Written by AARON CASTREJON | CityWatch Editor MOUNTAINS - Two men caught firing guns over the mountainside along San Gabriel Canyon Road above Azusa Friday were never located after an extensive search, the CHP said.
The two men fled on foot from the Chevy Suburban they crashed while speeding away from California Highway Patrol officers pursuing them south on San Gabriel Canyon Road after 2:30 a.m. The search was called off around 2 p.m. – nearly 12 hours after they fled authorities. The men ran towards the forest, presumably with the weapons they were firing. No weapons were ever located in the crashed SUV, said Officer Rodrigo Jimenez of the California Highway Patrol Baldwin Park Office. A CHP officer discovered the men firing guns in a dirt turnout near mile marker 24 while en route to a call of an abandoned vehicle. “The officers made contact with the individuals and began to give them orders to surrender. The individuals ignored the orders, entered a Chevrolet Suburban that was parked near where they were standing,” Jimenez said in a written statement. The suspects crashed about one mile south of where they were firing their weapons. The Suburban that the suspects crashed was not reported stolen, but officers did not know if it belonged to any of the suspects, Jimenez told SGV CityWatch. The chase began some time after 2:30 a.m. when officers, responding to a call of an abandoned vehicle, found two men firing guns into an embankment. The CHP officer detained the men at gunpoint and ordered them to surrender, but the men fled into an SUV, according to the California Highway Patrol. The men were seen firing their weapons near mile marker 24 on San Gabriel Canyon Road. The suspects led the CHP on a chase southbound, eventually crashing a mile later. The suspects ditched their SUV, but took their weapons with them, the CHP said. CHP officers, assisted by deputies with the San Dimas Sheriff’s Station, continue searching for the suspects.
