CityWatch Editor DUARTE - A man hospitalized Wednesday evening later died from his suspicious injuries, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. A person of interest was detained at the scene in the 2500 block of Maynard Drive. First responders were sent to the home around 6:49 p.m., according to Sheriff’s Homicide investigators. Detectives have yet to elaborate on the nature of the initial response to the home, nor a possible motive in this suspicious death. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor DUARTE - Deputies searched two schools in Duarte Tuesday morning and soon determined that a call of an active shooter turned out to be a hoax.
Deputies searched and secured Duarte High School, 1565 Central Avenue, and California School of the Arts, 1401 Highland Avenue, February 7. A call was received at 9:29 a.m. of an active shooter at the Duarte High School address, but the caller mentioned California School of the Arts, according to Sgt. Robert Leyba of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Temple Station. “We’ve been informed just a little while ago that there were several hoaxes in different counties with an active shooter and students,” Leyba told SGV CityWatch. Both schools were searched, and nothing was found. Detectives are trying to determine the source of the call and if the call in Duarte was related to any of the hoax calls in surrounding counties. The unidentified man died at the scene in the 3200 block of Hacienda Drive. Homicide detectives are assisting Azusa Police with the investigation, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. The unspecified incident occurred at 10 a.m. No other information is available. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor UPDATE, 8:20 p.m.: The Fire in the Duarte foothills is 20 percent contained. As of 7:20 p.m., 25 to 30 acres were scorched. The small fire in the San Gabriel Riverbed was 100 contained, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
The Mel Canyon area and streets around Encanto Park will remain closed until 10 p.m, according to the City of Duarte. UPDATE, 5:23 p.m.: Firefighters have requested a second-alarm for the brush fire burning above Duarte. The fire has burned about 15 to 20 acres, according to Los Angeles County Fire Department radio traffic. The fire is reportedly burning north of Brookridge Road and Opal Canyon Road. There is no threat to the homes below. Traffic is blocked at the intersection of Mel Canyon Road and Royal Oaks Road, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Temple Station. DUARTE - Firefighters are reporting 3 acres of brush are burning above Duarte Sunday afternoon. The fire is burning with a moderate rate of spread in an easterly direction above Brookridge Drive and Mell Canyon Road. One structure is possibly threatened, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department radio traffic. A full brush fire response has been initiated by Los Angeles County Fire. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor DUARTE – Firefighters and deputies are investigating an envelope containing a “suspicious substance” at a City of Hope Facility. The envelope was discovered at the City of Hope FLASH building, 2240 Buena Vista St., around 2:31 p.m. The envelope containing the unknown substance was discovered in the mail room at the one-story building, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. 100 employees have been evacuated. No injuries or exposure to the substance has been reported. The building is the Facilities, Logistics and Support Hub for City of Hope Duarte. No other information is available. The shooting occurred in the 2000 block of South Broderick Avenue around 10:25 p.m., according to Dispatch Supervisor Michael Pittman of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Both victims were taken to an area trauma center for treatment, according to Los Angeles County Fire Dispatch Supervisor Miguel Ornelas. No one else was injured in the shooting. While the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Temple Station watch commander did not have information on the shooting, a white, older-model, full-size pickup truck, possibly a Ford, was seen driving slowly northbound through the neighborhood, according to Sheriff’s radio traffic. Several loud pops were heard after a resident reportedly witnessed the truck moving north on Broderick. The white truck had tinted windows. No other information is available. Three people were exposed to the substance. No hazardous materials were found on the patients. Hazmat technicians with the Los Angeles County Fire Department are on scene, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The package is isolated to one room with no impact to hospital operations. The package was received by City of Hope staff around 2:40 p.m., according to Deputy Morgan Arteaga of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau. Deputies with the Temple Sheriff’s Station are on scene with firefighters. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Hazmat Detail is en route, Arteaga said. The collision occurred around 5:24 p.m. at Las Lomas Road and Hacienda Drive. Firefighters were dispatched to the scene along with a helicopter, but the arriving copter was cancelled after the pedestrian was pronounced dead, according to Dispatch Supervisor Bernard Peters of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The driver remained at the scene of the collision, according to Lt Frank Ruiz of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Temple Station. Ruiz had limited information and was unsure if distracted or DUI driving was a cause. It was unclear if the pedestrian was jaywalking or in a marked crosswalk. The victim succumbed to the injuries sustained. The victim and a suspect made their way to the Duarte/City of Hope Station where the victim died after medical attempts to revive the victim failed. A suspect is detained, according to Ramon Montenegro of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Transit Services Bureau. The attack occurred some time around 11:30 a.m. The 9-1-1 call came in from Irwindale Police to the Sheriff’s Department. Deputies and Los Angeles County Firefighters arrived to the train as it stopped at the Duarte Station and met the suspect and victim, Montenegro said. Sheriff’s Homicide investigators are en route to the dual crime scenes in Duarte and Irwindale. One of the passengers awaiting an eastbound train in Duarte described a chaotic scene. “[I] Was waiting for the train, to go to citrus, the E/B train arrived people ran off when deputies got there the ones on the train pointed out the suspect. They arrested him,” said the passenger who wished to not be identified. “When fire got there, they started CPR for 15 min. Then stopped. The deputies put up crime tape so I left,” The passenger said. Gold Line trains are skipping the Duarte/City of Hope Station, according to the Los Angeles Metropolitan Transportation Authority.
