The man was walking in the center divider of the east 210 freeway towards Highland Avenue around 11:26 a.m. He lost balance and fell backwards into the No. 1 lane and between the left rear tires of a 2014 Freightliner tractor trailer, according to the California Highway Patrol San Bernardino Office.

Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor LOS ANGELES - The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department confirmed the baby girl found dead, strapped to a carseat behind a Bellflower funeral home belongs to a missing NorCal man. Homicide detectives believe the baby, 8-month-old Alexia Rose Echeverria, died in Sacramento and because of that, the investigation is in the hands of the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department. Authorities continue to search for the missing father, 30-year-old Alexander Echeverria who was sought, along with his daughter, as a missing person. He was last seen May 24 at 10:30 p.m. in Bellflower along with Alexia.
Echeverria is driving a grey 2014 Volkswagen Jetta with California license plate 7FFT866. Echeverria is 5 feet 6 inches tall, weighs 160 pounds and has brown hair and brown eyes. Echeverria suffers from depression, authorities said. Anyone with information on Echeverria’s whereabouts is urged to call the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department at 916-874-5021. The body was found in the area of Angeles Forest Highway near mile marker 18.87. Los Angeles County firefighters and the U.S. Forest Service were called to the area around 4:47 p.m. A hiker or passerby discovered the body and called the U.S. Forest Service who then called deputies, according to Lt. Smeltzer of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Crescenta Valley Station.
The body is approximately 400 feet over the side and the Montrose Search and Rescue team is working to get the body topside, Smeltzer said. Investigators with the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau are en route to the crime scene. The age and gender of the victim are not immediately known, Smeltzer said. The infant girl was found in the 10300 block of Alondra Boulevard just before 10:40 a.m., according to Deputy Kim Alexander of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau. The infant was found behind a funeral home, according to media reports from the scene.
Homicide detectives have not yet stated if the infant appeared to have obvious signs of trauma. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor LOS ANGELES - A suspect accused of committing 24 robberies across SoCal pleaded guilty to one felony county of second-degree robbery Thursday. Michael Anthony Tapia, 52, also admitted to allegations of two prior felony convictions. He was immediately sentenced to 25 years to life in state prison, according to Paul Eakins of the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. Tapia committed the 24 robberies over a seven-month period from June 2017 to January 2018.
The felony complaint only regarding crimes committed within Los Angeles County. Tapia was accused of a total of 40 cell phone store robberies across SoCal, including cities in Orange County and San Bernardino County. Tapia was convicted of second-degree robbery in 1998 and attempted second-degree robbery in 2001. “Under the terms of a negotiated plea agreement, the defendant waived all credit for time already served in jail and is required to pay restitution to all of the victims named in the case,” Eakins said in a written statement. The West Covina Police Department investigated Tapia, along with surrounding police agencies. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor LOS ANGELES - The FBI is offering up to $10,000 for information leading to the arrest of a man accused of gunning down his pregnant wife, an act which also killed his unborn child. Octavio Curiel-Martinez, 37, a Mexican national allegedly shot to death estranged wife Ana Maria Martinez, 37, in the home they shared in the 2700 block of Leafdale Avenue August 29, 2018. Hours prior, Curiel-Martinez allegedly shot at a family member multiple times, but failed to cause any injury. Family drove to check on Ana Maria’s well-being and found her shot, according to the FBI. DOWNLOAD THE WANTED FLYER>> Ana Maria and her unborn child were declared dead later at an area hospital.
After shooting at a family member, Curiel-Martinez fled in a red two-door 2018 Toyota Tacoma, which features a chrome utility box in the truck’s bed. The truck features California license plate number 81718L2. Curiel-Martinez may be residing somewhere in Mexico, specifically the town of Bolanos in Jalisco, the FBI said. Martinez was charged with two counts of murder, attempted murder, two counts of assault with a firearm, shooting at an inhabited dwelling or occupied car, two counts of corporal injury to spouse, assault by means likely to produce great bodily injury, two counts of felony child endangerment and six counts of misdemeanor child endangerment. The estranged couple have addition children, who were not home at the time of the shooting, investigators said. A state arrest warrant was issued September 5, 2018. A federal arrest warrant followed March 15, 2019 after Curiel-Martinez was charged with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution. Curiel-Martinez is about 5 feet 7 inches tall, weighs 190 to 204 pounds, has brown hair and brown eyes. In a ceremony in the East Wing of the White House, President Donald Trump awarded the Medal of Valor to retired Azusa lieutenant Xavier Torres, Azusa Sergeant Seth Chapman, retired Azusa sergeant Terry Smith Jr., Azusa Sergeant Thomas Avila III, Azusa Sergeant Rocky Wenrick, retired Azusa corporal Andrew Rodriguez Jr., Senior Azusa Officer Carlos Plascencia and Irwindale Detective Manuel Campos. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor LOS ANGELES - The alleged armed and armored suspect officers accused of pointing a rifle at them May 17 died by police gunfire, the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner said. Daniel Warren, 36, died as the result of gunshot wounds to the right thigh and left axilla (left underarm), according to public data released by the coroner. Pasadena police encountered Warren in a fenced yard at a home in the 1500 block of Glen Avenue after responding to a man with a gun call at 6:30 p.m. Warren allegedly yelled at officers and pointed the rifle at them. Police opened fire, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau.
Warren retreated to the rear yard of the home after taking gunfire. Officers approached the yard and found him unresponsive. Paramedics later declared him dead, homicide detectives said. A handgun and rifle equipped with a “large capacity drum-style magazine” were found near Warren who fired at least one round, homicide detectives said. The collision occurred just after 3 a.m. At least two people were standing in lanes of traffic after a semi and blue sedan collided, the latter ended in the center divider, according to California Highway Patrol traffic logs. One of the people from the crash was hit by a vehicle. He ended in the No. 3 lane with what was initially described as a broken leg the CHP was told.
The CHP issued a Sig Alert and shut down all northbound lanes for one hour. Eventually, the No. 4 lane was opened around 4:25 a.m. All northbound lanes were cleared by 4:40 a.m. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor LOS ANGELES - Coroner investigators are still determining what killed a man found dead in the San Gabriel River May 11. Joseph Duran, 40, was found in the water near Peck Road and Durfee Avenue sometime before 2:30 p.m. 10 days ago. Duran was identified by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner.
A city of residence was unavailable for Duran. The cause of death has been deferred, pending additional investigation. |
