Officers responded to a reported shooting in the 1200 block of South Montezuma Way just before 5:30 p.m. October 15 and found the victim with a gunshot wound to the upper torso. He died at the scene, according to Alexis Napoles, community relations officer for the West Covina Police Department. “One possible suspect was detained pending further investigation,” Napoles said. but it is unclear Saturday afternoon if any arrests have been made. The unidentified rider who was traveling in excess of 100 miles per hour refused to stop for CHP officers conducting a construction crew protection operation on the I-10 freeway in the Pomona area around 1 a.m. August 18, according to Officer Rodrigo Jimenez of the California Highway Patrol. The rider sped past the CHP from the I-10 westbound near Kellogg Drive. Officers caught up to the rider near Azusa Avenue. The rider entered surface streets on West Covina Parkway and fled south on Glendora Avenue when officers lost sight of him, Jimenez told SGV CityWatch. The rider reportedly ran a red light and broad-sided a Toyota Camry occupied by a 35-year-old female driver and 40-year-old male passenger in the No. 2 lane of Glendora Avenue at Merced Avenue, Jimenez told SGV CityWatch. The rider died at the scene. The driver and passenger in the Camry were taken to Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center. The CHP Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team is investigating the fatal crash. West Covina Police assisted with traffic control and the West Covina Fire Department rendered aid at the scene, Jimenez told SGV CityWatch. A 29-year-old woman who was the passenger of a vehicle was struck by gunfire around 10:16 p.m. at East Amar Road and South Azusa Avenue. She was transported to a local hospital and was described as being in critical condition, according to Lt. Tony Cortina of the West Covina Police Department. Cortina did not provide a possible suspect or vehicle description. According to West Covina Fire Department radio traffic, the woman may have been shot in the back of the head. Police officers were first on scene and began providing first aid. Officers believe the woman’s pulse was fading, but firefighters arrived, took over patient care and were able to stabilize the woman for transport to a hospital. An unresponsive man was found in the area of Sunset Avenue and Vine December 17. Police were called to the scene around 12:36 p.m. to a man laying face down. Firefighters declared the man dead at the scene, according to Lt. Keith Freeman of the West Covina Police Department. “Obviously, it’s still under investigation, But at this time it appears to be no obvious signs of foul play,” Freeman told SGV CityWatch. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor WEST COVINA - An accused reckless driver refused to stop for police and led them on a chase Saturday night. The suspect rammed a West Covina Police car during the chase into La Puente where the driver crashed through a fence at Baldwin Academy, 1616 Griffith Ave., according to the West Covina Police Department. Officers attempted to stop the driver, David Torres, around 11 p.m. April 11 at West Covina Parkway and Vincent Avenue, West Covina Police said.
After crashing at Baldwin Academy, Torres fled and hid away in a trash can. An El Monte Police helicopter and containment search helped find Torres, West Covina Police said. A passenger, identified as Maria Garcia, remained in the crashed car and was arrested. The fire burned in the 700 block of North Broadmoor Avenue around 1:30 a.m. Both victims were described as a white man and woman. Both victims were found dead at the scene, according to Deputy Eric Ortiz of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau. It was unclear if there was anyone else injured in the fire. Firefighters were in contact with arson investigators with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, according to West Covina Fire Department radio traffic. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau is investigating. Callers reported the fire near Big League Dreams Sports Park, 2100 S. Azusa Ave., around 3:25 p.m. February 15. The fire was extinguished relatively quickly, according to Lt. Keith Shishido of the West Covina Police Department. No one was injured. The fire burned behind Tiger Stadium at the complex. Shishido did not know the origin of the fire or if it could have been intentionally set. It [Arson] is a possibility and they are looking it, but as of right now it’s not confirmed,” Shishido told SGV CityWatch. The fire interrupted at least one game. Video shared through social media showed softball players standing idle at the sports complex as West Covina Fire trucks positioned themselves to protect lives and property as thick black smoke rose in the distance. No damage to any structure was reported. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor WEST COVINA - A domestic violence suspect will also be booked on suspicion of attempted arson and attempted murder of a police officer after allegedly attacking a female inside a home and throwing gasoline and ignited objects at police. Nicholas Isidro Misquez, 48, kept police and SWAT officers at bay for 10 hours and 34 minutes, according to Cpl. Rudy Lopez of the West Covina Police Department. The incident unfolded around 12:10 a.m. January 3 after a man called the West Covina Police Department to report a disturbance in his residence. Officers arrived to the 1300 block of West Bainbridge Avenue and found an injured woman, Lopez said. Officers learned the suspect barricaded himself in the attic after attempts to speak with him failed. “When officers approached the area of the attic, the suspect opened the attic door and began pouring gasoline out, striking the officers and then threw ignited items at them,” Lopez said in a written statement.
Several residents near the scene were evacuated. Officers deployed chemical agents into the attic after the suspect refused to speak with police. The suspect broke through the attic and climbed onto the roof, Lopez said. At 10:44 a.m. the suspect surrendered. Misquez was taken to a mental health facility for an evaluation and upon release he will be booked on suspicion of domestic violence, attempted arson and attempted murder of a police officer. he also has several outstanding warrants. Officers found the victims after arriving to a report of gunfire in the 1100 block of East Larkwood Street around 9:13 p.m., West Covina Police said. A man was critically wounded. A woman received injuries considered not life-threatening, West Covina Police said. “Detectives are currently investigating the incident as a homicide,” West Covina Police said in a written statement. The crash occurred on the eastbound I-10 freeway just west of Citrus Street just before 3 a.m. A big rig reportedly struck as many as three vehicles in the No. 3 lane, according to California Highway Patrol traffic logs. The victim is only described as a Hispanic man in his 40s. He was pronounced dead at 3:08 a.m., the CHP said. All eastbound lanes of the I-10 just west of Citrus will be closed for an unknown duration, the CHP said. Firefighters were called to treat an injured person possibly suffering a head injury. |
