The female student was found on the ground near a stairwell on the University of La Verne campus around 2:40 p.m. May 28. The female student said she was assaulted by a man wearing a ski mask, according to La Verne Police. La Verne firefighters arrived, but the female student declined treatment.
In March, a student’s vehicle parked near a university dormitory was found with a backpack emitting smoke, which students believe was a racist attack. A day prior, the victim reported receiving racist threats on social media. The threats are still being investigated, La Verne Police said. “The La Verne Police Department and University of La Verne staff is working in conjunction to maintain a safe environment for all students,” La Verne Police said in a written statement. “Students are encouraged to be aware of their surroundings and to contact the La Verne Police Department if they see any unusual activity on or near campus.” Email Newsletter! | Advertise! | Donate! Written By AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor LA VERNE - A pedestrian was struck and killed by an eastbound Metrolink train Saturday afternoon. Metrolink train 362 headed for downtown San Bernardino struck the pedestrian near San Dimas Canyon Road south of Arrow Highway around 1 p.m. La Verne Police received a call of the collision at 1:02 p.m., according to Cpl. Erin Hess of the La Verne Police Department. A representative with the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner arrived on scene around 3 p.m.
With the coroner on scene, the train will soon be moving to its destination, Hess said. The body rests several hundred feet west of San Dimas Canyon Road. Near the body, a small memorial consisting of a blue balloon, an orange balloon and a white cross is erected. The memorial is from a previous train versus pedestrian death, Hess said. Whether Saturday’s death and the memorial are connected is unknown. No other injuries have been reported. A student’s vehicle was set ablaze in a dormitory parking lot Friday morning, according to the La Verne Police Department -- this just on day after a student reported a social media threat. Remaining classes were cancelled at Noon Friday, campus administrators said. Arson investigators from the Los Angeles County Fire Department are assisting with the vehicle fire investigation. “Over the past two days, the University of La Verne has received two reports of heinous acts targeted at members of our student body,” campus administrators said in a statement on the University of La Verne website. “These actions are despicable and are an affront to our values as a university. The crash was reported just before Noon. The crash caused a small fire which was extinguished by La Verne Firefighters, who were assisted by Los Angeles County Firefighters. There has been no official word on the extent of injuries, but according to footage broadcast by KTLA 5 news, a blue tarp was placed over the cockpit of the crashed plane. No further information is available. It is unclear what extent of injuries were sustained, but a Los Angeles County Fire battalion chief reported one possible death at the scene, according to Los Angeles County Fire radio traffic. The crash was dispatched around 5:47 p.m. at 1600 Puddingstone Dr. at 5:47 p.m. Los Angeles County Firefighters were called to assist La Verne Firefighters, according to Dispatch Supervisor Cheryl Sims of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. It was unclear if the plane crashed while in flight, or if the plane was taxying on a runway or even at the airport at all. A representative from Brackett Field was unavailable to provide details. A La Verne Police supervisor was not available to answer calls for information. Contact with a La Verne Fire Department dispatcher or representative was unsuccessful. The HOV, No. 1 and 2 lanes of the westbound 210 at Foothill are blocked until about 6:40 p.m. A maroon Chevy Silverado overturned after colliding with a Toyota Camry around 5:49 p.m., according to California Highway Patrol traffic logs. There may be up to eight patients needing aid, according to Los Angeles County Fire Department radio traffic. |
