Abel Alexander Ruiz died by hanging, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. Ruiz was a San Gabriel High School student and football player for the Matadors having graduated in 2022. “There are no words. Just deep sorrow. Abel was such a kind person. He was the kid who stayed after to pick up. The kid who stayed late for extra reps. He was the best teammate. I’m so heartbroken,” according to San Gabriel High School Varsity Football Head Coach Kevin Encinas in a social media post. “If you knew Abel he was an incredibly smart boy with the sweetest attitude who always put others before himself. He touched the hearts of those around him. He was like a son/little brother to everyone he met,” according to Sasha Ruiz on Abel’s gofundme fundraiser. Abel leaves behind his mother, brother and three sisters. First responders were called to the pedestrian bridge east of New Avenue just before 11 a.m. Sunday, March 19. Firefighters reported a body hanging from the bridge and within minutes stated the operation would be a body retrieval, according to San Gabriel Fire Department radio traffic. Officer Moises Marroquin of the California Highway Patrol Traffic Management Center told SGV CityWatch that a Sig Alert in effect was due to a hanging on the pedestrian bridge. at 12:11 p.m., the CHP stated the eastbound express lanes off ramp to New Avenue and the westbound express onramp will continue to be blocked. the westbound I-10 mainline has been reopened. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor SAN GABRIEL - Police arrested the driver of a reported stolen green Honda CRV after the driver led them on a pursuit into West Covina Wednesday morning.
The exact circumstances of how police located the vehicle, where and when they tried a traffic stop are not publicly known. Multiple calls and messages to a San Gabriel Police supervisor went unanswered, but the California Highway Patrol was notified of the pursuit around 3:25 a.m. December 30. A police helicopter notified the CHP East LA Office of the chase as it progressed east on the I-10 freeway east of the 710 freeway, according to CHP radio traffic. The pursuit endured as it headed into the West Covina area, with three San Gabriel Police units following, until the driver exited at Citrus Avenue. The pursuit ended somewhere on Hillside Drive in West Covina with the driver in custody. There may possibly have been one other person detained, according to CHP. It is not publicly known where and when the Honda CRV was stolen. A Sig Alert was issued at 11:27 a.m. The HOV and No. 1 lane are blocked for 30 minutes after all lanes were initially closed. CHP Officers were called to the area of a pedestrian in traffic lanes at 11:17 a.m. “A pedestrian was running in lanes, hitting other vehicles,” according to Officer Peter Nicholson of the California Highway Patrol Traffic Management Center. While Nicholson was unable to confirm details yet, the pedestrian was armed with a weapon, according to CHP radio traffic. The pedestrian, initially thought to be armed with gun, was found carrying a tire iron. The pedestrian was somehow injured and went into cardiac arrest. He was taken to an area hospital and his condition is unknown. Firefighters were dispatched to a reported two-to-three-vehicle collision an the east I-10 west of San Gabriel Boulevard at 11:21 a.m. One person at the scene was treated after going into cardiac arrest, according to Dispatch Supervisor Cheryl Sims of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The vehicle associated with the pedestrian was reported stolen out of Huntington Park. Two men carjacked a driver. The location of the second suspect is unknown, according to CHP radio traffic. |
