Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor REGION - The Los Angeles County Department of Public health released a list Tuesday of the businesses throughout the county that have at least one person infected with COVID-19. While the list of non-residential, congregate settings is currently small, County health officials have listed the Walmart in Covina, 1275 N. Azusa Ave., as one of a handful of publicly listed businesses affected by coronavirus. Eight confirmed persons have been identified as being affected at the store, according to county health officials. While the number of people infected with coronavirus continues to climb on a daily basis, the increased numbers come as a result of rapidly-expanded testing county wide.

Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor LOS ANGELES - The 52-year-old detainee questioned in the shooting death of an 83-year-old man was arrested and booked on suspicion of murder. John McHugh, a Temple City man, is accused of shooting his father, said Trina Schrader of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau. The father, Michael Patrick McHugh, was identified by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner.
The shooting occurred in the 4900 block of Halifax Road just after 3 p.m. April 24. Deputies responding to the gunshot victim call found Michael McHugh suffering from a wound to the upper torso. He died at the scene, investigators said. John McHugh was detained at the scene. Booking records show McHugh was arrested at 4:30 p.m. April 24. He is being held at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles in lieu of $2.03 million bail ahead of a scheduled appearance in Alhambra Superior Court April 28. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor MOUNTAINS - One person was killed Friday after a white BMW slammed into a gate on San Gabriel Canyon Road north of Morris Reservoir in the San Gabriel Mountains. The collision was reported just before 12:30 a.m. April 24. A white BMW slammed into a heavy metal gate used to close the road, according to California Highway patrol traffic logs.
One person was declared dead on arrival, a second person was taken to Foothill Presbyterian Hospital with undisclosed injuries, according to Dispatch Supervisor Troy of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The road was cleared by 5:10 a.m. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor REGION – Two separate fires burned within an hour of each other Thursday, killing two in a Walnut home and killing one in a Pomona apartment complex.
Three firefighters were injured during a fire in a two-story, 2,500-square-foot home in the 600 block of Rocking Horse Road in Walnut. The fire was reported at 9:54 a.m. Two people inside the structure were removed and declared dead at the scene, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. A total of 49 firefighters knocked down flames by 10:47 a.m. The three firefighters suffered minor injuries, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. One person was displaced by the house fire. A fire was reported in a first-floor unit of a two-story apartment complex in the 1100 block of East Franklin Avenue at 10:33 a.m. Smoke was seen by firefighters several blocks away. One person died in the Pomona fire that was knocked down by 11 a.m., the Los Angeles County Fire Department said. One person was taken to a trauma center, another person was evaluated at the scene for minor injuries. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor LOS ANGELES - A Montebello resident was killed on a stretch of the I-10 freeway in Pomona Saturday after he exited his vehicle, the California Highway Patrol said. Christopher Gilpineda, 21, was identified by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. Gilpineda exited his 2017 Honda Civic around 11:25 p.m. after getting a flat tire in the No. 3 and 4 lanes on the westbound I-10 freeway just west of Kellogg Drive. A 2018 Honda Civic first struck Gilpineda’s car before striking him, according to the CHP.
Gilpineda died at the scene of multiple blunt force injuries, the county coroner said All westbound lanes at Kellogg Drive were closed, as well as the northbound and southbound 57 freeway and 71 freeway trans roads to the westbound I-10 freeway, according to the CHP. Carlos Zuniga Medina, 29, was identified by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. He died from gunshot wounds. His death was ruled a homicide. The body was found just before 3:18 p.m. April 9 on the Vernon Avenue on ramp. Medina was declared dead on arrival, according to Dispatch Supervisor Troy of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. A Sig Alert for the on ramp from Vernon Avenue to the eastbound 210 freeway was initiated at 3:53 p.m. Thursday. The Sig Alert was canceled at 1:14 a.m. Friday, according to Officer Patrick Kimball of the California Highway Patrol Traffic Management Center.
April 8, police were called to a reported shooting victim at that same location after 10 p.m. No victim had been found. It is unclear if Wednesday nights call and Thursday nights discovery of a dead man are connected. The California Highway Patrol Investigative Services unit is determining the circumstances of the shooting, according to Officer Rodrigo Jimenez of the California Highway Patrol Baldwin Park Officer. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor MOUNTAINS - A passerby discovered the body of a male about 10 yards off the side of San Gabriel Canyon Road near mile marker 37 Saturday morning, a Sheriff’s sergeant said. Authorities were called to San Gabriel Canyon Road at mile marker 37 April 11 Around 11:30 a.m. A cyclist somehow found the remains, which may have been there for a longer period of time a short distance from the road, according to Sgt. Hayes of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s San Dimas Station.
It initially appears that the male died of natural causes. There appeared to be nothing suspicious, Hayes told SGV CityWatch. There is no identification yet for the body which is listed as a John Doe, according to Nani Cholakians of the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor LOS ANGELES - Detectives seek more victims of a man accused of molesting three boys in the Puente Hills - Rowland Heights Little League. A boy came forward March 19 and accused Carlton Harris, 47, of molesting him over the course of a year. Harris was the vice president of the little league organization, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. The boy and his family became close with Harris. “During visits to the suspect’s home, the victim states the suspect would sexually assault him,” according to the Los Angeles County. Two other boys came forward to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Special Victims Bureau detectives.
Harris was arrested March 30 and was formally charged April 2 by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office with one count of lewd acts on a child under 14 years old, one count of continuous sexual abuse of a minor and five counts of lewd acts on a child 14 or 15 years old. His bail is set at $530,000.00. Harris’ next court date is unknown at this time. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor LOS ANGELES - The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors renewed a $20,000 reward Tuesday in hopes of information leading to the arrest of a man who shot and killed a 4-year-old boy in Altadena four years ago.
The shooting occurred July 5, 2016 in the 300 block of West Figueroa Drive in Altadena. Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department homicide detectives believe a drunken fight led to the accidental shooting of the boy, identified as Salvador Esparza. Detectives believe the live-in boyfriend of the child’s mother and the boyfriend’s brother were the intended targets. The gunman apparently argued with the boyfriend and his brother an hour before the shooting took place. He returned in a dark colored sedan to the house on Figueroa Drive, exited and open fire. The gunman fired as many as 13 shots that night. The boyfriend was also shot, but survived his wounds.
