The Millard Fire burned two acres in the Cobb Estate area of the Altadena foothills near Lake Avenue and East Loma Alta Drive around 5 p.m. July 27. There were no structures threatened, according to the US Forest Service. The Cobb Estate and Sam Merrill trailheads remain closed, according to the US Forest Service. Jeffrey Brown, 61, died from as of yet unknown causes. The determination of what led to his death has been deferred pending additional investigation, according to the coroner. First responders were called around Noon to a report of a man not breathing in a wash 20 yards of a hiking trail at the first hairpin turn off Pinecrest Drive, according to Lt. Ramirez of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Crescenta Valley Station. It is unclear how long Brown was dead before being discovered. Brown is assumed to be homeless, according to the coroner. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor ALTADENA - Authorities have reopened the mountain areas affected by Sunday’s Lowe Fire. The fire that burned nearly 11 acres of light to medium brush near Loma Alta Drive and Chaney Trail September 22 has been “completely extinguished,” according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department in a Wednesday night message. The U.S. Forest Service was aided by Los Angeles County Firefighters in fighting the flames, which were first reported around 3:30 p.m. Sunday. While firefighters and aircraft worked on the fire, Los Angeles County Deputies worked to evacuate patrons of Millard Trail Camp north of the brush fire.
120 personnel were assigned to the brush fire. Fire crews were said to have planned on breaking down their staging area at Millard Trail Camp with the area expected to be open by 6 a.m. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor UPDATE - 5:01 p.m.: The brush fire above Altadena has burned roughly 10 acres. The majority of the fire has been stopped, said the U.S. Forest Service. Firefighters are building containment lines to suppress remaining active flames. Millard Trail Camp, which is above the brush fire, is under mandatory evacuation, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. ALTADENA - A two-acre brush fire is burning uphill near Loma Alta Drive and Chaney Trail, Los Angeles County Firefighters report. A full brush response including four helicopters have been sent to battle the fire, which was reported around 3:26 p.m. September 22. Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies are also on scene and are working to evacuate patrons at a campground in the area of the fire. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor ALTADENA - A long-dead woman was located after reports of a foul odor coming from inside a tent Friday night. The woman was discovered near a dirt road leading to a water tank in Las Flores Canyon. There were no signs of foul play. The Altadena Mountain Rescue Team was called to locate the tent around 8:52 p.m. Friday, July 19, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau.
The cause of death is not yet known. It is unclear if the woman was transient. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor ALTADENA - The Altadena Mountain Rescue Team rescued an 11-year-old girl after she became ill due to heat exposure on the Mt. Wilson Toll Road. Rescuers were called around 11:25 a.m. to the Pinecrest Trailhead on the Mt. Wilson Toll Road Sunday, July 14. The girl was found 250 yards from the trailhead where rescuers took the Long Beach girl to an ambulance. The ambulance transported the girl, and a parent, to a nearby hospital, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Altadena Station.
Rescuers cleared the area and transported the girl on about one hour. “This family definitely learned an important lesson today. We hope everyone can learn how quickly someone can become affected by exercising or even walking in the high heat we are currently experiencing,” deputies said. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor ALTADENA - Two men from Huntington Park were led off the mountainside above Altadena after straying far off a hiking trail. The Altadena Mountain Rescue Team were dispatched to the Mt. Lowe Motorway just before 8 p.m. January 12. The hikers, both 20 and 22 years old, were able to use a cell phone to communicate with rescuers, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
The hikers were finally found -- 1000 feet from the road and 600 feet over the side of the mountain. Neither of the hikers were equipped with hiking gear or flashlights, deputies said.
Rescuers used several hundred feet of rope to assist the men who then walked out on their own. Rescuers finally left the mountain by 2:30 a.m. No one was injured. |
