Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor REGION - No one was injured after an unidentified suspect chucked padlocks from a moving vehicle and struck three Los Angeles County Sheriff’s patrol vehicles while on the freeway November 1.
In all three incidents the suspect and victims occupied the HOV lanes on the 134 and 210 freeways. The suspect was eastbound and all three patrol vehicles were westbound. The first incident occurred on the 134 freeway around 2 p.m. The second incident occurred on the 210 freeway at Huntington Drive. The third incident occurred on the 210 freeway at Mountain Avenue in Monrovia: the last two incidents happened about 20 minutes after the first, according to Kari Mercer of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Transit Services Bureau. There are no witnesses so far, Mercer told SGV CityWatch. The California Highway Patrol has assumed the investigation. Priscilla Michelle Cornejo, 39, and Johnathon David Cornejo, 33, were booked on suspicion of murder and other charges in the March 22 crash. Priscilla is accused of causing a head-on crash while driving in opposing lanes of the 60 freeway at Crossroads Parkway, killing an 11-year-old girl and severely wounding the girl’s father, according to the California Highway Patrol. Priscilla was driving a black Hyundai Sonata west on the 60 freeway east of the 605 freeway around 4:06 a.m. March 22, her husband following in a black Ford Taurus. Priscilla clipped a tractor trailer, causing it and the semi it was hauling to jackknife. Her Sonata flipped around, according to the CHP. Priscilla allegedly fled the scene by going eastbound in westbound lanes without headlights on. Johnathon U-turned and began following his wife Priscilla who crashed head on into a gray Toyota Corolla occupied by the 11-year-old girl who was killed at the scene. “After the collision, Priscilla Cornejo, abandoned the Hyundai and entered the Ford, being driven by her husband, and fled the scene westbound on State Route 60,” according to the CHP in a written statement. CHP Santa Fe Springs Area investigators took the husband and wife into custody with the help of the CHP Southern Division Warrant Service Team. Priscilla was charged murder, felony hit and run, two counts of driving on the wrong side of the road, reckless driving, filing a false auto theft report and misdemeanor hit and run, according to Los Angeles County booking records. Johnathon was charged with murder and being an accessory after the fact, according to Los Angeles County booking records. The husband and wife are being held in lieu $2 million bail and appeared in the Pomona Courthouse April 5. Both are scheduled back in court April 18. The driver fled the November 26, 2021 crash at Colima Road and Lambert Road in unincorporated South Whittier, but was caught. Darrell Maurice Jewett, 34, was detained, but later released pending additional investigation, according to the California Highway Patrol, Santa Fe Springs Office. The Santa Fe Springs Area Criminal Investigations Unit filed charges of murder, felony driving under the influence, felony hit and run and gross vehicular manslaughter, according to the CHP. The driver of a 2012 maroon Nissan Altima struck a blue 2020 Honda Accord after allegedly running a red light around 5:30 a.m. The collision caused both vehicles to strike a nearby business. Jewett was arraigned at the Bellflower Courthouse September 30 and is being held without bail. He is scheduled for an appearance in the Norwalk Courthouse October 25, according to Los Angeles County booking information. It is unclear if investigators have a description of the suspect who ran from the damaged white Mercedes-Benz C300. The collision occurred around 10:10 p.m. at the intersection of Leffingwell Road and Corley Drive, according to the California Highway Patrol Santa Fe Springs Office. The driver fled west on Leffingwell Road and the abandoned C300 was found on Laurel Avenue. The pedestrian was identified as 53-year-old Lorraine Naranjo, a Whittier resident. Michael Bell died from traumatic blunt force to the head and suffered neck trauma. His death was ruled accidental, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. Bell was last seen in Ontario driving a white Acura MDX. Authorities tracked his cell phone, which last gave a location somewhere north of Azusa along Highway 39, according to the Chino Police Department. April 14, firefighters and the California Highway Patrol were called by a passerby around 12:45 p.m. to a vehicle discovered over the side of Highway 39 south of Robbs Gulch near mile marker 23.20. Bell died at the scene, according to the California Highway Patrol. Bell was driving north on Highway 39 at an unknown speed. For undetermined reasons, Bell’s Acura veered off the roadway and crashed down an dirt and rock embankment, according to the California Highway Patrol. Bell suffered from undisclosed medical issues and may have been disoriented, according to the Chino Police Department. Manhattan Beach resident Thomas Katsky, 31, was found in a 2015 Toyota Corolla along Mt. Baldy Road near Shinn Road. Los Angeles County firefighters were called around 7 p.m. A firefighter pronounced Katsky’s death at 7:23 p.m. The cause of death was listed as multiple blunt force injuries. The death was ruled accidental, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. It is unknown how long the crash occurred before being discovered. The motorcyclist was on the trans road from the westbound 60 freeway to the northbound 605 freeway around 7:25 p.m. when her motorcycle struck a metal guard rail. Her body landed on the No. 5 lame of the north 605, according to the California Highway Patrol. The sedan struck the rider and the driver did not stop. The rider was identified previously as 32-year-old Candace Ostler, who was a self-described painter, illustrator, actor, singer and motorcyclist. Her latest works include 2020’s “Psycho Sister-In-Law” and 2019’s “Intolerance: No More.” The driver of the sedan was described as a middle-aged Caucasian male. Sidney Terrence Johnson, a 25-year-old Los Angeles man, was tracked down after a two-month investigation and arrested at his home. He was booked on suspicion of murder and is being held in lieu of $2 million bail. The case has been submitted to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, according to the California Highway Patrol. Bertha Hernandez, 35, was found with a gunshot wound to the head in a crash vehicle on the eastbound 210 freeway east of Baldwin Avenue, September 4. Hernandez was driving a black Mercedes-Benz when the shooting occurred around 9:05 a.m. “Upon arrival, officers observed a solo vehicle that had multiple bullet holes on the driver's side and the solo female occupant inside the vehicle had sustained multiple gunshot wounds,” according to the California Highway Patrol in a written statement. CHP officers responding to calls of gunfire and a traffic collision found the Mercedes-Benz had crashed into a sound wall, multiple bullet holes peppered the driver side. Hernandez was declared dead at the scene, according to the California Highway Patrol. The events leading up to the shooting are either unknown, or have yet to be publicly shared. Johnson is being held at the Inmate Reception Center in Los Angeles. There is no court date information available. Initially, officers believed that the bicyclist along the northbound lanes of Angeles Crest Highway at mile marker 27.55 died from some medical emergency, according to California Highway Patrol traffic logs. Officers responded to the scene around 8:19 a.m. July 17. They requested that all northbound lanes be shut down while firefighters performed CPR to revive the bicyclist, but he died at the scene, according to CHP traffic logs. The bicyclist was identified as Steve Gerdes, a Glendale resident, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. A 21-year- old woman stuck inside of the vehicle was extracted, lifted into a Los Angeles County Fire helicopter and was transported to Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center for treatment, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The crash was dispatched to first responders just after 11 a.m. Easter Sunday. The vehicle may be as many as 200 feet over the side of the road, according to the California Highway Patrol. |
