La Puente man Luis Mendoza, 35, was identified by the California Highway Patrol. Mendoza was driving a white Chevrolet Avalanche east on the 60 freeway east of Crossroads Parkway just before 12:30 p.m. July 3. According to witnesses, the right front passenger of a silver or gray compact apparently opened fire, striking Mendoza and his truck. Mendoza lost control of his Chevrolet Avalanche, hit a white Kia and then crashed into the right shoulder retaining wall, the CHP said. Mendoza and the two teenagers, 13 and 16 years old, were taken to County USC/Medical Center for treatment. Mendoza died there, the CHP said. The 13-year-old suffered major head injuries. The 16-year-old suffered injuries considered not life-threatening. The mechanism of their injuries was not immediately known, the CHP said. The Kia’s driver was uninjured. Deputies were reportedly responding to a burglary alarm call at the Hacienda Heights Community Center, 1234 Valencia Ave., around 10:13 p.m. when they discovered the victim of the shooting down on the west side of the property, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department radio traffic. The victim was struck by 9-millimeter rounds, possibly from a semi automatic handgun, according to a deputy at the scene. Sheriff’s homicide investigators only identified the victim as a male adult. Deputies described the man as being from an area street gang, but it is unclear how they identified him as such. The victim was taken to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau. Nelson Fermin Garibay, 44, was found and arrested in Otay January 21. He was transported to the Sheriff’s Industry Station for booking, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office filed two counts of murder and one count of attempted murder. Garibay is being held without bail, Sheriff’s deputies said. Deputies responded to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon January 11 in the 14400 block of Marwood Street in Hacienda Heights. They found a wounded man claiming his brother assaulted him. Deputies entered the home and found a deceased 73-year-old man and 65-year-old woman, Sheriff’s deputies said. Suspect’s mother and stepfather died at the scene. The wounded brother was hospitalized for injuries considered not life-threatening. The attack occurred around 12:30 p.m. Garibay had a scheduled appearance in the Pomona Courthouse Monday. Both stepfather and mother were declared dead at the scene. The 37-year-old brother was hospitalized for injuries considered not life-threatening. Garibay fled in a green 2001 Toyota 4Runner featuring license plate 4RHH063. Garibay is 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighs 180 pounds. He is considered armed and dangerous. Deputies with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Industry Station responding to a gunfire call around 12:38 a.m. were soon told of a man down. Deputies found him laying on the side of the road, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau. The man was found on Turnbull Canyon Road south of Northview Terrace.
The victim, only described as a Hispanic man in his 20s, died at the scene from an apparent gunshot wound to the upper torso. There is apparently no suspect information available. A 33-year-old victim was found dead by deputies responding to a gunshot victim call in the 15300 block of Manzanita Drive just after 1:33 a.m. September 9. Two women in their 20s were shot at -- one sustained a gunshot wound to the upper torso, the other sustained injures not directly from gunfire, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau. All three victims were believed to be leaving a party from nearby in the 1700 block of Vallecito Drive A suspect or suspects tied to a dark-colored vehicle opened fire on the victims, investigators said.
