No one was injured in the crash that occurred at Valinda Avenue and Maplegrove Avenue around 5 p.m. The building’s stability was determined to be compromised, according to the West Covina Fire Department. “City of West Covina Fire Department USAR personnel assessed the building requested assistance from Los Angeles County Fire Department USAR 103 who then built and placed a long term shoring system,” according to the West Covina Fire Department in a written statement. Suspects Flee Police, Crash after Allegedly Trying to Steal Tailgate in West Covina June 86/16/2022 Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor WEST COVINA – Two men were arrested, accused of attempting to steal a tailgate from a Toyota pickup truck June 8, the West Covina Police Department said.
Arrested were Anthony Yuban Venegas, 26, and James Michael Aguirre, 31. Venegas was arrested and booked on suspicion of felony reckless evading, attempted grand theft and receiving stolen property. Aguirre was booked on suspicion of attempted grand theft and grand theft, according to Los Angeles County Superior Court records. Two suspects were spotted around 1:44 a.m. in the area of Cameron Avenue and Lark Ellen Avenue by a patrol officer. The men fled into a vehicle and led officers on a brief pursuit along surface streets until crashing into some shrubbery in City of Industry, according to Alexus Napoles, community relations officer with the West Covina Police Department. Both suspects, later identified as Venegas and Aguirre, fled the crash, but officers found them and arrested them. Officers discovered a tailgate taken from somewhere else, tucked inside the crashed vehicle, according to the West Covina Police Department. “Both suspects were also wanted out of Orange County and had felony warrants for their arrest,” according to the West Covina Police Department. Venegas is being held without bail. His next scheduled appearance in the West Covina courthouse is June 21, according to Los Angeles County booking records. Aguirre is being held in lieu of $65,000 bail. He is scheduled to be arraigned at the West Covina courthouse September 8, according to Los Angeles County booking records. As many as two vehicles were involved in the crash that was reported just after midnight. One vehicle was allegedly being driven in excess of 100 miles per hour before crashing, according to California Highway Patrol radio traffic. As officers arrived on scene to the crash, they observed one vehicle already fully-engulfed in flames, according to the California Highway Patrol. One caller reported hearing the crash from their residence. Caltrans is en route to set up a closure. The collision occurred near South Nogales Avenue and Amanda Avenue around 3:35 a.m. Firefighters arrived and found the driver trapped inside the burning vehicle. The fire was extinguished and the driver, the only occupant, was declared dead at the scene, according to the West Covina Fire Department. The driver died at the scene of the crash at South Nogales Street and Amanda Street. Authorities were called to the scene around 3:35 a.m., according to the West Covina Police Department. Only one vehicle was reportedly involved in the crash and the unidentified driver was the sole occupant, according to the West Covina Police Department. The collision occurred in eastbound lanes of Valley Boulevard east of South Sentous Avenue January 15 around 5:58 a.m. The driver remained at the scene, according to Lt. Tim Rodgers of the West Covina Police Department. A statement was issued just after 8 a.m. Police asked drivers to avoid the area Valley Boulevard and South Sentous Avenue during the investigation. As the morning progressed, all lanes were opened with the exception of one eastbound lane. The pedestrian’s identity will be revealed once the next of kin have been notified. All eastbound lanes at the Holt Avenue on ramp are closed for three to four hours for an investigation, according to the California Highway Patrol. It appears a CHP officer spoke to a pedestrian on the west I-10 freeway near Holt Avenue around 5:47 a.m. The pedestrian allegedly said someone as trying to kill him. The pedestrian, only described as a male with tattoos then ran across traffic lanes to the center divider, according to the California Highway Patrol. The pedestrian was first hit by a vehicle’s side mirror as the pedestrian walked against traffic along the middle lanes of the freeway as he attempted to flag down drivers, according to the CHP. Around 6:04 a.m. came in the first report of the pedestrian possibly down in traffic lanes just west of Via Verde in the No. 3 and 4 lanes. By 6:19 a.m., CHP officers were requesting a hard closure of eastbound lanes. Officers responded to 3033 E. Valley Blvd. around 5:23 a.m. November 3 and found a vehicle struck a wall. The only occupant inside the vehicle was declared dead at the scene, according to Lt. Tony Cortina of the West Covina Police Department. West Covina Police traffic investigators are on scene determining the cause. It is not yet publicly clear how or why the collision occurred. Teen Driver Facing Vehicular Manslaughter, Other Charges in Fatal Collision with Juvenile Pedestrian8/30/2021 Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor WEST COVINA - A 17-year-old driver was located hours after allegedly striking and killing a juvenile at a West Covina intersection Sunday night, police said.
The teen driver was found hours after the collision occurred. Officers were able to determine the identity of the suspect, found him later during a traffic stop and took him into custody, according to Sgt. Eric Street of the West Covina Police Department. Police were called to the scene at 7:36 p.m. August 29. The juvenile girl died at the scene. The teen driver was suspected of DUI, but Street did not know if the teen was under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The juvenile girl was struck on Azusa Avenue at Fairgrove. The teen driver fled the scene after the crash, Street told SGV CityWatch. The teen driver is still in police custody, and was booked on suspicion of DUI resulting in bodily injury, gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and hit and run resulting in death. The unidentified rider who was traveling in excess of 100 miles per hour refused to stop for CHP officers conducting a construction crew protection operation on the I-10 freeway in the Pomona area around 1 a.m. August 18, according to Officer Rodrigo Jimenez of the California Highway Patrol. The rider sped past the CHP from the I-10 westbound near Kellogg Drive. Officers caught up to the rider near Azusa Avenue. The rider entered surface streets on West Covina Parkway and fled south on Glendora Avenue when officers lost sight of him, Jimenez told SGV CityWatch. The rider reportedly ran a red light and broad-sided a Toyota Camry occupied by a 35-year-old female driver and 40-year-old male passenger in the No. 2 lane of Glendora Avenue at Merced Avenue, Jimenez told SGV CityWatch. The rider died at the scene. The driver and passenger in the Camry were taken to Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center. The CHP Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team is investigating the fatal crash. West Covina Police assisted with traffic control and the West Covina Fire Department rendered aid at the scene, Jimenez told SGV CityWatch. |
