Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor WEST COVINA - Like something out of an action movie, a stolen vehicle suspect burned rubber in and out of surface streets and freeways before coming to a spectacular end Tuesday.
The vehicle involved was reported stolen in Upland. At 4 p.m., Upland PD informed La Verne Police of the stolen ride’s location at Williams Avenue and Foothill Boulevard. The vehicle was intercepted, but the driver refused to stop, according to the La Verne Police Department. The chase took to the west I-10 freeway where a female passenger attempted to flee while the stolen ride was in motion, but she was pulled back in by the driver, according to the La Verne Police Department. The passenger was eventually freed from the stolen vehicle, which slowed enough for her to escape, according to the La Verne Police Department. The pursuit continued in and off the I-10 freeway until the driver clipped the front end of another vehicle at South Barranca Street and East Garvey Avenue North and overturned. The driver, who remains publicly unidentified, received injuries considered not life-threatening. The suspect was booked on suspicion of felony evading, domestic violence and false imprisonment, according to the La Verne Police Department. A Covina officer attempted to stop the driver of a black Audi around 12:30 a.m. in the 1300 block of North Grand Avenue. The driver refused to stop and led officers on a chase along Cienega Avenue east to northbound Glendora Avenue and then east along Arrow Highway all the way into La Verne, according to Lt. Zavala of the Covina police Department. The driver crashed into a computer business at 2100 Arrow Highway where he and his two passengers fled as the Audi caught fire. Officers were able to catch only two of the suspects, Zavala told SGV CityWatch. Officers discovered and seized M30 pills: OxyContin laced with Fentanyl, Zavala told SGV CityWatch. Gabriel Morales, a 20-year-old Huntington Park man, and Adrian Paredes, a resident of Maywood, were arrested. Morales is being held in lieu of $75,000 bail. Paredes was held for detention only and released February 14, County booking records show. Morales appeared in court February 15 and pleaded not guilty to one count of reckless evading a peace officer and to one count of hit and run causing property damage. An officer attempted to stop a suspicious driver in the area of Baseline Road and Esperanza Driver. The driver fled to the 210 freeway and reached speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour, forcing the officer to cancel the chase, according to the La Verne Police Department. The suspect was last seen exiting at San Dimas Avenue where a backpack was found and recovered, according to the La Verne Police Department. “Officers retrieved the property which turned out to be property stolen during a home burglary in Corona just prior to their visit to La Verne. The property was returned to the victim, who advised a firearm was also stolen,” according to the La Verne Police Department in a written statement. Officers returned to where the backpack was found and located the loaded gun. Raul Munoz Jr., 62, was identified by the abuse victim who claimed that he sexually assaulted her over a period of six years beginning when she was 8, according to the La Verne Police Department. Munoz, a La Verne resident, was known to the victim. The investigation began June 10, 2020 in the 1000 block of Baseline Road. After investigating, the case was presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, which filed charges, including continual sexual abuse of a child and lewd acts upon a child, La Verne Police said. A felony warrant was issued for Munoz’s arrest. During the pursuit, CHP officers received information that Munoz was potentially armed and possibly suicidal, according to Rodrigo Jimenez, public information officer for the California Highway Patrol Baldwin Park Office. “The vehicle entered a private parking lot (southeast corner of Grand Avenue and Baker Parkway) and, for unknown reason, the vehicle traveled directly into a steel shipping container at a high rate of speed,” Jimenez said in a written statement. Officers gave verbal commands for Munoz to surrender, but they did not receive an answer. When they approached the vehicle, they discovered Munoz was dead. Munoz’s suicide was the result of blunt force injuries, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. It is not immediately clear if the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s pursuit was related to the sex abuse case. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor LA VERNE - Suspects were seen on Ring security footage burglarizing a home January 25 and the resident’s quick reaction led to some arrests, police said.
The burglary occurred just before 6 p.m. in the 6900 block of Wheeler Avenue. Two of the suspects were seen removing property. Police arrived and witnessed three men leaving the home. One of the suspects fled officers. Two were detained at gunpoint, according to the La Verne Police Department. A suspect in a waiting white 4-door sedan fled the scene southbound on Wheeler, setting off a police pursuit which was soon cancelled due to excessive speeds, La Verne Police said. A West Covina police canine assisted along with a Los Angeles county sheriffs helicopter to search for the suspect who fled on foot from the home. Unfortunately, the suspect was not located. Jaylen Lacy, 19, from Los Angeles, was booked on suspicion of burglary. He was held in lieu of $50,000 bail. The second suspect, a 17-year-old, was also booked on suspicion of burglary and was held at Central Juvenile Hall in Los Angeles. All the stolen property was recovered and returned to the victim, La Verne Police said. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor LA VERNE - Police were pursuing the driver of a red Acura Integra who failed to yield and eventually crashed into a second car Thursday night, Police said. The crash killed the driver of the Integra and the driver of a black Toyota Corolla at the intersection of White Avenue and College Lane. Two passengers in the Integra and one in the Corolla are still hospitalized in critical condition, the La Verne Police Department said. La Verne Police attempted a traffic stop on the Integra’s driver who ran a stop sign at White Avenue and Arrow Highway around 8:50 p.m. August 29.
The Corolla’s driver has been identified by La Verne Police as 68-year-old Marlet Reyes of La Verne. The suspect driver has not yet been identified. The California Highway Patrol Major Accident Investigation Team is investigating the crash. Jose Padilla, 22, was found in a shed after fleeing through yards in the 1200 block of Baseline Road. Padilla, the driver, fled the vehicle officers were pursuing after driving into a cul-de-sac on Derby Drive, according to La Verne Police. Padilla’s passenger, 20-year-old Jacob Murakami was immediately arrested after the chase ended and was found possessing a loaded handgun, La Verne Police said.
The pursuit began at 11 a.m. A Sheriff’s helicopter was called in to assist a K9 search. The Claremont K9 subdued Padilla, who suffered moderate injuries to his left arm, La Verne Police said. Both suspect were booked on suspicion of vehicle theft. Padilla was additionally booked for a no-bail warrant and was also on Post Release Community Supervision. The man, later identified as Washington, fled officers and a chase began, La Verne Police said.
Washington came to an abrupt stop, after driving through red lights and stop signs, at Puddingstone Drive near Brackett Field Airport. The suspect exited his vehicle and immediately began fighting with officers, La Verne Police said. “While attempting to detain the suspect, one of our Officers sustained a serious injury,” La Verne Police said. The injured officer was hospitalized at Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center. While being booked in the La Verne jail, Washington assaulted the jail staff, La Verne Police said. “Washington, who was unharmed during this incident, is on active PRCS and on probation for 69 PC (Resisting an Executive Officer),” La Verne Police said. Washington was booked on suspicion of vehicle theft, attempted robbery, criminal threats, vandalism, felony evading, resisting and battery on a custodial officer. Washington has already made an appearance in Pomona Superior Court. The suspect, 23-year-old Erik Cervantez of Chino Hills, refused to stop for officers on Westbound Arrow Highway at San Dimas Avenue around 5 p.m. Cervantez crashed near Bonita Avenue and Magnolia Avenue, according to the La Verne Police Department. The stolen SUV struck a curb and rolled over. It struck a tree as the SUV came to a rest. Cervantez was briefly hospitalized at Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center for minor injuries, but he was eventually booked on suspicion of possessing a stolen vehicle, felony evading and possession of methamphetamine. Brandon Browner, 33, faces charges of attempted murder, robbery, burglary, false imprisonment and child endangerment. The charges were filed by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office Tuesday, La Verne Police said in a written statement. Browner is expected to be arraigned in Pomona Superior Court Tuesday. Officers responded to a home July 8 after the victim reported her ex-boyfriend forced his way in through a locked window. He physically prevented the victim from fleeing the home, La Verne Police said. Browner reportedly physically harmed and threatened to kill the victim, taking a $20,000 Rolex watch in the process, La Verne Police said. A La Verne Police press release provided details of the initial call, but neglected to provide details on a reported pursuit Browner led officers on into Azusa, where he surrendered on the 210 freeway at Azusa Avenue. Azusa Police Sergeant Jorge Sandoval said officers responded around 3:20 p.m. to assist with blocking traffic during a La Verne Police high-risk traffic stop. Officer Elizabeth Kravig of the California Highway Patrol said CHP officers also assisted with traffic control. Browner last played with the New Orleans Saints in 2015. He re-joined the Seattle Seahawks in 2016 as an off-season or practice squad member. He previously played with Seattle from 2011 to 2013. Browner first joined American football in 2005 when he signed with the Denver Broncos. Browner has also played for the Calgary Stampeders Canadian Football team and New England Patriots. Browner is a two-time Super Bowl Champion, winning XLVIII with the Seahawks in 2013 and winning Super Bowl XLIX in 2014 with the Patriots. |
