The unidentified rider who was traveling in excess of 100 miles per hour refused to stop for CHP officers conducting a construction crew protection operation on the I-10 freeway in the Pomona area around 1 a.m. August 18, according to Officer Rodrigo Jimenez of the California Highway Patrol. The rider sped past the CHP from the I-10 westbound near Kellogg Drive. Officers caught up to the rider near Azusa Avenue. The rider entered surface streets on West Covina Parkway and fled south on Glendora Avenue when officers lost sight of him, Jimenez told SGV CityWatch. The rider reportedly ran a red light and broad-sided a Toyota Camry occupied by a 35-year-old female driver and 40-year-old male passenger in the No. 2 lane of Glendora Avenue at Merced Avenue, Jimenez told SGV CityWatch. The rider died at the scene. The driver and passenger in the Camry were taken to Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center. The CHP Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team is investigating the fatal crash. West Covina Police assisted with traffic control and the West Covina Fire Department rendered aid at the scene, Jimenez told SGV CityWatch. The teen had to be pulled from a 2007 Dodge Charger that caught fire after crashing on the westbound I-10 freeway at Walnut Grove Avenue at 12:17 a.m. He was taken to County/USC Medical Center, according to the California Highway Patrol. CHP officers from the Baldwin Park Office attempted to stop the teen, accused of driving in excess of 100 mph on the west I-10 at West Covina Parkway. During the chase, the teen reportedly reached 125 miles per hour while using all traffic lanes, the California Highway Patrol said. After the teen crashed, CHP officers from the Baldwin Park and East Los Angeles stations found him slumped over and the vehicle ignited. The unconscious teen was pulled from the car. A City News Service story listed the driver, described as an adult male, as a fatality, but Officer Peter Nicholson of the CHP Traffic Management Center told SGV CityWatch that as of 5 a.m., the teen was in critical, but stable condition. Nicholson had no information indicating that the teen had died. Kerry Welsh was reportedly struck and killed by another driver at the intersection of South Hollenbeck Street and East Vine Avenue May 29. Welsh reportedly was on her way to pick up her younger sister who was at a birthday party. Other details of the crash, such as potential cause, status of the other driver and any possible occupants and whether any arrests have been made are not immediately known. Welsh reportedly finished her first year at Loyola Marymount University after earning a full academic scholarship, according to Linda Rabitoy, who identified herself as a friend of the Welsh family. Welsh played varsity soccer all four years at Glendora High School and earned a 4.6 grade point average. A gofundme was established to help the Welsh family. A Sig Alert was issued for an unknown duration for the on ramp from Southbound Vincent Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol. The point of impact occurred just north of the on ramp. During the chase, the suspect crashed into a curb. He fled on foot and a search helped to put the suspect behind bars, according to the West Covina Police Department. A patrol officer performed a traffic stop on a driver for vehicle code violations around 1:11 a.m. in the area of South Sentous Avenue and La Puente Road November 22. Although the driver stopped, he made a u-turn and sped away before the officer could contact him, according to the West Covina Police Department. The driver crashed at Nogales Street and La Puente Road, according to Lt. Tony Cortina of the West Covina Police Department. West Covina man Dru Benitez, 22, was booked on suspicion of felony evading, Cortina told SGV CityWatch. Benitez is being held in lieu of $170,000 bail ahead of a scheduled appearance in West Covina Court Tuesday, November 24, according to Los Angeles County booking records. The collision occurred on Lark Ellen Avenue at Cameron Avenue at 5:07 p.m. Four vehicles were involved, according to Keith Freeman, acting lieutenant of the West Covina Police Department. The West Covina Police Traffic Bureau is investigating the crash. One of the drivers may have suffered a medical emergency prior to the crash, but it is still unclear what caused the collision, Freeman told SGV CityWatch. Freeman was not sure if anyone else was injured. The pedestrian, described as a transient man, may have stepped into the roadway outside of a marked crosswalk on Azusa Avenue south of Amar Road around 7:30 p.m. October 25, according to Lt. Jeff Munn of the West Covina Police Department. The vehicle was possibly southbound on Azusa Avenue when the collision occurred. The driver remained at the scene in his cooperating with investigators, Munn told SGV CityWatch. There is a social media report being shared that described the pedestrian as dying at the scene, but Munn denies any fatality resulting from the crash. The crash between two vehicles occurred some time around 11 p.m. on California Avenue north of Cameron Avenue October 11. Both vehicles were driven northbound when the fatal crash occurred, according to Lt. Jeff Munn of the West Covina Police Department. The victim died at the scene. The as-of-yet unidentified driver was caught elsewhere and taken into custody. Munn didn’t know where the suspect was found. The driver crashed while fleeing officers in the area of North Third Avenue and West Geneva Place. A female was arrested by officers at the scene, according to Lt. Jeff Munn of the West Covina Police Department. The driver was sought for an unspecified vehicle code violation at South Citrus Avenue and West Puente Street around 9 p.m. The pursuit didn’t last long before the driver crashed, Munn told SGV CityWatch. Covina officers are assisting with a search. The No. 1 lane of the eastbound off ramp remains closed. WEST COVINA – One freeway lane has opened after a crash took a life early Thursday morning. All other lanes remain closed. A body was reported in the No. 1 lane of the eastbound I-10 freeway just west of Azusa Avenue around 4:33 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol. All other lanes remain closed for an unknown duration. It is unclear which vehicle struck and killed the pedestrian. A blue sedan was observed stopped on the right shoulder of the eastbound I-10 near where the pedestrian was discovered. An additional two to three vehicles were stopped in traffic lanes and pedestrians were seen running to the body, the CHP reported. |
