Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor SAN GABRIEL MOUNTAINS - A burned body was discovered after firefighters extinguished a destructive mobile home fire in the mountains above Azusa early Wednesday morning.
The fire claimed one life, destroyed three mobile home trailers and burned a 10-foot x 10-foot spot of vegetation at Camp Williams Resort, 24210 East Fork Road., November 17. Firefighters were dispatched at 1:04 a.m. and arrived by 1:22 a.m., according to Dispatch Supervisor Martin Rangel of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The fire was knocked down at 2:09 a.m. Firefighters made a request for the coroner at 2:24 a.m., Rangel told SGV CityWatch. There is no identification yet for the victim. “No ID yet. It’s probably going to be a while. We don’t even have a gender yet,” according to Lt. David Smith of the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. The remains belonged to 51-year-old Miguel King. He died from a gunshot wound to the head. His death is listed as a homicide, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. King’s body was discovered along Glendora Mountain Road near mile marker 1 about 15 feet off the roadway August 14, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department radio traffic. King was initially listed as DOE #14 until coroner investigators were able to identify the body. The body discovered in the mountains is likely the same Miguel King, also age 51, who was listed as a missing person by Sheriff’s detectives. Miguel Angel King was last seen by his family at his Los Angeles home in the 12300 block of Spring Street July 20. He reportedly did not have a history of going missing, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. The niece of Miguel Angel King started a gofundme page to raise funeral expenses for her uncle. The missing King’s white Toyota hatchback was found abandoned and parked at an Inglewood apartment complex in the 100 block of West Queen Street around 1 p.m. July 24, according to the Los Angeles Times. A suspect has been detained on an unspecified trail in the area near the fire. the CHP and county deputies are en route to the detained suspect.
UPDATE, 9:07 a.m.: Forward progress on the fire has been stopped at four acres. Aircraft have helped tremendously in keeping the flames from spreading, according to the U.S. Forest Service. MOUNTAINS - The Los Angeles County Fire Department and U.S. Forest Service firefighters are responding to a brush fire along East Fork Road near Glendora Mountain Road above San Dimas. A technician with the US Forest Service reports three to five acres running slowly uphill. The partially decomposed body was found Saturday August 14 along Glendora Mountain Road at mile marker 1 about 15 feet off the roadway, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department radio traffic. The body has been given the temporary identification of Doe #14, according to Sarah Ardalani, public information officer with the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. The circumstances surrounding the discovery, as well as any possible criminal doings that may have led to the death are not publicly known. The Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau has not returned a request for information on the investigation. Deputies and mountain rescue personnel worked over the weekend to recover the body. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor MOUNTAINS - A 62-year-old bicyclist died along Angeles Crest Highway above La Cañada Flintridge Saturday morning, the California Highway Patrol said.
Initially, officers believed that the bicyclist along the northbound lanes of Angeles Crest Highway at mile marker 27.55 died from some medical emergency, according to California Highway Patrol traffic logs. Officers responded to the scene around 8:19 a.m. July 17. They requested that all northbound lanes be shut down while firefighters performed CPR to revive the bicyclist, but he died at the scene, according to CHP traffic logs. The bicyclist was identified as Steve Gerdes, a Glendale resident, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. The U.S. Forest Service, aided by Los Angeles County Firefighters, extinguished the baby blaze along San Gabriel Canyon Road near mile marker 21.67. County firefighters were dispatched around 11:19 p.m. The fire slowly crept downhill as crews from the ground and from the air worked to douse it. No structures were threatened. The cause is under investigation. LOS ANGELES - A $10,000 reward will be announced Friday for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the murder of a man in the San Gabriel Mountains March 25. San Dimas Sheriff’s Station Captain Walid Ashrafnia will be flanked by Homicide Bureau personnel, Sheriff Alex Villanueva and a representative of Los Angeles County Board Supervisor Kathryn Barger to discuss the shooting death of Gerald Purdue. Described as an avid hiker, 63-year-old Gerald “Myles” Perdue was found dead along Mt. Baldy Road near mile marker 3.09. Deputies were notified at 1:45 p.m. An overview of a coroner report noted Perdue died on a hiking trail, the victim of a gunshot wound to the chest. “Deputies from San Dimas Station responded to the location regarding an unresponsive male who was found in a culvert about 60 yards off the road. Upon their arrival, deputies located the victim, a male White in his 60’s who was suffering from a gunshot wound to the torso and pronounced deceased,” according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau in a previous statement. CityWatch Editor Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor MOUNTAINS - Described as cold, tired, but otherwise uninjured, a 45-year-old hiker was plucked off the mountainside in the rugged terrain far above the San Gabriel Valley Tuesday.
The hiker, identified as Rene Compean, was found around 3:45 p.m., south of Mt. Waterman near an area described as Twin Peaks East and Triplet Rocks. Tactical medics from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Bureau hoisted Compean and dropped him off at the Chilao Campgrounds. Compean was reported missing by a friend at 6 p.m. Monday, April 12. Compean messaged his friend and said that he was lost and his cell phone battery was dying. Earlier in the hike, compean sent a text message showing where he had been hiking. Rescuers with multiple search and rescue teams sat out overnight Monday and throughout Tuesday to try and find a hiker. “Unfortunately, Rene did not have his "location" on for his phone, so team members were unable to get his location code from the photo. We were able to send the photo out to the media and on social media platforms hoping someone would recognize the area in the photo and call us to help,” According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Using that photo, deputies enlisted public help possibly identify the locale were Compean was possibly stranded. With a stroke of luck, a ham radio operator was able to surmise several possible locations were Compean could have been stranded, aiding rescuers. Waterman area of the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument.
The hiker, only described as a 45-year-old Hispanic man, was reported missing at 6 p.m. April 12. He sent a photo to a friend earlier in the hike and, judging by the spot on his legs, he appears to have traversed a recent burn area, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau. The missing hiker’s vehicle was found unoccupied near the Buckhorn campground/ trailhead. The friend of the missing hiker sent a text. The friend alerted deputies. “The caller stated his friend ... was lost and his cell phone was dying,” according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau. Anyone who can help locate the missing hiker is urged to call the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Crescenta Valley Station at 818-248-3464. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor MOUNTAINS - One person was just extracted and one person is reportedly pinned under a vehicle that went off the asphalt on Glendora Mountain Road near Glendora Ridge Road.
A 21-year- old woman stuck inside of the vehicle was extracted, lifted into a Los Angeles County Fire helicopter and was transported to Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center for treatment, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The crash was dispatched to first responders just after 11 a.m. Easter Sunday. The vehicle may be as many as 200 feet over the side of the road, according to the California Highway Patrol. |
