The California Highway Patrol was dispatched to Glendora Mountain Road at mile marker 6.50 around 12:50 a.m. June 8 to a crashed black Mazda Miata. A passerby in a black Honda Accord apparently called authorities to report the crash, according to Officer Moises Marroquin of the CHP Traffic Management Center. Marroquin did not immediately have an estimate on how many feet the vehicle traveled off Glendora Mountain Road. Traffic logs only indicated the vehicle was “far down” off the road. Authorities were waiting for enough daylight to retrieve the body, Marroquin told SGV CityWatch. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor BARSTOW – A twenty-something couple are accused of murder in the death of their 1-year-old child who was driven all the way to Pomona where family made the grisly discovery in the couple’s vehicle, police said.
Ricardo Mendez, 27, and Antanita Miller, 24, were booked at the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga after Pomona officers and Barstow detectives began investigating the suspicious circumstances behind the child’s death. Pomona officers were called to Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center just before 8 p.m. April 25. The child was declared dead by hospital staff upon arrival. The child displayed suspicious trauma, including lesions, bruising and burn marks. Some injuries were in various stages of healing, according to the Barstow Police Department. A homicide investigation was launched by Barstow Police after Pomona officers notified them that the death likely occurred in the child’s Barstow residence. Miller was detained as she arrived to Pomona Valley. Mendez was detained in the 2100 block of Spencer Street after leaving the family’s Pomona home, according to the Barstow Police Department. “During the investigation detectives learned that on April 25, 2022, at approximately 7:00 PM, Ricardo Mendez and Antanita Miller arrived unexpectedly at Mendez’s family’s home located in the city of Pomona. Family members located the victim’s lifeless body in the back of Ricardo Mendez’ and Antanita Miller’s vehicle,” according to the Barstow Police Department. “Some of Mendez’s family members immediately drove the victim to the Pomona Valley Hospital for treatment. Ricardo Mendez and Antanita Miller stayed at the family home and did not initially go to the hospital.” A search warrant served at the Barstow home and vehicle occupied by the couple during their grisly journey revealed items believed to be used during the crimes, according to the Barstow Police Department. Michael Bell died from traumatic blunt force to the head and suffered neck trauma. His death was ruled accidental, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. Bell was last seen in Ontario driving a white Acura MDX. Authorities tracked his cell phone, which last gave a location somewhere north of Azusa along Highway 39, according to the Chino Police Department. April 14, firefighters and the California Highway Patrol were called by a passerby around 12:45 p.m. to a vehicle discovered over the side of Highway 39 south of Robbs Gulch near mile marker 23.20. Bell died at the scene, according to the California Highway Patrol. Bell was driving north on Highway 39 at an unknown speed. For undetermined reasons, Bell’s Acura veered off the roadway and crashed down an dirt and rock embankment, according to the California Highway Patrol. Bell suffered from undisclosed medical issues and may have been disoriented, according to the Chino Police Department. Manhattan Beach resident Thomas Katsky, 31, was found in a 2015 Toyota Corolla along Mt. Baldy Road near Shinn Road. Los Angeles County firefighters were called around 7 p.m. A firefighter pronounced Katsky’s death at 7:23 p.m. The cause of death was listed as multiple blunt force injuries. The body was found along Mt. Baldy road at mile marker 2.18. A hiker reportedly discovered the body inside a black vehicle, according to the California Highway Patrol. Los Angeles County Firefighters were called around 7 p.m. A firefighter called the man’s time of death at 7:23 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol. It is unclear how long the crash occurred before being discovered. Jeanette Gallegos, 27, and Justin Joseph, 28, were identified by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. Deputies responded to the 9200 block of Pentland Street on a report of domestic violence with a gunshot victim. Deputies discovered a 27-year-old woman suffering multiple gunshot wounds and 28-year-old man suffer a likely self-inflicted wound. Both died at the scene, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. “Three juveniles, ranging in age from 5 to 11, were removed from the home unharmed upon the deputies’ arrival. The three lived in the home and are believed to be the children of the deceased female victim,” according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department in a written statement. A handgun was recovered at the scene. The motorcyclist was on the trans road from the westbound 60 freeway to the northbound 605 freeway around 7:25 p.m. when her motorcycle struck a metal guard rail. Her body landed on the No. 5 lame of the north 605, according to the California Highway Patrol. The sedan struck the rider and the driver did not stop. The rider was identified previously as 32-year-old Candace Ostler, who was a self-described painter, illustrator, actor, singer and motorcyclist. Her latest works include 2020’s “Psycho Sister-In-Law” and 2019’s “Intolerance: No More.” The driver of the sedan was described as a middle-aged Caucasian male. The body was found off the side of the road along mile marker 21. The body is listed as a John Doe, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. Law enforcement was called to the scene around 9:30 a.m. Homicide detectives were called to investigate. Initially, detectives believe this to be a natural death, according to Sgt. Patrick Gadut of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s San Dimas Station. The coroner will determine cause of death. Alfonso Guzman Jr., a 26-year-old Duarte man and father of two, was shot dead in his vehicle as he sat parked with his girlfriend on a scenic overlook in the 3300 block of Turnbull Canyon Road around 1 a.m. May 20. His girlfriend suffered injuries not life-threatening, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
Los Angeles County Sheriff’s homicide detectives announced a $10,000 reward at a November 18 news conference for any information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspect.
Through translation, Guzman’s mother, Maria Ayala pleaded with the community to help catch her son’s killer. “My son was a good son, a good father. He leaves behind two boys, two boys that are suffering and constantly ask about him. They go to school and tell me: ‘mama, daddy is watching over me, he is hugging me. When is he coming?’ When it rains they say: ‘daddy is getting wet. When is he getting down from up there?’ My son was a hardworking person, he was attending school and had many projects planned ahead. As a mother who is dead inside, I beg that if anybody knows something please call. Thank you,” Ayala said. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor SAN GABRIEL MOUNTAINS - A burned body was discovered after firefighters extinguished a destructive mobile home fire in the mountains above Azusa early Wednesday morning.
The fire claimed one life, destroyed three mobile home trailers and burned a 10-foot x 10-foot spot of vegetation at Camp Williams Resort, 24210 East Fork Road., November 17. Firefighters were dispatched at 1:04 a.m. and arrived by 1:22 a.m., according to Dispatch Supervisor Martin Rangel of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The fire was knocked down at 2:09 a.m. Firefighters made a request for the coroner at 2:24 a.m., Rangel told SGV CityWatch. There is no identification yet for the victim. “No ID yet. It’s probably going to be a while. We don’t even have a gender yet,” according to Lt. David Smith of the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. |
