Initially, the California Highway Patrol reported a collision with a vehicle resulted in the death of Stephen Naftilan. The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner revealed he died from acute cardian dysfunction. Naftilan crashed while cycling at 10 a.m. at mile marker 24.10. In a follow-up inquiry, Rodrigo Jimenez of the CHP Baldwin Park Office reported Naftilan "was unable to keep his bicycle upright and the right side of Mr. Doe's bicycle crashed into the asphalt roadway. A passerby and another bicyclist who observed the crash, responded to Mr. Doe and observed he was unresponsive." CPR was administered until Los Angeles County Firefighters arrived. CPR was continued until Naftilan was pronounced dead at 10:52 a.m. Highway 39 from East Fork Road to Roxspring Way was closed until 5:43 p.m. for the investigation. Alcohol and drugs are not considered factors in Naftilan's death, Jimenez said. Los Angeles County fire fighters and the California Highway Patrol were called to Highway 39 south of East Fork Road around 10:16 a.m. July 28. Few details are available at the time this post was launched. It is unclear how many bicyclists or vehicles were involved, according to Officer Kendricks of the California Highway Patrol. Firefighters arrived on scene and met with someone who was performing CPR on an injured person, according to California Highway Patrol traffic logs. Northbound and southbound lanes of Highway 39 between rocks Springs Way in Azusa to East Fork Road are closed for at least three more hours for an investigation, the CHP said. The California Highway Patrol was dispatched to Glendora Mountain Road at mile marker 6.50 around 12:50 a.m. June 8 to a crashed black Mazda Miata. A passerby in a black Honda Accord apparently called authorities to report the crash, according to Officer Moises Marroquin of the CHP Traffic Management Center. Marroquin did not immediately have an estimate on how many feet the vehicle traveled off Glendora Mountain Road. Traffic logs only indicated the vehicle was “far down” off the road. Authorities were waiting for enough daylight to retrieve the body, Marroquin told SGV CityWatch. The body was found along Mt. Baldy road at mile marker 2.18. A hiker reportedly discovered the body inside a black vehicle, according to the California Highway Patrol. Los Angeles County Firefighters were called around 7 p.m. A firefighter called the man’s time of death at 7:23 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol. It is unclear how long the crash occurred before being discovered. A 21-year- old woman stuck inside of the vehicle was extracted, lifted into a Los Angeles County Fire helicopter and was transported to Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center for treatment, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The crash was dispatched to first responders just after 11 a.m. Easter Sunday. The vehicle may be as many as 200 feet over the side of the road, according to the California Highway Patrol. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA - A Pomona man was booked on suspicion of several felony counts of attempted murder and carrying a loaded firearm in a vehicle after being arrested more than four months after shooting at a vehicle occupied by a man, woman and child, the CHP said.
Preston Urel Givens Jr., 25, is accused of unloading a firearm at a Nissan Altima on the I-10 freeway near Fairplex Drive July 10, 2020 after a highway violence incident. He was identified by members of the California Highway Patrol Baldwin Park Special Enforcement Team, according to the CHP. Givens was arrested during a traffic stop November 13. None of the intended victims were injured. After the incident, which occurred at 12:30 a.m., the victims went back to their residence in Bakersfield. “Officers from the CHP Baldwin Park Special Enforcement Team conducted extensive follow up for this investigation. As a result of their efforts, they were able to identify the suspect,” According to Officer Tony Chen of the California Highway Patrol Baldwin Park Special Enforcement Team. Givens is being held in lieu of more than $3.6 million bail at the Men’s Central Jail in Los Angeles. His next scheduled court date is November 20 in Pomona Superior Court. Ana Miramontes, 41, was named by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. While the coroner would not release the name of the man because next of kin had not been notified, the California Highway Patrol identified him as Daniel Miramontes who is in his 40s. The fatal collision occurred on the eastbound I-10 freeway at Via Verde around 2:08 a.m. Witnesses reported seeing a black minivan rear end a white sedan, according to California Highway Patrol traffic logs. Both Ana Miramontes and Daniel Miramontes occupied the white sedan that was rear ended. They both died at the scene, according to California Highway Patrol officer Xavier Becerra. Both fatal victims were pronounced dead at the scene at 2:30 a.m., according to California Highway Patrol traffic logs. The crash initially affected the No. 2, 3 and 4 traffic lanes. CHP officers temporarily had all lanes blocked during the investigation. Eventually all lanes, except for the No. 1 lane, remained closed. A good Samaritan attempted to perform CPR on at least one person injured in the crash who was reportedly down in lanes of traffic, according to CHP traffic logs. Two others were injured in the crash: an 18-year-old man who suffered major injuries and a 16-year-old male who suffered moderate injuries were taken to Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center, according to the CHP. Initial reports from the scene indicated that one person, possibly two people, ran from the crash and into the nearby foothills. The CHP requested assistance from the air in locating a person described as a driver who fled into the foothills, according to CHP traffic logs. It is unclear if the CHP determined if someone actually ran from the crash scene. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA - The California Highway Patrol arrested a driver September 7 after he allegedly led Claremont Police and CHP officers on a chase throughout the San Gabriel Valley.
Claremont officers initially pursued Anthony Orlando Franco, 33, who was driving in a stolen vehicle. The CHP was notified of the chase as it was west on the I-10 freeway west of Indian Hill Boulevard, according to Officer Rodrigo Jimenez of the California Highway Patrol Baldwin Park Office. CHP officers took over the pursuit of a black 2017 Kia Soul on the west 210 freeway at Grand Avenue, Jimenez told SGV CityWatch. The chase took to surface streets through Glendora, Covina, Irwindale, Pomona, La Verne, Claremont, Baldwin Park and West Covina. He also allegedly fled in opposing lanes of traffic, Jimenez told SGV CityWatch. The suspect also traversed the I-10, 210, 57, 71 and 605 freeways. The pursuit briefly reentered the 210 freeway eastbound from Sunflower Avenue in Glendora. The CHP attempted to disable the Kia Soul with the Pursuit Intervention Technique, but the vehicle kept moving and exited onto southbound San Dimas Avenue in San Dimas. While westbound in the area of Walnut Avenue and Arrow Highway, the driver reportedly struck the front of a CHP officer’s patrol vehicle, Jimenez told SGV CityWatch. The CHP canceled the chase due to the driver’s reckless nature. Claremont officers located the suspect and continued the pursuit into Pomona where the suspect abandoned the Soul and fled on foot at the American Inn & Suites, 310 E. Foothill Blvd. The Kia rolled and crashed into two parked vehicles, Jimenez told SGV CityWatch. Franco was caught shortly after running and was medically cleared before being booked at the Inmate Reception Center on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon other than a firearm, assaulting a peace officer, felony evading an officer, being in possession of a stolen vehicle and driving under the influence of drugs, Jimenez told SGV CityWatch. Franco was additionally booked for warrants related to felony evading and parole violations. One person from the vehicle was found near the crash scene. That person was transported by ground to a nearby hospital for treatment, according to dispatch supervisor Troy of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The crash was reported around at 10:23 p.m. July 2, according to Lt. Ed MacKenzie of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s San Dimas Station. The crash occurred along San Gabriel Canyon Road at mile marker 21.67 The vehicle is submerged as much as 17 feet deep. A passerby either observed the crash as it happened, or saw the damage and called authorities, MacKenzie told SGV CityWatch. The crash damaged a reported 100 feet of chain link fence along the roadway, according to the California Highway Patrol. The Los Angeles County Fire Department sent a dive team and used sonar to locate the vehicle, but an extensive search that included a helicopter did not yield an additional victim, according to fire department radio traffic. Search operations will resume with the Sheriff’s Department after 7 a.m., MacKenzie told SGV CityWatch. “Our Emergency Services Detail handles our dive team. They’re trying to get in touch with the folks up on the mountain,” MacKenzie said regarding the continued search operations. Authorities responded to Mt Baldy Road at mile marker 1.47 around 2:15 p.m. June 12. At 4:11 p.m. the CHP confirmed the death, according to California Highway Patrol traffic logs. Neither the CHP, nor the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s San Dimas Station could confirm how far over the side the vehicle fell. Sheriff’s deputies are assisting the CHP at the scene. |
