Abel Alexander Ruiz died by hanging, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. Ruiz was a San Gabriel High School student and football player for the Matadors having graduated in 2022. “There are no words. Just deep sorrow. Abel was such a kind person. He was the kid who stayed after to pick up. The kid who stayed late for extra reps. He was the best teammate. I’m so heartbroken,” according to San Gabriel High School Varsity Football Head Coach Kevin Encinas in a social media post. “If you knew Abel he was an incredibly smart boy with the sweetest attitude who always put others before himself. He touched the hearts of those around him. He was like a son/little brother to everyone he met,” according to Sasha Ruiz on Abel’s gofundme fundraiser. First responders were called to the pedestrian bridge east of New Avenue just before 11 a.m. Sunday, March 19. Firefighters reported a body hanging from the bridge and within minutes stated the operation would be a body retrieval, according to San Gabriel Fire Department radio traffic. Officer Moises Marroquin of the California Highway Patrol Traffic Management Center told SGV CityWatch that a Sig Alert in effect was due to a hanging on the pedestrian bridge. at 12:11 p.m., the CHP stated the eastbound express lanes off ramp to New Avenue and the westbound express onramp will continue to be blocked. the westbound I-10 mainline has been reopened. SAN GABRIEL - Surrounding residents have been evacuated in a San Gabriel neighborhood Wednesday after a woman reportedly barricaded herself with a weapon inside the house. The incident is unfolding in the 100 block of East Broadway and began just before 9:30 a.m. October 19, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Deputies with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Bureau have assumed command of the operation and crisis negotiators are attempting to get the woman to peacefully surrender. It is not immediately clear what led up to the woman to barricade herself inside the house. The threat, which has since been taken down, was described by the Alhambra Police Department as vague and is is believed to not be credible. The man was found with a gunshot wound to the upper torso, according to the San Gabriel Police Department. In a statement shared July 21, the man was listed in critical, but stable condition. “Based on preliminary information, we believe that the victim was possibly targeted by one unknown suspect and that there is no ongoing threat to public safety,” according to the San Gabriel Police Department in a written statement. The suspect was described as a bald white man driving a blue or grey Toyota Camry. An Asian female reportedly was his passenger. San Gabriel Police officers located the dead man in the 1400 block of Prospect Avenue after responding to a gunfire call around 8:10 p.m. January 26. He was shot in the upper torso, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau. “Officers learned a second male Asian adult with a gunshot wound, was transported to a nearby hospital. Officers believe both victims are related to the same shooting incident. The second victim is being treated for non-life threatening injuries,” according to the the Sheriff’s Information Bureau in a written statement. Allan Gerhard Lohman, 18, and an unidentified juvenile were tracked to East Los Angeles January 20 and arrested around 5 p.m., according to the San Gabriel Police Department. “One suspect, a juvenile who was in possession of a loaded firearm at the time of his arrest, is being charged with attempted murder and weapons violations,” according to the San Gabriel Police Department in a written statement. Lohman was also booked on suspicion of attempted murder in the shooting of a teen January 13. The shooting took place in the 800 block of East Grand Avenue around 11:47 a.m. It is not publicly clear if a motive has been determined. The checkpoint is scheduled to take place from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. Saturday, December 18. It will take place at an undisclosed location, but the location is usually chosen based on historical DUI crashes and arrests, according to the San Gabriel Police Department. “The primary purpose of checkpoints is not to make arrests, but to promote public safety by deterring drivers from driving impaired,” according to the San Gabriel Police Department in a written statement. Driving under the influence does not just involve alcohol and marijuana. Certain prescription and over the counter medication can impair driving. Drivers charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license, according to the San Gabriel Police Department.
