Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor CHARTER OAK - A motorcycle officer reportedly with the Azusa Police Department is awake after striking a bicyclist on Cienega Avenue near Sunflower Avenue Monday night.
At 9:45 p.m., CHP officers at the scene were notified by dispatch that the bicyclist hit by the motor officer is dead. Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies, Azusa Police, Glendora Police and the California Highway Patrol all responded to the scene just after 9 p.m. A call to the California Highway Patrol Traffic Management Center did not yield very much information. The CHP is trying to confirm if the collision happened in their jurisdiction, according to Officer Elizabeth Kravig. The intersection of Cienega Avenue and Sunflower Avenue is within the county jurisdiction, which would put all traffic collisions under the jurisdiction of the CHP. A 57-year-old Covina man died at the scene in the 4200 block of Sunflower Avenue August 2 after crashing head on into a cinder block wall and metal gate, according to the California Highway Patrol in a written statement. The crash occurred around 11:05 p.m. The unidentified driver was southbound on Sunflower and crashed at the dead end. The CHP had southbound and northbound lanes of Sunflower Avenue closed until 3:40 a.m. The driver was pronounced dead at 11:26 p.m. A pending examination will determine cause of death, according to Sarah Ardalani, public information officer for the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. Los Angeles County firefighters responded to a report of an unconscious person at Cypress Street and North Grand Avenue at 1:14 a.m. and found the woman inside a vehicle. They declared her dead on arrival, according to a representative with the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The woman’s vehicle was parked at a car wash in the 19500 block of East Cypress Street, according to Lt. Ed Mackenzie of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s San Dimas Station. Investigators do not suspect foul play, Mackenzie told SGV CityWatch. Identification for the woman is still pending. She was only described as a Caucasian in her 50s, according to Sarah Ardalani, public information officer for the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor CHARTER OAK - A man in his 20s was subdued by deputies Friday afternoon after causing himself numerous lacerations while breaking windows at a residence, a Sheriff’s lieutenant said.
The incident occurred around 5 p.m. in the 5000 block of North Willow Avenue near East Nubia Street, June 5. Originally responding to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon occurring, deputies learned after arriving on scene that the suspect was vandalizing a home by breaking out windows, said Lt. Melikidse of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s San Dimas Station. The suspect lived at the home where the vandalism occurred, according to Lt. Ed Mackenzie of the Sheriff’s San Dimas Station. “He was having some kind of medical episode. We’re not exactly sure what,” Mackenzie told SGV CityWatch. Three deputies were injured while detaining the suspect. One deputy received an abrasion to one of his knuckles, another deputy received a calf injury — both of those deputies declined medical treatment. Another deputy was checked out at a hospital, Mackenzie told SGV CityWatch. The suspect received severe lacerations during the vandalism, Melikidse told SGV CityWatch. The suspect was transported by firefighters to an area trauma center for treatment, according to Dispatch Supervisor Martin Rangel of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The suspect remains hospitalized as of Saturday morning. It is unclear if the suspect will be given a mental evaluation. Charges are still pending, McKenzie told SGV CityWatch. “Once he is discharged, we will probably be taking him into custody,” Mackenzie said. The shooting unfolded at Club Pacifica Apartments, 21042 E. Arrow Hwy., around 3:10 p.m. July 17. The victim was transported to an area hospital and pronounced dead, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau. It is unclear if the victim was shot in an apartment unit, or outside. Deputies have a large area of a courtyard taped off. No other Information is available. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor CHARTER OAK - Firefighters knocked down a bedroom fire inside an apartment complex early Saturday morning. Three people were displaced in the fire, which was reported just before 2 a.m. at Covina Manor, 20420 E. Arrow Hwy., July 13. Firefighters were able to keep the fire to just the bedroom, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
No one was injured. The fire was knocked down in a little more than 20 minutes. The cause is under investigation.

CHARTER OAK - No one was injured after a vehicle burst into flames at a medical clinic Thursday.
What was described as a portable dialysis truck ignited at 21304 E. Arrow Hwy. May 16. Firefighters were called at 12:09 p.m. and arrived seven minutes later to extinguish the flames, according to a representative with the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
An ambulance was originally called, but was cancelled en route by firefighters.

CHARTER OAK - A hydrant was sheared and two people were injured in a crash on eastbound Arrow Highway Monday.
The collision occurred at 5 p.m. at eastbound Arrow Highway west of Banna Avenue in the unincorporated community of Charter Oak. Firefighters arrived six minutes later to treat those injured, according to Captain Ron Haralson of the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
The crash between a black PT Cruiser and a white sedan sent both vehicles onto the southern sidewalk where a hydrant was then sheared.
It was initially reported that four occupants were injured and that children were inside the vehicles when they crashed, but Haralson did not have definitive information on the number, or ages of the patients. At least two patients were transported to Foothill Presbyterian Hospital, according to firefighter radio traffic. Firefighters shut off the sheared hydrant just before 6 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol. The fire was reported at Covina Manor, 20420 E. Arrow Hwy., around 4:39 p.m. The fire, the cause of which is still under investigation, dispelled residents from the affected units. according to Dispatch Supervisor Bernard Peters of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Fire trucks and Los Angeles County Sheriff’s vehicles had all lanes of eastbound Arrow Highway blocked during the fire fight. Knockdown was declared around 5 p.m. and it is unclear if traffic lanes are completely open again. The American Red Cross was being called to aid the displaced residents. No injuries were reported. |
