Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor LOS ANGELES - Sheriff’s deputies, Los Angeles Police and crisis negotiators are attempting to have an accused domestic violence and kidnapping suspect peacefully surrender from inside his Prius.
The grey Prius used in the July 29 kidnapping is parked at South Hill Street and West Second Street in Downtown Los Angeles. It was found parked with a sleeping suspect inside since 2:45 a.m., authorities said. 27-year-old Robert Anthony Camou is believed to be barricaded within. “Officers attempted to make contact with the suspect, however he refused to exit the vehicle. Due to the nature of the crimes the suspect is wanted for, LAPD SWAT resources have been deployed to the scene,” according to the Los Angeles Police Department. The LAPD has hard closures along 1st Street, 2nd Street, 3rd Street and Broadway. Camou is Accused of injuring and kidnapping 31-year-old Amanda Custer. Monrovia Police we’re called to the 600 block of Vaquero Drive around 8:15 a.m. Monday and found blood at the scene. Authorities believe a domestic violence incident occurred, but do not yet know whose blood was found. Camou and Custer are or were dating and have a history of domestic violence. Custer was reportedly seen being placed into the rear hatch of the grey Prius. It is unclear if she is in tthe barricaded Prius. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor LOS ANGELES - An official cause of death has not been determined yet for a boy who was found at the bottom of a pool and later died at a hospital. Neal Gutierrez, 9, was identified by Lt. Larry Dietz of the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. The drowning was reported at a residence in the 3200 block Leticia Drive around 7:47 p.m. July 27. Gutierrez was swimming with family when he possibly went under the water after using a water slide. Family then noticed his body at the bottom of the pool, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
Family members were performing CPR on Gutierrez by the time deputies and firefighters arrived. Gutierrez was transported by ground to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to Lt. James Long of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Industry Station. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor LOS ANGELES - More than one month after police discovered his body, investigators have publicly identified a transient found dead near some railroad tracks. Christopher Bingham, 45, was identified by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. His cause of death has been deferred, pending additional investigation.
Glendora Police officers conducting homeless outreach along the tracks frequented by Burlington Northern Santa Fe trains discovered Bingham’s body June 13 near Grand Avenue and Foothill Boulevard. Police do not believe Bingham was struck by a train. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor CHINO HILLS - A brush fire has been stopped at 100 acres, but not before destroying one home Sunday. The fire was reported near Chino Hills Parkway and Falling Star Lane just before 1:24 p.m. July 28. Forward progress of the flames was stopped by both Chino Valley firefighters and Los Angeles County firefighters.
Flames stayed within Chino Hills city limits, but did encroach on the Los Angeles County line. A very large home was destroyed by the fire in the 2000 block of Miramonte Court. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor REGION - Homicide investigators announced the arrest of a female suspect implicated in the April 16 shooting death of a man in Carson. Maricela Mercado and her daughter, 15-year-old Alora Benitez, were found and deported by Mexican authorities after being detained in Chihuahua, Mexico. The two were accused of entering the country illegally, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Mercado was detained by U.S. Customs and Border protection agents upon her transfer to the Paso Norte port of entry. El Paso Police officers jailed Mercado pursuant to a warrant issued for the murder of Jeffery Appel, the Sheriff’s Department said. Benitez was taken by FBI agents and Victim/Witness advocates from the FBI.
At the time deputies issued a written statement a little after 1 p.m. July 24, Mercado was awaiting extradition to California. Benitez was waiting reunification with family. Mercado, 40, and fellow murder suspect Roman Cerratos, 39, are accused of being involved in a shooting death April 16, 2019. A victim, Appel, was found dead inside a vehicle in Carson. During the investigation, detectives believed the two suspects and Benitez fled across the border. Cerratos was found in Mexico June 14 and was extradited to waiting Sheriff’s detectives. He was subsequently booked on suspicion of murder. Luis Avalos, a 64-year-old Los Angeles man, died by accidental drowning, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner.
Los Angeles County Firefighters were called around 7:35 p.m. to Santa Fe Dam Recreational Area, 15501 Arrow Hwy., Saturday for a possible cardiac arrest victim. A life guard unit also arrived on scene. It is unclear exactly where Avalos was found in the water. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor LOS ANGELES - The suspect accused of killing a father and his 1-year-old child in an alleged DUI crash two years ago was ordered to stand trial. 26-year-old Hans T. Guloy, also known as Hans Timothy Cruz Guloy, pleaded not guilty July 17 after being order to stand trial for for a double fatal crash on the 60 freeway near Diamond Bar Boulevard November 26, 2017. Guloy faces two counts of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated as well as one count each of driving under the influence of an alcoholic beverage causing injury, driving with a .08% blood alcohol content causing injury, hit-and-run driving resulting in death or serious injury to another person and perjury by declaration, according to Ricardo Santiago of the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. The felony information includes allegations of fleeing the scene of the crime and causing great bodily injury or death to more than one victim, according to Deputy District Attorney Cindy Park.
Guloy allegedly was drunk behind the wheel when he hit a vehicle carrying 29-year-old Abraham Franco, 1-year-old Abby Franco, Abraham’s wife and their two other children. The family’s vehicle hit the divider and was struck by a second vehicle. The mother suffered serious injuries. The injuries of the other two children were not disclosed. Guloy is accused of fleeing the scene and later told authorities that his vehicle was stolen when it crashed. Guloy is being held in lieu of $750,000. He is scheduled for a pretrial hearing August 27 in Pomona Superior Court. He faces a possible maximum sentence of 22 years in state prison if convicted as charged, Santiago said. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor LOS ANGELES - The man prosecutors claim shot his neighbor July 15 during a dispute entered his plea during a July 17 arraignment. Massimo Barbagallo, 46, pleaded not guilty to one count of murder with an allegation of using a handgun to cause death, according to Ricardo Santiago of the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. Barbagallo is accused of gunning down his unarmed neighbor, 26-year-old Cristian Jonathan Alarcon.
The shooting may have been the result of a long-standing feud between the two neighbors, homicide investigators said. Barbagallo’s bail has been set at $3 million. He is scheduled to return to Alhambra Superior Court August 9. He faces a possible maximum of life in state prison if convicted as charged. Douglas Thatcher, a 58-year-old Riverside man, was named by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. Thatcher died from blunt trauma. His death was ruled accidental.
Thatcher was reportedly lane-splitting on the west 210 freeway at Hill Avenue in Pasadena July 16 when he collided with a Volkswagen Beetle in the HOV lane around 12:20 p.m. Thatcher was thrown from his ride and struck by the truck, the California Highway Patrol said. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor LOS ANGELES - A man died at Santa Fe Dam Recreational Area Saturday, a coroner lieutenant said. Firefighters responded to a possible cardiac arrest victim in the water around 7:35 p.m. at the dam, 15501 Arrow Hwy. Firefighters did not end up transporting anyone from the dam, according to Dispatch Supervisor Art Marrujo of the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
Luis Avalos, 64, was identified by Lt. Larry Dietz of the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. The cause of death has yet to be determined. An exam is pending, Dietz said. |
