The body was found along Mt. Baldy road at mile marker 2.18. A hiker reportedly discovered the body inside a black vehicle, according to the California Highway Patrol. Los Angeles County Firefighters were called around 7 p.m. A firefighter called the man’s time of death at 7:23 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol. It is unclear how long the crash occurred before being discovered. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor SANTA FE SPRINGS - The driver of a newer-model, light-color sedan is still at-large after striking a motorcyclist who was ejected after hitting a guard rail in Avocado Heights Nov. 6.
The motorcyclist was on the trans road from the westbound 60 freeway to the northbound 605 freeway around 7:25 p.m. when her motorcycle struck a metal guard rail. Her body landed on the No. 5 lame of the north 605, according to the California Highway Patrol. The sedan struck the rider and the driver did not stop. The rider was identified previously as 32-year-old Candace Ostler, who was a self-described painter, illustrator, actor, singer and motorcyclist. Her latest works include 2020’s “Psycho Sister-In-Law” and 2019’s “Intolerance: No More.” The driver of the sedan was described as a middle-aged Caucasian male. A 21-year- old woman stuck inside of the vehicle was extracted, lifted into a Los Angeles County Fire helicopter and was transported to Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center for treatment, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The crash was dispatched to first responders just after 11 a.m. Easter Sunday. The vehicle may be as many as 200 feet over the side of the road, according to the California Highway Patrol. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor MOUNTAINS - Three people were injured and one needed to be pulled from a car that crashed down an embankment and overturned in the mountains above Azusa Saturday.
The occupant was estimated to have been trapped in the overturned car for as long as an hour before first responders arrived to San Gabriel Canyon Road at mile marker 20.22 around 9:19 a.m. Two other occupants were able to self-extricate, according to Los Angeles County Fire Department radio traffic. First responders found the car at least 100 feet over the side on flat terrain. A battalion chief at the scene initially requested a Hospital Emergency Response Team from County/USC Medical Center to be flown in, but the trapped occupant was freed and the HERT Team was no longer needed. The two occupants who self-extricated received minor injuries, according to firefighter radio traffic. By 10:31 a.m., the occupant was airlifted from the scene and was taken to Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center for treatment. The extent of injuries was not immediately known. Ana Miramontes, 41, was named by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. While the coroner would not release the name of the man because next of kin had not been notified, the California Highway Patrol identified him as Daniel Miramontes who is in his 40s. The fatal collision occurred on the eastbound I-10 freeway at Via Verde around 2:08 a.m. Witnesses reported seeing a black minivan rear end a white sedan, according to California Highway Patrol traffic logs. Both Ana Miramontes and Daniel Miramontes occupied the white sedan that was rear ended. They both died at the scene, according to California Highway Patrol officer Xavier Becerra. Both fatal victims were pronounced dead at the scene at 2:30 a.m., according to California Highway Patrol traffic logs. The crash initially affected the No. 2, 3 and 4 traffic lanes. CHP officers temporarily had all lanes blocked during the investigation. Eventually all lanes, except for the No. 1 lane, remained closed. A good Samaritan attempted to perform CPR on at least one person injured in the crash who was reportedly down in lanes of traffic, according to CHP traffic logs. Two others were injured in the crash: an 18-year-old man who suffered major injuries and a 16-year-old male who suffered moderate injuries were taken to Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center, according to the CHP. Initial reports from the scene indicated that one person, possibly two people, ran from the crash and into the nearby foothills. The CHP requested assistance from the air in locating a person described as a driver who fled into the foothills, according to CHP traffic logs. It is unclear if the CHP determined if someone actually ran from the crash scene. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor MOUNTAINS - Firefighters are rescuing one injured occupant of a vehicle that plunged an estimated 400 feet down Angeles Crest Highway Sunday. The driver of the vehicle was declared dead at the scene of the crash one mile south of a fire station along Angeles Crest Highway, according to the California Highway Patrol. The surviving occupant is needing immediate aid, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The CHP was called to near mile marker 33.34 around 7:16 p.m. November 8. According to CHP traffic logs, an occupant of the vehicle flagged down a passerby to tell them about the crash. A Los Angeles County Fire helicopter will be taking the surviving patient. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA - The California Highway Patrol arrested a driver September 7 after he allegedly led Claremont Police and CHP officers on a chase throughout the San Gabriel Valley.
Claremont officers initially pursued Anthony Orlando Franco, 33, who was driving in a stolen vehicle. The CHP was notified of the chase as it was west on the I-10 freeway west of Indian Hill Boulevard, according to Officer Rodrigo Jimenez of the California Highway Patrol Baldwin Park Office. CHP officers took over the pursuit of a black 2017 Kia Soul on the west 210 freeway at Grand Avenue, Jimenez told SGV CityWatch. The chase took to surface streets through Glendora, Covina, Irwindale, Pomona, La Verne, Claremont, Baldwin Park and West Covina. He also allegedly fled in opposing lanes of traffic, Jimenez told SGV CityWatch. The suspect also traversed the I-10, 210, 57, 71 and 605 freeways. The pursuit briefly reentered the 210 freeway eastbound from Sunflower Avenue in Glendora. The CHP attempted to disable the Kia Soul with the Pursuit Intervention Technique, but the vehicle kept moving and exited onto southbound San Dimas Avenue in San Dimas. While westbound in the area of Walnut Avenue and Arrow Highway, the driver reportedly struck the front of a CHP officer’s patrol vehicle, Jimenez told SGV CityWatch. The CHP canceled the chase due to the driver’s reckless nature. Claremont officers located the suspect and continued the pursuit into Pomona where the suspect abandoned the Soul and fled on foot at the American Inn & Suites, 310 E. Foothill Blvd. The Kia rolled and crashed into two parked vehicles, Jimenez told SGV CityWatch. Franco was caught shortly after running and was medically cleared before being booked at the Inmate Reception Center on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon other than a firearm, assaulting a peace officer, felony evading an officer, being in possession of a stolen vehicle and driving under the influence of drugs, Jimenez told SGV CityWatch. Franco was additionally booked for warrants related to felony evading and parole violations. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor REGION - The California Highway Patrol is asking for public assistance in locating the driver of a white 1990s Ford Ranger who struck and killed a man on the sidewalk in South San Jose Hills August 24. Nearby security video recorded the truck seen in the area of the time of the collision. The 1990s Ford Ranger likely suffered collision damage to the right headlight and possibly along the right side of the truck. The driver was hauling landscaping equipment in the bed of the truck, which featured landscaping business logos on the doors, according to the California Highway Patrol. The crash occurred at 9:44 a.m. Monday. The truck was being driven westbound on Valley Boulevard west of Giano Avenue in the right lane when the driver veered over the north sidewalk. A pedestrian was struck and left for dead on the sidewalk as the driver fled westbound on Valley Boulevard.
The pedestrian was identified as 82-year-old Ramon Reynoso of Los Angeles. Reynoso was taken to Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center where he died. The driver is believed to be a Hispanic or white man. The crash occurred just north of mile marker 23.11 around 7:26 a.m. July 26. CHP officers have closed both north and southbound lanes, according to the California Highway Patrol. All lanes of Highway 39 were closed at 8:30 a.m. and are expected to remain closed for three hours, the CHP said. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor REGION - Authorities named the man who was recovered in a submerged vehicle that plunged over a mountain road. Abraham Tapia Jr., a 26-year-old Azusa man, was identified by Investigator Nani Cholakians of the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. Tapia was in a vehicle that veered off of Highway 39, down the mountainside and into the San Gabriel Dam July 2. The Chevy Camaro crashed through a chain link fence and became submerged in the water around 10:20 p.m. A passenger, 26-year-old Azusa man Andres Peralta, freed himself, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Peralta was taken to Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center. The driver of the vehicle was nowhere to be found, the CHP said. Rescuers searched for the vehicle and discovered its location at 4 a.m. Friday. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Bureau successfully lifted the destroyed Camaro July 4.
