Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor MONTEREY PARK - Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna has identified the Monterey Park mass shooter as the same man who attempted a shooting in Alhambra and who was found dead inside of a white work van during a traffic stop in Torrance.
Huu Can Tran, 72, was driving in Torrance near the intersection of Sepulveda Boulevard and Hawthorne Boulevard Sunday morning. Torrance police officers initiated a traffic stop after identifying the van around 10:20 a.m. As officers attempted to approach, a single gunshot was heard, Luna said Sunday afternoon. After a tactical response was initiated to prevent the van from being driven away, Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Bureau deputies opened the van and found the suspect dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound around 12:52 p.m. Authorities, do not believe there are any outstanding suspects. Investigators recovered several pieces of evidence they said linked Tran to the Alhambra shooting. A weapon was also recovered from the van. Seven victims remain hospitalized. None of the dead have been publicly identified yet. |
