Massimo Barbagallo, 49, died from multiple blunt force injuries January 10. His death was ruled suicide, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office confirmed by email that Barbagallo did die while in custody. He faced 50 years to life in prison. Barbagallo was held in the North County Correctional Facility when he died. He was convicted April 6, 2022 of murder in the July 15, 2019 shooting death of 26-year-old Christian Jonathan Alarcon in what was believed to be a longstanding feud. The shooting happened in the 9400 block of Workman Avenue. First responders found Alarcon wounded on a residential front yard. He died after being hospitalized. Barbagallo was scheduled for sentencing February 23. Jeanette Gallegos, 27, and Justin Joseph, 28, were identified by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. Deputies responded to the 9200 block of Pentland Street on a report of domestic violence with a gunshot victim. Deputies discovered a 27-year-old woman suffering multiple gunshot wounds and 28-year-old man suffer a likely self-inflicted wound. Both died at the scene, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. “Three juveniles, ranging in age from 5 to 11, were removed from the home unharmed upon the deputies’ arrival. The three lived in the home and are believed to be the children of the deceased female victim,” according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department in a written statement. A handgun was recovered at the scene. Deputies will announce the arrest and provide the name of the suspect and a press conference scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday, May 20 at the Sheriff’s Temple Station, 8838 E. Las Tunas Dr., in Temple City. The brutal assault and armed robbery of a rideshare driver in South El Monte May 10 was caught on the driver’s dash camera and shared far and wide. The assault and robbery occurred near Rosemead Boulevard and Rush Street around 9:20 p.m. The driver, an older Asian man, was left multiple facial trauma, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor LOS ANGELES - The 52-year-old detainee questioned in the shooting death of an 83-year-old man was arrested and booked on suspicion of murder. John McHugh, a Temple City man, is accused of shooting his father, said Trina Schrader of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau. The father, Michael Patrick McHugh, was identified by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner.
The shooting occurred in the 4900 block of Halifax Road just after 3 p.m. April 24. Deputies responding to the gunshot victim call found Michael McHugh suffering from a wound to the upper torso. He died at the scene, investigators said. John McHugh was detained at the scene. Booking records show McHugh was arrested at 4:30 p.m. April 24. He is being held at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles in lieu of $2.03 million bail ahead of a scheduled appearance in Alhambra Superior Court April 28. Massimo Barbagallo, 46, pleaded not guilty to one count of murder with an allegation of using a handgun to cause death, according to Ricardo Santiago of the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. Barbagallo is accused of gunning down his unarmed neighbor, 26-year-old Cristian Jonathan Alarcon.
The shooting may have been the result of a long-standing feud between the two neighbors, homicide investigators said. Barbagallo’s bail has been set at $3 million. He is scheduled to return to Alhambra Superior Court August 9. He faces a possible maximum of life in state prison if convicted as charged. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor LOS ANGELES - A stabbing suspect found guilty on four felony counts will be spending 10 years plus life in prison in an attack against his girlfriend. Matthew Fay Echauri, 25, was sentenced Tuesday to time in state prison. The above sentence includes the possibility of parole, according to Venusse Navid of the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Michael Villalobos also imposed a 10-year protective order against Echauri, Navid said.
Echauri was found guilty this February on four felony counts: one count each of attempted murder and mayhem and two counts of dissuading a witness from reporting a crime with force and violence. The jury also found true that Echauri used a dangerous and deadly weapon, a knife, during the crime and that he inflicted great bodily injury, Navid said. Echauri stabbed his then 18-year-old girlfriend multiple times after an argument March 2, 2017 in her Temple City home. Two days into being taken into custody, Echauri called the girlfriend and threatened to harm her if she spoke to police. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor LOS ANGELES - A deputy assigned to the Sheriff’s Temple Station remains hospitalized, but in stable condition after falling down a flight of stairs while fighting with a suspect. The deputy, a 6-year veteran of the Sheriff’s Department, was rushed by ground ambulance to County/USC Medical Center after becoming injured around 5:55 p.m. January 29. The deputy received a head injury in the fall. The deputy responded to a call of a a reported drunk man on the second floor of a business in the 5600 block of Rosemead Boulevard in Temple City. During an arrest attempt, the deputy and suspect, 58-year-old William Gerald Penn began fighting and eventually fell down some stairs, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau.
Penn, an Arcadia man, was booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer. He is being held in lieu of $75,000 bail. Penn was briefly hospitalized for minor injuries, the Sheriff’s Information Bureau said. |
