Written by AARON CASTREJON | CityWatch Editor LOS ANGELES - Capital murder charges were formally brought against the Long Beach man who went on a two-month killing spree that took the life of his ex-wife and a woman he believed to be his ex-wife. Miguel Angel Prieto, 43, was charged with four felony counts, including two counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder. The felony complaint includes a special circumstance allegation of multiple murders. Additionally, the charging document contains a special allegation that the defendant personally and intentionally discharged a handgun, which caused great bodily injury and death to the victims, according to Sara Ardalani of the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
The complaint also includes that Prieto was previously convicted of assault with a deadly weapon in 2015. On April 11, Prieto went to his ex-wife’s Covina apartment and fatally shot Maria Perez, 42. Witnesses and family identified Prieto as a suspect. He was located in Long beach hours after the killing and taken into custody. Four days before murdering Perez, Prieto is accused of opening fire on a woman he believed to be her aunt inside a Long Beach restaurant. If convicted as charged, Prieto the death penalty or life in prison without parole. A decision on seeking the death penalty will be made at a later date. Written by AARON CASTREJON | CityWatch Editor MOUNTAINS – A suspect is still outstanding after shooting a man and woman in the Azusa Canyon late Monday night.
A 20-year-old man was listed in critical condition, a 19-year-old woman was listed as stable after being shot during an attempted carjacking. The incident took place along San Gabriel Canyon Road near mile marker 23, according to Sgt. Wilson Wong of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s San Dimas Station. Azusa Police notified San Dimas deputies of two shooting victims who drove down from the canyon and stopped at Eleventh Street and San Gabriel Canyon Road at 11:22 p.m. The suspect, described as a Hispanic man in a grey hoodie, fled in a 2000’s-model Ford Mustang. Floyd Hannis was identified by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. Hannis possibly suffered a medical issue, which caused him to fall and hit his head on the floor inside the 7-Eleven, 803 W. Arrow Hwy, March 18. Hannis’ death has been deferred, pending additional investigation. Los Angeles County Firefighters were dispatched at 2:10 p.m. The call was then upgraded after Hannis went into full arrest, said Dispatch Supervisor Cheryl Sims of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Firefighters then requested Azusa Police to respond after firefighters were about to pronounce Hannis dead at the scene, according to firefighter radio traffic. The store remained closed for a portion of the investigation. Several pieces of paper fixed to the front doors told approaching patrons the store was closed. Employees remained inside. Hannis’ body was held in an ambulance in the 7-Eleven lot to the east of the store, awaiting the arrival of coroner investigators. Customers unaware of what occurred entered the lot, driving or walking next to the ambulance. An inspector with the Los Angeles County Health Department also arrived, specifically why was not known. Hannis’ body was removed around 6 p.m., nearly four full hours after he collapsed. Hannis arrived in a red pickup truck and parked it at one of the 7-Eleven gas pumps. The truck was hauled away by a Jan’s towing flatbed minutes after Hannis’ body was taken away. |
