A person was seen inside, said Lt. Kusayanagi of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Temple Station. The person was still being medically cleared as of 12:44 p.m., many hours after being hospitalized for smoke inhalation. While deputies believe the person was committing a crime, a motive is still unknown, Kusayanagi said. Arriving deputies could not gain access to the building after discovering a gate was likely chained or locked after the suspect went inside, Kusayanagi said.

Once the suspect was secured, firefighters knocked the flames down by 3:27 a.m. There is much smoke damage inside the restaurant, making it difficult to determine what the suspect was doing inside, Kusayanagi said.
