the eastbound I-10 freeway. Four minutes later, callers reported a collision. It is unknown why Vargas entered the freeway the wrong way. The 30-year-old driver Vargas slammed into was apparently not injured, the CHP. The crash between a big rig, an SUV and a sedan black the No. 2, 3 and 4 lanes near Holt Avenue around 1:45 a.m. Friday. All westbound lanes were temporarily blocked while authorities and first responders arrived to treat the wounded, according to the California Highway Patrol. It was unclear how many others were injured in the collision. At least three vehicles were involved in the crash, including a large truck, which wrapped around the pole of a freeway sign on the center divider just before 6:30 a.m. All eastbound lanes and the westbound No. 1 and 2 lanes were shut down about 20 minutes later, according to the California Highway Patrol. At 6:51 a.m., the CHP requested all east and west lanes to be shutdown during the fire and cleanup. It is unclear how many people were injured in the crash. The driver, a 55-year-old Fontana man, was ejected after his 2007 Honda Civic overturned after striking the center divider on the westbound side west of Sunset Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol. The collision occurred around 11:57 p.m. One minute later, a Nissan Sentra, driven by another Fontana resident, struck the left rear of the crashed Civic in the No. 1 and 2 lanes of traffic after the driver could not avoid the collision, the CHP said. The 27-year-old driver received only minor injuries. Alcohol is not a suspected factor in the crash, the CHP said. |
