Written by AARON CASTREJON | CityWatch Editor LOS ANGELES – A man robbed two Cathay banks in the San Gabriel Valley, hitting a Monterey Park bank as recently as Tuesday. The suspect, dubbed the "Last Minute Bandit" due to him arriving late in the day, also cased a third Cathay Bank Friday, March 23 in Rowland Heights, but the suspect ultimately left, according to Laura Eimiller of the FBI Los Angeles Field Office. The suspect, clad in a brown hat, sunglasses and a long-sleeve collared shirt or light jacket, issued a demand note for cash at Cathay Bank, 17851 Colima Road in Industry. The suspect entered the bank just before 4:40 p.m., according to Lt. Hugo Reynaga of the Industry Sheriff’s Station. The suspect fled with about $2,000, Reynaga said. The suspect would issue a demand note and claim to have a weapon on him. he would even make a motion to indicate he was armed, but no weapon was seen, Eimiller said.

The prescribed burns will take place in the San Dimas Experimental Forest as part of an ongoing hazardous fuels mitigation effort, according to the U.S. Forest Service. Smoke may be visible along Glendora Ridge Road, San Dimas and La Verne. The San Dimas Experimental Forest is an outdoor hydrological laboratory to document and quantify the water cycle in semi-arid steeplands. Recognized as a biosphere reserve, the Experimental Forest was established in 1933, the U.S. Forest Service said. Julio Aleman, 43, died as the result of an intraoral gunshot wound. Aleman was identified by Lt. Larry Dietz of the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. First responders were dispatched to a call of a cardiac arrest victim at 8:12 a.m. along Glendora Mountain Road at Glendora Ridge Road. Firefighters arrived 14 minutes later and found the man dead on arrival, according to Marvin Lim, spokesman for the Los Angeles County Fire Department. California Highway Patrol officers were told the man was dead inside a car on Glendora Mountain Road, according to CHP radio traffic. Public records from the coroner show Aleman suffered from a history of anxiety, depression and alcoholism. Jason Michael Roberts was arrested after Norwalk station deputies discovered an “AR-15-style assault rifle” and one 9-millimeter handgun stashed in his dorm. After interviewing Roberts, deputies determined there was no threat to students or faculty. Biola security alerted Norwalk deputies around 2 p.m. last Friday to the weapons violations. Roberts, a Red Bluff, California resident, was booked on suspicion of possessing a firearm while on a university campus, possessing a weapon while on a university campus, manufacture of an assault weapon and possessing an unregistered firearm. Both weapons were unregistered, deputies said. The investigation is ongoing. A 20-year-old man was listed in critical condition, a 19-year-old woman was listed as stable after being shot during an attempted carjacking. The incident took place along San Gabriel Canyon Road near mile marker 23, according to Sgt. Wilson Wong of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s San Dimas Station. Azusa Police notified San Dimas deputies of two shooting victims who drove down from the canyon and stopped at Eleventh Street and San Gabriel Canyon Road at 11:22 p.m. The suspect, described as a Hispanic man in a grey hoodie, fled in a 2000’s-model Ford Mustang. Anyone with information on the suspect is urged to call the San Dimas Sheriff’s Station at 909-450-2700. Information can be provided anonymously by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). The two victims wound up at San Gabriel Canyon Road and Eleventh Street in Azusa sometime around 11:20 p.m. Deputies believe the shooting took place near Morris Dam, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s San Dimas Station radio traffic. Azusa Police called firefighters to treat and transport one man and one woman who were found shot, according to Dispatch Supervisor Martin Rangel of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. There are possibly four suspects in a green Ford Explorer, or similar SUV. Both victims are being taken to an area hospital for treatment. Written by AARON CASTREJON | CityWatch Editor PICO RIVERA - One driver was arrested after crashing and rolling a gold Toyota Corolla over an embankment on the 605 freeway Sunday morning.
The crash was reported around 5:27 a.m. on the north 605 north of Rose Hills Road. Passersby witnessed the Corolla go off the freeway, into the grass and bushes, roll over and land back on its wheels, according to California Highway Patrol traffic logs. The driver was arrested by a CHP officer at 7:14 a.m., but the charges the suspect is accused of were not immediately known, according to Officer Peter Nicholson of the CHP. Nicholson was unauthorized to give out the name of the suspect. Other passersby reported the driver of the Corolla may have hit other vehicles and was driving in excess of 100 miles per hour prior to crashing. The driver was not trapped and was able to self extricate from the Corolla. It appears the driver was the only occupant in the car and no one was transported to a hospital, according to Dispatch Supervisor Melanie Flores of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The death appears to be a suicide, according to Lt. Joe Mendoza of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Homicide Bureau. California Highway Patrol officers were told the man was dead inside a car on Glendora Mountain Road, according to CHP radio traffic. A full medical response was sent by firefighters, including a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s rescue helicopter. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau is handling the investigation. Floyd Hannis was identified by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. Hannis possibly suffered a medical issue, which caused him to fall and hit his head on the floor inside the 7-Eleven, 803 W. Arrow Hwy, March 18. Hannis’ death has been deferred, pending additional investigation. Los Angeles County Firefighters were dispatched at 2:10 p.m. The call was then upgraded after Hannis went into full arrest, said Dispatch Supervisor Cheryl Sims of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Firefighters then requested Azusa Police to respond after firefighters were about to pronounce Hannis dead at the scene, according to firefighter radio traffic. The store remained closed for a portion of the investigation. Several pieces of paper fixed to the front doors told approaching patrons the store was closed. Employees remained inside. Hannis’ body was held in an ambulance in the 7-Eleven lot to the east of the store, awaiting the arrival of coroner investigators. Customers unaware of what occurred entered the lot, driving or walking next to the ambulance. An inspector with the Los Angeles County Health Department also arrived, specifically why was not known. Hannis’ body was removed around 6 p.m., nearly four full hours after he collapsed. Hannis arrived in a red pickup truck and parked it at one of the 7-Eleven gas pumps. The truck was hauled away by a Jan’s towing flatbed minutes after Hannis’ body was taken away. Mario Espinoza was found dead on the shoulder of the north 605 freeway exit onto Firestone Boulevard around 1:13 a.m. Thursday. Investigators discovered a laceration to the man’s left arm. Espinoza was identified by Lt. Brian Kim of the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. “After the laceration, the decedent entered his vehicle and drove away from the location. His wound caused him to bleed profusely. Detectives believe he drove to the 605 fwy and eventually expired,” according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau. The death is being considered accidental. An autopsy has yet to be scheduled, Kim said. |
