DUARTE - A suspect possibly 16 to 17 years old attacked a 13-year-old as his friends watched on at a Duarte park June 20.

The suspect punched the victim and pointed a switchblade in his face after the victim and his 13-year-old friends refused to buy marijuana, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Temple Station.

The incident unfolded at Lena Valenzuela Park, 2120 Mountain Ave.

The 13-year-olds were seated at some benches when approached by the suspect.

After refusing the marijuana offer, the suspect asked one teen if he “banged.” He was punched by the suspect after stating he did not, deputies said.
“The suspect ... pulled a switchblade out and pointed it at the victim’s face. The suspect asked the victim’s friends if they wanted to make $3,000 and kill the victim,” deputies said in a written statement.

The teens refused. The suspect told the victim he was lucky and fled on a bicycle.

The victim reportedly did not sustain any injuries.

The investigation is ongoing.
