The driver, Demian Aviles of Los Angeles, was northbound on San Gabriel Canyon Road in a 1990 Mazda RX7 when he lost control and crashed into a tree north of San Gabriel Dam Road at 11:56 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol. Aviles’ car went off the roadway before it slammed into the tree. Los Angeles County Firefighters arrived and declared Aviles dead at 12:23 a.m. It is unclear what caused the crash. In addition to the strangulation, 17-year-old Kelsey Meza suffered blunt head trauma, the coroner said. The mother and daughter were found slain in their apartment in the 800 block of West Colorado Boulevard around 1:30 p.m. Monrovia officers made the discovery after responding to a call of an assault that occurred there, according to Lt. Derrick Alfred of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau. An unknown caller phoned Alhambra Police about the assault. The call was then transferred to the Monrovia Police Department, which responded and found an open window. Officers entered through the window and found the females dead. Nimrod Perez Guerrero, 33, is being sought by detectives as the possible murder suspect and is considered armed and dangerous. Susie Drake, 73, and Joseph Drake, 50, were named by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner December 5. Autopsies on both victims have yet to be performed. Police and firefighters were called around 4:42 a.m. to the home in the 3900 block of Kenmore Avenue to a victim in cardiac arrest after family members inside the home made the 9-1-1 call. Police found Joseph Drake unresponsive and soon found his mother dead in a different room. There were no apparent signs of trauma on either body, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau. Brandon Browner was immediately sentenced to prison time upon entering his plea December 4. The judge also issued a 10-year protective stay-away order for his ex-girlfriend and her children, according to Paul Eakins of the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. Browner, 34, pleaded no contest to one felony count of attempted murder and two misdemeanor counts of cruelty to a child in a negotiated plea agreement, Eakins said. Browner attempted to kill his ex in front of her own children inside her La Verne home July 8 after breaking in through a window. Browner smothered his ex in a carpet after chasing her and dragging her, prosecutors said. Browner also allegedly stole a $20,000 Rolex watch in the process, according to the La Verne Police department in a written statement. La Verne Police pursued Browner into Azusa, where he surrendered on the 210 freeway at Azusa Avenue. Azusa Police Sergeant Jorge Sandoval in a previous interview said officers responded around 3:20 p.m. July 8 to assist with blocking traffic during a La Verne Police high-risk traffic stop. Officer Elizabeth Kravig of the California Highway Patrol said CHP officers also assisted with traffic control. Browner last played with the New Orleans Saints in 2015. He re-joined the Seattle Seahawks in 2016 as an off-season or practice squad member. He previously played with Seattle from 2011 to 2013. Browner first joined American football in 2005 when he signed with the Denver Broncos. He has also played for the Calgary Stampeders Canadian Football team and New England Patriots. Browner is a two-time Super Bowl Champion, winning XLVIII with the Seahawks in 2013 and winning Super Bowl XLIX in 2014 with the Patriots. Bernard Ortiz, 46, from Azusa, was identified by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. Ortiz was found by El Monte officers responding to a call of gunfire in the 11100 block of Bonwood Avenue around 10:25 p.m. Saturday. Officers found Ortiz wounded in an alleyway with a gunshot to the upper torso, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau. Ortiz died at the scene. Karina Alcaraz was identified by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. She died of blunt force trauma to the head. Her death has been ruled a homicide. According to the news site Mexico City Today, Alcaraz, originally from the Costa Grande region, was last heard from November 10. She was last known to be in Los Angeles. U.S. Forest Service workers clearing brush discovered her body 50 feet over Angeles Crest Highway at mile marker 31.1. The body was deemed a “long-term DOA” by Los Angeles County firefighters who spoke with Sheriff’s deputies at the scene around 10:30 a.m. November 17. The condition of the body made it difficult for detectives to determine gender, let alone the manner of death, according to Deputy Armando Viera Jr. of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau. A gofundme page set up in Alcaraz’s name stated she was the mother of two sons who are now in her brother’s care. The family is attempting to send the body back to Mexico for a proper burial. Peter Munoz faces one count each of murder and carrying a dirk or dagger, according to Ricardo Santiago of the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. Prosecutors reveal Munoz has a criminal history dating back more than 20 years: convicted of felonies ranging from drug charges, criminal threats and assaulting a peace officer with a firearm, Santiago said. Munoz is accused of stabbing to death 62-year-old Xuezhong Bao of Azusa November 27 aboard a westbound Gold Line train. Deputies with the Sheriff’s Transit Services Bureau, which patrols Los Angeles County Metro lines and Metrolink, received a 9-1-1 transfer call from Irwindale Police at 11:30 a.m. regarding an attack on either the platform or westbound train in Irwindale, according to Deputy Ramon Montenegro. The train continued westbound and stopped at the Duarte/City of Hope Station, where the suspect and victim were met by deputies. The suspect was detained and firefighters performed CPR on Bao, but he died at the scene. Bail is set at more than $3 million. Muñoz faces a possible maximum sentence of 86 years to life in state prison, Santiago said. |
