The checkpoint will be held at an undisclosed location within the Walnut/Diamond Bar Station patrol area beginning at 6 p.m. and ending Saturday morning at 2 a.m., according to the Sheriff’s Department. “DUI checkpoint locations are determined based on data showing incidents of impaired driving-related crashes. The primary purpose of DUI checkpoints are to promote public safety by taking suspected impaired drivers off the road,” according to the Sheriff’s Department in a written statement. Funding for this checkpoint was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The checkpoint will be held where there are statistically more collisions and DUI arrests. The main purpose of DUI checkpoints is to not make arrests, but to educate driver on the dangers of impaired driving, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. The checkpoint is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. Friday and end at 2 a.m. Saturday. Additional deputies will patrol Diamond Bar streets for the remainder of August and through Labor Day weekend.
“The dangers of drinking and driving are very real,” Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Robert Hill said. “That includes drugs that affect your ability to drive. The operation was held on Diamond Bar Boulevard and Highland Valley Road from 6 p.m. Friday, August 9 to 2 a.m. Saturday, August 10. In addition to the driver arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs, one other driver was arrested on suspicion of felony identity theft and misdemeanor possession of drugs, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Deputies will check each driver they stop for proper licensing, signs of alcohol and drug impairment, the latter of which now accounts for a growing number of DUI collisions, authorities said. The checkpoint location is chosen based on collision statistics and the frequency of DUI arrests.
