The fire is burning heavy brush near Shinn Road. The fire has burned at least two to three acres and is moving south southwest with a moderate rate of spread, according to the U.S. Forest Service. The fire began burning around 9:45 a.m. The Los Angeles County Fire Department and U.S. Forest Service are on scene with full brush assignments underway, including aircraft. The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department is evacuating people around Mt. baldy, the U.S. Forest Service said. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor UPDATE, 2:51 p.m.: Firefighters revised acreage several times and the Soldier Fire is now just under an acre burned, according to the U.S. Forest Service. There were no victims inside the crashed vehicle. The two occupants who climbed to the road were airlifted by a Los Angeles County Sheriff's helicopter. MOUNTAINS - A five acre brush fire has ignited along Highway 39 at mile marker 35.29, the U.S. Forest Service is reporting. The U.S. Forest Service is in scene and is requesting assistance from the Los Angeles County Fire Department and the California Highway Patrol. Firefighters believe a vehicle crashed over the side of the road and ignited the fire. Possibly two occupants from the crash found their way to the road. It is unclear if anyone else may still be in the vehicle, according to the U.S. Forest Service. An existing hand line put in place by firefighters who worked the Bobcat Fire is helping to keep flames back. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor MOUNTAINS - Firefighters are rescuing one injured occupant of a vehicle that plunged an estimated 400 feet down Angeles Crest Highway Sunday. The driver of the vehicle was declared dead at the scene of the crash one mile south of a fire station along Angeles Crest Highway, according to the California Highway Patrol. The surviving occupant is needing immediate aid, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The CHP was called to near mile marker 33.34 around 7:16 p.m. November 8. According to CHP traffic logs, an occupant of the vehicle flagged down a passerby to tell them about the crash. A Los Angeles County Fire helicopter will be taking the surviving patient. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor MOUNTAINS - The fire burning well above Duarte, now dubbed the Bobcat Fire, has scorched more than 100 acres and is rapidly moving north towards Angeles Crest Highway, according to the US Forest Service.
The Los Angeles County Fire Department is assisting the US Forest Service and has enacted a first alarm response. The fire is moving with a rapid rate of spread and is burning on both sides of the dam, according to the US Forest Service. LA County firefighters are at the damn initiating structure protection. Most, if not all, campgrounds in the surrounding area are being threatened by the fire, including the North Fork area, the East Fork area and Buckhorn Campground, in addition to the West Fork area, the US Forest Service said. The US Forest Service is requesting an additional three helicopters to supplement aircraft already on scene and six more ground crews. The Canadian-leased Super Scoopers are being requested. Firefighters are requesting that all northbound traffic along Highway 39 from the base of the mountain in Azusa to be shut down and turned back. The fire was observed by the US Forest Service just before 12:30 p.m. September 6. Forest Service firefighters are requesting mutual aid from the Los Angeles County Fire Department as well as a helicopter from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department for search and rescue operations, according to the US Forest Service. The fire is burning near the West Fork river area near Cogswell Dam, which rests well above the Duarte and Monrovia communities. There are lots of people enjoying the wilderness in the West Fork area. Earlier in the day, the US forest service was busy ticketing people illegally parked along the roadway. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor MOUNTAINS - A motorcyclist died after crashing on Highway 39 in the mountains above Azusa Sunday morning. The crash occurred just north of mile marker 23.11 around 7:26 a.m. July 26. CHP officers have closed both north and southbound lanes, according to the California Highway Patrol. All lanes of Highway 39 were closed at 8:30 a.m. and are expected to remain closed for three hours, the CHP said. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor MOUNTAINS - A person was hoisted Saturday after becoming stranded in waist-deep water in the San Gabriel River above Azusa. Firefighters and a rescue helicopter were called to the San Gabriel River one-half mile south of Morris Dam around 4:50 p.m. July 25. One person was located by firefighters, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. A Los Angeles County Fire helicopter arrived by 5 p.m. and hoisted the victim from the moving water. The person was placed on solid ground near the river and was tended to by firefighters before being released. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor MOUNTAINS - First responders have recovered a body found in the San Gabriel Dam Sunday afternoon. Deputies were called to the dam along Highway 39 near mile marker 24.43 to rescue a person in the water. The person was pronounced deceased at the scene, according to Lt. Melikidse of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s San Dimas Station. County firefighters and U.S. Forest Service firefighters were called to the scene around 12:20 p.m. for a cardiac arrest victim, but learned of a person in the water.
A Sheriff’s rescue helicopter found and hoisted the victim, Melikidse told SGV CityWatch. Dispatch Supervisor Melanie Flores of the Los Angeles County Fire Department was told that the victim is a critical missing person. The death was pronounced at 1:09 p.m., Flores told SGV CityWatch. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau was called to investigate. The body was recovered close to the scene of a deadly crash from Thursday, July 2 where a Chevy Camaro crashed through a chain link fence and became submerged in water. The passenger survived and a body, along with the car, was pulled July 4. The curfew will end at 6 a.m. Monday, June 1. Residents are asked to stay home and only to venture out to seek medical care, or to venture to an essential job, according to Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn. The curfew affects all incorporated and unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County. Foothill Transit services will end at 5:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon and resume operation at 7 a.m. Monday, according to Foothill Transit officials. After receiving very negative feedback on the hasty closure of late-night bus service in Los Angeles May 30, LA Metro will run regular its Sunday schedule until close of service at midnight, according to the Los Angeles Metropolitan Transportation Authority. For light rail service, LA Metro A Line (Blue) service will run between Del Amo and Grand/LA Trade Tech College with no service to Downtown Long Beach or Downtown Los Angeles. The E Line (Expo) will run between 26th Street/Bergamot and LA Trade Tech College/Ortho with no service to Downtown Santa Monica and Downtown Los Angeles. For the B Line and D Line (Red and Purple Line) trains skip Civic Center/Grand Park, Pershing Square and 7th/Metro. Sunday brought chaos and looting nearly on par with Saturday night’s events. Roving bands of looters have continued to attack stores in Los Angeles, Beverly Hills, Santa Monica and more. Looters were seen fleeing with bags and boxes of merchandise into waiting high-end sports cars and luxury cars. Santa Monica Place and Third Street Promenade were particularly hit hard. Some looters continue to torch businesses once broken into. Protests over the May 25 killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minnesota have devolved into looting, assault and outright destruction. Three firefighters were injured during a fire in a two-story, 2,500-square-foot home in the 600 block of Rocking Horse Road in Walnut. The fire was reported at 9:54 a.m. Two people inside the structure were removed and declared dead at the scene, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. A total of 49 firefighters knocked down flames by 10:47 a.m. The three firefighters suffered minor injuries, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. One person was displaced by the house fire. A fire was reported in a first-floor unit of a two-story apartment complex in the 1100 block of East Franklin Avenue at 10:33 a.m. Smoke was seen by firefighters several blocks away. One person died in the Pomona fire that was knocked down by 11 a.m., the Los Angeles County Fire Department said. One person was taken to a trauma center, another person was evaluated at the scene for minor injuries. |
